50 years since our last flag.

Is there going to be some kind of celebratory event this year?

Amazing that it has been so long since this famous day.

Here was the squad for that day:

B: Crompton Massey T. Johnson

HB: Anderson Roet Davis

C: Dixon Williams Adams

HF: Keneally Jacobs Vagg

F: Lord Bourke Townsend

Foll: Wise Barassi Mann

Reserve: McLean Emselle

Coach: Norm Smith

Melbourne 8.16.64

Collingwood 8.12.60

I hope there is an evening this year to celebrate this momentous occasion.

It makes me feel sad when I read all of those names

I'm going to be honest. I know about three or four of those names.

I remember them well and think it's a good idea. Wondering how many of them are still with us?

A celebration would be nice but it may end up just being a cold reminder or just how long it has been since we tasted the ultimate success

Started following the Dees in 1965 on the back of the 64 premiership. Not my best decision - now on medication for hypertension and stress!

Celebrate exactly what? 50 miserable years?

Don't remind me... I'm turning 50 in August .... A long time...

Why a club that was successful is still without a flag 50 yrs on???

That 1964 premiership was the pinnacle of our success and the end of a majestic era between 1954 and 1964 in which we won 6 flags and featured in eight grand finals. Ron Barassi and Frank "Bluey" Adams played in every one of those six premiership teams, Brian Dixon in five of them.

It was a great feeling to wake up every Saturday morning and know you were going to win that day. Losing never came into the equation.

About, now in fact well over, time for a repeat guys.

PYFO and get another for us all.

I remember the day....OMG, Froggy daring to follow his opponent past the centre....TGNWS was ropeable and would have dragged him were there an interchange then. Thank goodness for his defiance / impulsiveness

Sitting between wing and the hff city end. Was delirious after Froggy kicked that goal.

Doubt I'll be around for the next one.

I listened to the game on the radio as I couldn't obtain tickets. I was cursing and wishing we had back the old system of queuing up before the game. I was on a ladder painting when Neil Crompton kicked the sealer. Nearly came a big cropper.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

  • POSTGAME: Sydney

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.
