The Saints put an offer to Tim last week. He just wants an opportunity to play. One thing he has in his favour is that he is a pretty accurate kick. A Traralgon boy - and top bloke.

So let me get this right, if Sydney delist Membrey - and he nominates MFC - we could take him?

Is this right? I am not sure about the rules.

I understand he nominated St Kilda during the recent trade week, but that means nothing now.

Also reported on big footy that Sydney offered St Kilda the option of taking Membrey a late pick, so they could grab Frost in the PSD.

If Sydney delist Membrey he can go to the club of his choice - St Kilda.

If they do not delist Membrey, he can leave through the PSD as an out of contract player - to St Kilda.

He is going to St Kilda.

Roosy needs to get in his ear then.

Membrey is a Gippsland lad, Casey is basically the home club for Gippsland kids.

Membrey is gettable and it would stick it up the Saints.

This is what I don't understand about Pre-Season Draft with Free Agency now.

Tim Membrey can be delisted and become a DFA and pick any club he wants to go to.

Lets say Sydney offer a contract to Tim Membrey, Tim then declines the contract and they have no option other than to delist him therefore he becomes a DFA... so what is the point to the Pre-Season draft then?

If they want him to re-sign they will not delist him. If they think that he will re-sign once he sees which clubs have picks in the PSD, they will not delist him.

I agree that it is borderline redundant now, as players can also go into the National Draft. But it is one way to more easily get to the bottom couple of clubs if one were so inclined.

I doubt it, if we were interested we would have already made a move.

once upon a time you could place a price on your head in the PSD but whoever was prepared to pay it picked you up ( ist in best dressed)

- so no one nominated. Has this changed ?

Membrey is St Kilda bound each way you spin it. Saints shafted us by forcing our hand in the Frost deal. I hope someone else slips through to the PSD pick 2 that make the saints regret taking Membrey.

Not sure the Saints shafted us. I think we were given a heads up about what they were going to do.

They need Frost more than us and far more than a 188cm forward.

They were ready to either give a late pick to Swans or get him delisted meaning they would retain first pick in the PSD. Then they would have nabbed Frost in the PSD.

Now they are committed to Membrey and we have the first live pick in the PSD. Hopefully that becomes useful. It may not but at least it is there for us.

We effectively got Billy and Frost for 23 as we got pick 40 back and 53 as a bonus.

The club may have already the decided the likely player we wanted to take with 23 will probably be there at 40 anyway.

Frost can now start training with the boys and Mahoney said that is invaluable to a young player.

As others said last year we lost Hannath in the PSD. We have our man.

No love lost between Swans & Roos, is there?

So now St Kilda want Membrey to train with them early.

Bad luck I say, can't have your cake and eat it - should've picked him up with a late pick.

The AFL should knock this on the head.

Why, it has been done in the past.

If they guarantee to draft him in PSD 1 he can train with them.

That makes our pick the first live pick, a great result in days gone by, but not as valuable under the new rules. However still can be useful.

I thought, like you, that "permission to train" with a view to drafting in the PSD was routine ?

The only issue I can see is that Membrey is a Swan until October 31 when his contract expires. Unless delisted, contracted players should not be allowed to train with another team.

But as the AFL makes this up as they go - who knows what is possible.

So he was delisted today and Saints will pick him up tomorrow as a delisted free agent so they would have got "our" Frost in the PSD if we hadn't have used pick 23 on him. What do people think about it now that we know that. I'd say they made a bloody good call or we would have missed him.

I'd say the rules are super dodgy. And that we should've made a trade earlier in the period - pick 23 for 35 and 45 (just spitballing but I feel a club would've done something like this) and ontraded the latter pick so we had our 3rd pick in the draft a little higher.

But yes better we cottoned on late than never.

I also feel aggrieved that we had so many high spots in the PSD over the years but being unable to leverage quality players from other clubs.

I agree, but at the same time, who's to say that Frost wouldnt have also been delisted, and walked to us for free as a DFA?

But do you take that risk especially when his team don't want to lose him unlike Membrey who was surplus to requirements at the Swans. Plus the Hannath factor. Once bitten twice shy.

Agh!

Of all the things that have happened, *this* is the thing that makes you angry?

It's ancient history. Let it go.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
