Would have preferred Bartram.

Imagine Bartram with the ability for sound decision-making and a good kick.

Is that what we have with Salem..?

I can dream.

You're right, T. It doesn't. But Watts is playing on a wing, with occasional rotations across half back and half forward. Garland is solely a defender and Pederson is a KPF/B and 2nd ruck. They're very different, IMO.

Pedo was playing a running midfield role along with second ruck against Sydney, and did a fantastic job. Garland to defence, Pedo to the wing, Watts to Casey. Job done.

You mean like JKH's first career goal vs West Coast?

Clearly the players had a stern talking to by the coaching group after that disgusting oversight. Remnants of the shithouse culture we've had for years.

'Disgusting' oversight?

'Disgusting' and 'apologist' would be the two most overused, and poorly applied, words on this forum.

I was pretty appalled by it. A kid kicks his first goal in AFL football and is treated like he has the plague.

Disgusted though?

A few people went to him - he had the misfortune of kicking his first goal in a ridiculous manner while spurning an imposing leader who was a much better option.

More blokes should have got to him but let me just say that the first thing Tyson said to Salem was 'there were better options than an off-balance snap.' Salem admitted as much after the game when he said he should have given the handball.

But it went in.

What if JKH missed that goal? I wonder what the Game Day thread would have contained in the seconds after that miss and Dawes' reaction to the miss?

Some of Demonland's finest work I would wager.

Except the Dawes snub wasn't his first goal mate. It was a goal on the run against West coast in Round 2 when he came on as the sub. From memory about 3 teammates congratulated him.

It wasn't a good look. In fact it was a very bad one, and not a defensible one.

I saw enough in that quarter to suggest that he holds a large amount of promise.

Strong one grab hands, a couple of very good flat kicks culminating from right decisions, a willingness to take responsibilty, some ball attracting ability and a strong body that is hard to knock.

Was not overawed in the slightest and looked like he belonged.

Yes you can see all that in a quarter. Vigilantly excited.

My mistake, I don't recall much from that game. For obvious reasons.

Mind you, maybe the lack of enthusiasm for JKH's first AFL H&A goal, was due to him kicking bags of heavily celebrated goals in NAB Challenge matches..?

A lot of players got to him after his goals against Richmond.

Fair to say they may have forgotten he hadn't kicked a regular season goal, and considering the state of the match at that time, enthusiasm for a conciliatory goal wasn't high at the time.

Sorry to present a balanced and differing point of view.

I know how much angst that can cause on here.

I am all for players like KH and Salem playing on their insticts if they get a sniff of goals. As long as they contribute regular 1% ers and score more goals than they miss then thats fine with me. That KH/Dawes example is a time when instinct delivered under extreme pressure. If he dished out to Dawes, the pressure would have moved quickly back on Dawes and he was no certainty to score or even get a kick away. Given our inability to score a decent amount of goals, guys that can make something out of nothing are a blessing. No one expects Cyril Rioli to dish out the ball wnen he sniffs a goal.

Fair point. And you almost made it without being a condescending [censored] this time. Keep at it.

Made the same mistake 'rpfc', and for the same reasons.

I think that is a pretty good explanation 'Machsy', works for me.

Glad you were able to understand it.

It wasn't complex. Much like your good self.

Give the [censored] act a rest, fella. Ben Hur did it first, and he at least made it entertaining.

my only concern is that gysberts had 30odd in his debut and where is he now?

one performance does not a champion make.

i loved what i saw and am quietly confident we have a real player who could turn inti anything but i'm not going to nominate him fo AA for a couple more weeks yet

Use the glass half full approach instead and compare him with the many others in their first games who look lost and never found their way. (I was going to name some players as examples - there are plenty to choose from - but no need to rub it in).

We have been burned way too many times.

Lots of false dawns.

One of the best things about Salems goal was the fact every single player in the team got around him after he kicked it. It used to make me sick that when we were losing by 100 points our new boys would kick a goal and noone would even high 5 him. It's a great sign of the change in culture at the club. Players are playing for one and other again.

After he kicked it, it was in fact Dunn who signalled to those in the back half to make the effort to get down there to congratulate him.

In years gone by, Dunn's 'leadership' has been anything but, but in full credit to him he's turned himself around and he's transformed into a player I have a lot more time for and lot more respect for.

As has been said, I wonder if that was more a byproduct of him getting a lot of attention in the NAB game v Richmond, coupled maybe with the fact that we were completely devoid of spirit at that point in the West Coast game.

Supposedly was one who tried to round up players to ignore any suggestions of tanking.....

just sayin

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
