Chip Frawley

Deemotivated

The key disadvantages of Frawley being an UFA rather than a RFA are 1) that the AFL may scrap the compensation for UFAs over the next year and 2) that he could go to a club chasing a flag on a below market salary which then reduces our compensation.

Yes, that seems to be the real issue.

There are a host of restricted agents who have left and gone to the club of their choice. Goddard, Troy Chaplin, Dale Thomas, Monfries and Crameri are just a recent few off the top of my head.

Restricted, or unrestricted makes no difference in my view. Clubs no longer hog tie a player who wants to go if they're restricted, or unrestricted. They may well try and change their mind, or play hardball, as Essendon did with Crameri and the Dogs, but in the end they didn't stop him.

I'm happy to disagree.

I don't disagree.

I was just arguing whatever leverage we had from him being a RFA is now gone.

You would have to be an idiot to take a pay cut at the age of 26 the next contract he signs is the one that sets him up for life RF or URF makes no difference to the MFC.

you're probably right in practice

maybe the afl need to ether scrap the differentiation or change the rules for ufa?

the thing i struggle with is the receiving club don't have to give up anything - draft picks or trade players (directly)

Didn't surprise me that Frawley is not even in our top 10 as far as 2013 or 2014 payments go. The guy is a turnover merchant and is basically a one-position player. I know he had a front-ended contract, but he wouldn't be in my top 10 at the club.

Roos probably rates him at this stage, as he nearly had a coronary when he thought Frawley did a knee on the weekend.

I reckon he will go. Another club will be able to pay him over the odds and guarantee finals in 2015. Depending on the Watts experiment in the midfield in 2014, a Frawley exit might mean that Watts and McDonald become the 2 pillars of an MFC defence IMO. Watts doesn't turn the ball over.

They would be laughing themselves to sleep.

We paid big money for a guy who cannot get on the park and at best will not until well into the 2014 season if at all.[/quoteMaybe, but who was to know how it would pan out. When Clark signed he was fully fit. Back then we were the winners, trumping Freo at the 11th hour. Wind back the clock and Mitch could be a premiership player at Freo.

dc lets not forget that free agency is a players union requirement.

It is all about the free movement of players.

If it was not for the AFL putting up some sort of fight we would have total free agency.

The only people that gain from free agency are the rich and powerful clubs and the players

I was just commenting AD on the fact that some one said the Lions would be sad at losing Clark.

Of course it was the right move for the MFC at the time.

The problem is it has turned into a disaster.

And who is happy now.

The thing is that all the players won't benefit though. Only the top players will. Eventually the competition will become so inequitable that poor clubs will fold.

The AFLPA, like all unions, will cut off their nose despite their face.

I honestly believe Frawley wants to stay but the lure of success and money may lure him out. Careers are short and you'd want to cash in if you can.

Having said that if Roos takes up the 3rd year and we can have a competitive year you just never know... If he goes Georgiou gets upgraded.

You will know he is off when he says " I want to be a demon for life" until then I cling to hope.

To be honest FT IMO there are too many clubs now.

The talent pool is stretched too far just look at the MFc list.

You either sign or you walk.

Gotta love football's truisms...which are anything but. That's in the same category as the President saying that "The coach has the full backing of the Board".

Yes and it amazing how often they turn out to be correct.

Two recent ones for me are Ablett and Goddard, both said it half way through their last seasons and it turned out the decision to leave had well and truely been made at that point.

We all know what the second language of the AFL is

We just chose to ignore it when it suits us.

You'd stay faithful to your employer who has not provided you the quality workplace and remuneration that other employers can?

I'm sure he wants to stay but I really don't begrudge him furthering his earning potential and his workplace environment.

no mate. If you want to stay somewhere, you will. That may mean your employer adds a sweetener of course.

But if you need serious convincing it may be better to go.

Actually, I don't mind players (and politicians) lying about their own personal decisions. It's their business. As long as it doesn't affect their day job, I couldn't care less if a player is contemplating better offers while denying doing so...or if a US President is cheating on his wife.

Very poor planning by the club.

Front-loaded his contract so now his pay is outside the top 25%. Top teams will be lining up for him. Can't see how the club will be able to match an offer from top-tier teams like Hawthorn, Swans, Pies, even Dockers who will all have big pay-packer players retiring and will have the room to afford him.

You mean Lions fans are laughing about not having to pay $500,000 for a guy that can't get on the park?

Why couldn't we match an offer? Who else are we paying? Sorry forgot about Mitch, the bloke some people are supposedly laughing at? At a guess he would be on closer to 800k, but how much of his was front loaded.

I tried hard to stay away from politicians but could not.

I does to me if they are championing family values etc.

Fair call Old Dee. It was me that suggested that. CHIP could leave and do his ACL, no I hope that doesn't happen whatever he chooses but footy can be a cruel game. Gumbleton being a great example.

Our first game is a week away. On the chance he is still genuinely undecided, well we know as a club what we have to do.

I am amazed we did not pick Gumbleton .

With our injury luck he should have been a certain selection

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
