Players to target at the end of the year

Blease isn't worth anything of value. If anybody really wanted him they could pick him up in the rookie draft after we delisted him.

Uncle can you do the light bulb trick for us?

Really?

Id rather Treloar and SHiel

Two gun midfielders easily outweighs one gun mercurial forward

Nathan Jones

Jack Viney

Dom Tyson

Bernie Vince

Jay Kennedy-Harris

Adam Treloar

Dylan Shiel

Daniel Cross

Jack Trengove

Christian Salem

Jimmy Toumpas

Dean Kent

Has the makings of a great midfield not just immediately in 2015 but would set us up for the next decade

And we would still have Hogan, Watts and Dawes up forward with Gawn coming through too

If Tom Mitchell continues to get overlooked in Sydney, I'd be throwing the sink at him.

Absolute gun!

I've seen a few posts about him after his 64 disposal game.

No disrespect to the guy, it's an absolutely outstanding effort; but has he done much else to warrant himself for us to want him apart from that game?

Has Tom Mitchell done much? You not watch last year?

I'd have Mitchell at least on par with Shiel and Treloar.

I honestly haven't heard much of him, that's why I asked.

If you rate him on par with Sheil/Treloar, then let's go after him! Those two will be absolute guns.

Disagree - league-wide there are so few of these players and they are all so important to their respective sides. It has also to do with how a side structures up. We have been missing this since Neitz left (bar a brief affair with Clark) and IMO it has really hurt us structurally.

It's a simple numbers game: You have 1 or 2 genuine monster key forwards but you have at least 10 blokes rotating through the midfield - as a result the pool of genuine quality midfielders across the league is at least 50, but in the KPF department it is about 10: Cloke, Hawkins, Walker, the Riewoldts, Franklin, Tippet, Pavlich, Kennedy.. they get very scarce after that.

I would go as far as to say it is the most important position on the ground apart from the bloke that wins the most clearances - but your team has a number of chances/options for players to develop and compete and rotate that role, a KPF is much more specialised and unique.

It is the same reason why these blokes tend to get higher priority on draft day.

There's also a marketing POV, people just love a spearhead to go and watch kick bags.

PS I seriously lack confidence that "Hogan, Watts and Dawes up forward with Gawn coming through" is a solid and reliable enough hand to be holding if we are hoping to be having a flag tilt in a few years. Take Hogan out and it is particularly shakey.

20 year old who kicked 60 plus goals last year and was all Australian in the 17th ranked team

that's a rare talent and as such should be rated far higher than sheil and Treloar

Not sure why Schroder isn't getting a game ahead of Sheringham!! Worst footballer I've seen. I follow the cats closely and it puzzles me.

Not closely enough.

Schroder would be playing, but for a calf strain.

Most likely in Sheringham's place.

the key is to find the players who want to leave their club to come to Melbourne city, or Mfc.

The key is to find players who want out of their club. If Sydney don't play Mitchell, he might want out.

Would be worth asking the question, he is one of the best youngsters in the competition.

Asking the question won't do it.

Few players worth targetting would be openly and actively searching for a way out to get more playing time.

JPK and Mumford weren't like this.

Sydney came to them and sold them on how much the swans wanted them to come.

Tom Mitchell is a good player, forget the 64 touches or whatever, he's a solid young player, I would absolutely love him at the Dees

absolutely, its always worth asking. I remember someone posting for us to chase him last year. highly regarded back then by some keeping tabs.

and good footy bloodlines as well.

Tom Mitchell is Swans through and through, just like Viney is Melbourne through and through.

Just like Ablett was Geelong through and through? money and opportunity talk.

It might be a little far fetched, but my feeling on Mitchell is that given he's a father/son, he is more committed to staying at the club than some others might be. Therefore, Sydney think they can keep him out of the side longer than some others. They'll play him if someone is really struggling in the 1's, but they won't tinker with the line up otherwise. Then again, Carlton and Collingwood could sniff around.

We should focus on players who want to change clubs, rather than trying to undermine. If he wants out, thats a different story.

I think we should target the players we actually really want and go after them hard. If it's undermining another club, then so be it.

Very far fetched. I just think they are doing the classic swans development and working on his speed and ball use so he develops right.

If you look at their small forward and midfield mix the reality is right now Mitchell isn't a better player than Kennedy, Jack, McVeigh, Parker, Goodes (presuming he hits form), Hannebery or Lewis Jetta.

The 4 he will push for a game are McGlynn (who's got extra versatility as a tagger, defensive forward or crumbing forward), Bird (who's in good form and has he covered for experience) and then the two young guys in Cunningham and Lloyd. Cunningham provides that extra bit pace as some of their mids are one pace and Lloyd is almost certain to be their sub and has been playing well.

If it gets to the end of the year and he hasn't played he may be angry and willing to listen to an offer. But I'm thinking he'll get in the side soon and then wont have any interest in leaving. It's hard to find a good player who can't get a game due to depth. Sydney did it with Josh Kennedy but it's a tough thing to find.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
