Dunn plays his best footy in seasons that his contract is up for renewal. Don't expect him to be re-signed until at least midway through the season.

Dunn had his best year of football under Bailey.

As another poster said this is his 10th and his best has been fleeting and his performance over his career below mediocre.

He has had 3 coaches over his tenure and not delivered under any of them notwithstanding he has been tried continually in nearly every position. He has had nearly 120 games of AFL football, loads of chances and not made a position his own. It's even worse when you consider how bereft of talent we have been over the past seven years.

His career has been marked by timidity in the contest and faux acts of toughness (jumper punching) which have ever hopefully supporters sucked in that he's the real deal

As a first round pick he is another in a long line of poor picks. I hope he does start to contribute as a competent footballer going forward. And I won't be getting excited from playing pre season running in straight lines of half back.

Some people seem to equate "I'd prefer Lynden Dunn stayed but wouldn't lose any sleep if he went" to "I hate Lynden Dunn and can't wait for him to leave". Frustrating.

I have a feeling he meant what he typed.

Dunn is in our first 10 picked every week. He consistently beats his opponent, is an excellent kick and is always available for selection. Further he plays well irrespective of how the overal team is performing.

If we are to become a decent side then players like Dunn need to finish their careers as 150+ game clubmen.

He has been on the list for 10 years, olisik.

If he is 'in his prime' it is the near the end of it - that is how long he has taken to become a productive role player.

And it is a HBF - I am sorry to all the HBFs out there but it is the easiest position to play in the world ever.

I'm hoping Dunn has a really good year. I think he can be top 10 B+F and a reliable best 22 player. Even be a reliable best 22 in a team that isn't hopeless that would be nice. And yes we are short on defenders and versatile ones are pretty important.

I think that is the nub of our situation tm.

As Dees supporters we tend to have an inflated opinion of our player list.

We have been in the bottom 3 -4 sides for almost all of the last decade under Three main coaches.

That says to me our list is poor.

We have lots of players on the list who are not AFL standard but as supporters we want to believe that Joe Blogg is after five years on the list just in need of a good coach.

The reality is that Joe is not up to it.

with the exception of 5 -6 players the fact that a player has played regularly for the MFC proves only that he is one of the better ones of a poor lot.

When we get to being a competitive team I will be impressed by players that are regulars.

IMO The test of a player is how many would the top four sides want from the MFC.

The answer for me is probably about five.

Another five might make a bottom half of the ladder side

The rest would find themselves in the WAFL, SANFL or the VFL.

I know I'm repeating what I've written many times before. Dunn is a very good kick for goal, but not a good field kick. People mistake distance for quality. His long kicks travel too high and therefore take too long to land. That works perfectly fine when kicking for goal but not when trying to get the ball into the hands of a teammate. His kicks allow the opposition to get to the drop of the ball and spoil.

The best kicks are those who get distance while keeping the ball low. It travels more quickly and is therefore more effective. It's what Jack Watts can do (as could Jurrah, Nathan Buckley and the player I consider to be the best kick I've ever seen - Darren Jarman).

With respect to Dunn, until last year I didn't think he was worth holding onto. After his performances last year I can see some value in him being on the list but see no reason to lose sleep in the unlikely event another team picks him up as a free agent.

Some of his long switches from one side of the ground to the other have worked well this preseason and are tailor made to Roos' game-plan.

You can come down of your high horse, you look out of place up there.

I can tell you from the experience, however limited, that HBF is the easiest place to play on the ground in a football match of Aussie Rules.

If the word 'hopefully' will do for you then you are easily pleased Saty.

It's a nothing statement, of course Roos hopes every player will play their best football this season.

Don't think that Chip, McDonald and Judy are our only three [tallish] defenders, both Dunn and Georgiou will be important to Roos this year, particularly if we get any injuries to the first three. Also Dunn is capable of going forward and kicking a goal and we certainly need some reserve back-up options up there.
