I think the thing is, getting a rare tall talent is harder than 'fixing' the midfield.

Look at this year - astute trading netted us Tyson and Vince who were able to improve our midfield from the get go.

Whereas we had no one to replace Hogan and Clark, other than taking ostensibly out best defender and turning him into (I believe) our most effective forward.

Perhaps that's why Wright appeals - someone who is capable of playing key forward and going into the ruck is pretty rare. And he has a lovely kick on him.

That being said, our midfield is just so lacking in skill and speed...

Does anyone know if he has mongrel in him like Jesse Hogan does?

If he loves to get physical i hope we keep our pick and select him

There's a lot of hype around Petracca, but I still see a lot of Colin Sylvia in him.

Passable, but certainly not great skills.

A lot of long kicks to no target whatsoever, more kick and hope.

Handballs landing at teammates feet.

Not exactly a strong football IQ or a good decision maker.

Tends to make a quick decision (not always the best), run with it, take a few on, then get a hurried kick long down the line. Not necessarily a negative.

Wins a lot of the football around packs through strength and mobility, but not really smarts.

Positioning is off, but that will be worked on.

Reading the play I'm not sold on.

Misses the odd soda goal or kick. Excuseable, but it's also clear he doesn't have skillset of a Dustin Martin, or a Watts, Salem, Hodge - for mine a requisite to be be declared such a clear cut top 3 pick and future star.

Exceptionally strong overhead and in one-on-ones, or even one-on-twos.

Rides contact well, good at improvising. Excellent athleticism.

Can he run all day? Yet to see it.

Can he win easy touches and link up play? Not sure.

There's a lot to like, but many are blinded to his weaknesses by all the positives and want to believe he's the 2nd coming, in the hope we'll secure him.

What are peoples opinions on the disposal quality and decision making of Petracca vs Brayshaw?

Hypothetically speaking, if we were given first access to pick either, I'd say they would key attributes in determining which player to pick.

I've heard neither have elite disposal but from that limited footage someone posted, I didn't see the 'neat' disposal that people speak of with Brayshaw. Petracca on the other hand whilst not a Salem kick looked like he's got better decision making and awareness when it comes to disposing the ball by foot.

Early days of course but one thing we got right last year was nailing two picks that have AFL standard kicking and decision making ability in Salem and JKH. Needs to be a theme for this draft too.

We know how much our team lacks in skill execution and decision making.

Which is strange because I keep hearing Brayshaw is a good user of the ball.

Petracca reminds me of an Oli Wines kick. Definitely not a weapon, but effective enough when under no pressure.

I reckon he's a lot smarter than you give him credit for.

For me, his awareness and peripheral vision in close is elite and it's clear that's a result of his Bball background. I know people are sick of hearing that but if you watch how he moves in close and seems to wait for the right option to open up before giving it, you'll see what I mean. That's rare.

He takes players on and gives off to the best option.

At this level also, players who are exceptionally quick thinkers can sometimes dictate where they want a teammate to run etc. Petracca's awareness and decision making in close would be amplified at AFL level.

Unlike Sylvia, he is a smart, determined and self driven player who works extremely hard to get the best out of himself. He'll get a tank and he'll get the best out of himself. You only need to listen to the way he speaks.

All other attributes of his are at a high standard which is why he's rated so highly.

He can pretty much do it all with a couple of standout and elite attributes being great hands, explosiveness and power, goal kicking ability, awareness and time in close, contested ball winning.

His field kicking and technique is the only thing he'll need to work on and I hardly see it as a weakness anyway. He makes good decisions when in open space.

If you want some one with mongrel then McCartin is the man. I would take McCartin if he was available to us.

I want to select him and for him to be a superstar too, but you're seeing things that aren't there yet and may never be.

You said last year Luke Dunstan was so overated and we should steer clear from him.

I think you'll find I said he was overrated when others said he should be top 5 or even taken at pick 2, and that he played like the second coming of Brock McLean.

Lloyd on Footy Classified just said if GWS had pick 1 they'd choose Petracca, if Saints had it they'd choose McCartin... and if MFC had it, they'd select Wright.

Not heard that until now, and he didn't elaborate as to what he's basing that comment on.

Heard that. Likely just a rumour or speculation based from sources, there's no way all 3 clubs would leak answers, if they've even made up their minds.

But based on needs it's a fit. GWS have no need for McCartin and less need for Wright unless they only want to play him ruck and I wouldn't take a ruck number 1, a dynamic mid/fwd makes a better fit for them. St Kilda have Rhys Stanley as a second ruck or could use Hickey/Longer in combination and desperately need a key forward. And either a mid or Wright as a fwd/ruck makes sense for us.

Just on the footage above Wright looks very raw. Clean with his skills but raw in terms of how he uses his body, his intensity at the contest and physicality. I wouldn't expect much from him for 24 months as he learns how to compete against guys without just being bigger. But once he did to have a big guy with clean skills and good athleticism he could easily be a Kurt Tippett deep forward and relief ruck.
