The remarkable thing is that we exceeded 400 disposals for the second time in a row but had far less inside 50's (31 to 62).

If Paul Roos can work out how we can translate 444 touches into a lot more than 31 inside 50's, we might have something going for us. Part of the answer is to do away with a few of the less skilled players and therefore reduce the abysmal disposal and bad decision-making that results in bad turnovers and another part is to inject a few key talls - Frawley and Garland into the defence and Dawes and Clark into the forward line. The Roos style will get better and with the right personnel would give us a good chance against all but the top sides this season. We could be looking at up to 10 wins.

I reckon a lot of people don't give two flying [censored] and think anyone who still cares about what number draft pick etc. is a muppet

The question to ask is will Jack Watts make an above average tall wingman with nice speed, good run and clean skills. On tonights evidence the answer is over time he probably will. If he steps up his attack at the contest and tackling he'll be even better again.

Yes, I see no reason to believe otherwise... he finally has a quality coach (for the first time) and like Jones, he may well realise his potential if not this year, then next with constant improvement.

As is quite usual when trying to instill a new game plan, players completely over correct. Once they switch when right, not at all costs. Kick to the line when under pressure, rather than trying to hit up a kick thats not there we will be fine. Poor contested work in the first and poor skill errors mostly by players who wont be there round 1 were the only worries. Great we had no injuries, got a good amount of game time into Hogan and Watts and have already seen enough of Tyson, Michie and Cross to be confident they will pay their way. Overall a satisfying hit out.

Only saw the last half but was impressed with Spencer. Very pleased with his attitude when Toumpas (like last game with Dustin Martin).

I know it will be unpopular to even suggest it, but Nicholson played well on Bartell. If Bartel was not hit on the chest by M. Jones when Bartel was running inside 50, his game would have looked better. His disposal was not atrocious.

No reason for the Toumpas haters on what I saw. Importatnly showed real courage taking a mark after having been belted in the head earlier.

Dunn looked very comfortable.

REmarkably, even the kick-ins afer points were well organised

It was "all Cats in first quarter", "Demons somehow claw back in second", Cats showing their class in third, "Demons struggle to get within 13 points in fourth". We out possessed them throughout. Turnover Kings were M Jones and Toumpas. Did the umpires ever pay holding it against Cats? Blease was effective. Liked Michie. Hogan had presence. Watts was good on all but two occasions. Spencer is our number 1. Vince, Cross and Tyson made a big difference. Clisby should be in best 22. Barry not ready yet. Grimes & Trengove can do more. Tierlich was often very good.

The bloke I want to really persevere with is Fitzpatrick. Every now and then (not enough) he gives the impression he could blow a game open.

Do people still see Terlich and M Jones as best 22? All off-season I was the opinion of no, from what I saw tonight, it's now an even firmer NO. Clisby is clearly a better prospect than Terlich while the new midfield recruits suddenly make M Jones look superfluous and sub-par.

It's a harsh call given their backgrounds but if these two play 20+ games again we're in trouble.

My observations:

Vince, Tyson, Michie, Cross, Georgiou, Hogan all terrific.

Heart in mouth every time Grimes, Terlich, M Jones, McDonald, Mckenzie, Bail, Nicholson touch it. High possession game style won't take us far if these blokes are playing.

Trengove just seems to go in slow motion. 15m from Horlin-Smith on a couple of fast plays. Just staggering to think he was a pick 2.

Byrnes just a spud. Blease just doesn't do enough. JKH and Kent before these 2 any day!

Watts needs to be much stronger over the ball. Give away the taps in front of yourself and playing for a holding the man free kick.

Someone please make the Spencer project stop. Tries hard at ground level but his ruck work and contested marking are non-existent.

I'm not because the minute we agree we're happy with a performance in which the opposition got the ball into their forward 50 twice as many times as us, then we're lowering our standards. There were positives that need to be accentuated by the coach, there are some very good players still to come into our best 22 and we know we can improve ... but happy? No because we can do better.

Sylvia, every team needs a grunt player. For mine, Terlich fits that bill. I'd rather a fit Michael Evans than M Jones at this stage.

I don't think he's ever going to step up his attack at the contest and tackling though. He just hasn't got it. TJ never excelled in those areas either but his best footy (2002 and 2005) was as good as I've seen from any Demon. I have similar hopes for Watts, and tonight's game was a good start.
