I think there was an existing thread on this but I couldn't find it - mods please merge if possible:

Last year I gave up on the AFL Live app, even though I was able to display it on my TV, because the video was 4:3 cutting off too much of the live picture (replays were fine). They said this was due to the broadcasters, not them. (Also sometimes the caching/bandwidth was a disaster even though my broadband was more than adequate.)

I asked them if this was changed this year and the reply was Fox will be 16:9, Seven 4:3. So I might give them another go and pray the bandwidth/caching is better.

I watched the AFL Live app on my IPad last year with reasonably good success (better than nothing at all).

Might I ask how you have it setup to play through your TV, and what is the quality like, is it quite pixelated at that resolution?

I have an ipad and an appletv and use airplay. Resolution is fine. I don't know how to do it without an appletv.

Sue - from what I can gather reading BF the 16:9/4:3 issue was resolved last year so shouldn't be an issue.

I have an email today from Telstra which states:

The vision supplied by Fox Footy is in 16:9, but the Channel 7 vision is in 4:3. This is due to agreements between the AFL and Channel 7, which we can’t control.

How did you find the value of the product, guys? I too have an iPad and an AppleTV, so I'm considering exactly the same thing. Worth it, in your opinion?

Not if the bandwidth/caching problems I had last year continue.

I'm going to buy a week for $5.50 and see how it goes. I see that Fox does all but 9 or our matches and I guess some of the others will be free to air depending where you live, so if it works I'll probably sign up and watch the Fox ones in the app. Compared to signing up for Foxtel which is more expensive (and comes with crud I don't want) it looks good if it works.

I'm not interested in all the other bits of the app, just the live play, so I have no idea if they are worth having. I suspect they just reproduce stuff available elsewhere.

That is so utterly ridiculous if true. Some things I've picked up from others after reading threads on Whirlpool and BF;

- the app will block attempts to watch via AirPlay to protect Foxtel

- if you are able to get it to play (there are workarounds) the resolution is so poor as to be either 1) unwatchable or 2) so pixelated/blurry that you may as well not bother watching.

I may sign up for a week as well to test it out but I don't think I'll be able to give up HD footy on Foxtel unfortunately as much as I'd like to stop feeding Murdoch's pockets.

I watched a couple of games on my ipad with not many problems. Cost is reasonable as you can buy per game and I don't have fox. I have a connection that mirrors my ipad to the tv but it doesn't work with AFL live. They have somehow stopped this happening which I guess we can't do much about.

Cost about $80 for 12 mths. Watched on my iPad last year. Found it reasonable but not great. No issue with connection. For the price, it was ok. A lot cheaper than Foxtel or buying a beer in a sh itty pub each week to watch a game if i cant make it to the ground. Depends. Do you have to see HD on your big screen or are you prepared to watch it on an tablet device?

i watched numerous games last year on my Apple TV via air play and never had an issue. I think it's great. I have no desire to get foxtel but I like to be able to watch any game I want. I have a big data allowance on my wifi so it could benefit my viewing pleasure because of that

Until such time as the AFL move away from a business model which has TV Rights at the centre, all other forms of media content and broadcast are going to be compromised.

I live OS, and watch online through a subscription to AFLTV (not accessible in Oz, though perhaps there's a way round that with a proxy), but the service is - and I'm being generous - substandard and unreliable. Even then, it's just a simple broadcast over the net: clearly the AFL has yet to even begin to grasp the reality of online and interactive viewing - or perhaps they have, but won't budge for fear of upsetting their precious broadcasters.

If the AFL want to get rid of the illegal streams, they need to get their own house in order.

What was the quality like? I've read reviews saying it varied from unwatchable (couldn't tell teams apart) to no worse than channel 7's SD feed.

i do recall a few times where it was pretty fuzzy but it would be no more than 10 mins in maybe 5 per cent of games I've watched. We could also get stuck into our mates in Canberra and have them sort out this third world broadband network we current have

Anything that takes pennies away from the Murdoch Empire is a good thing. I kept Foxtel for far too many years just to watch our interstate games. Having satelite reception also meant I got crap picture. Ditched Foxtel and bought the AFL app for a years subscription recently and looking at past replays it looks OK. For the price its worth a try.

I'd put more faith in Whirlpool posters than BF. But I wonder how up to date some of that is. I had no problem last year displaying on my TV using airplay. I can't test it now because they have taken all the old videos off. So its $5.50 this week to find out.

Beware AdC - last year the replays were great but the live stuff ranged from OK for some people to terrible for many (and assuming you were prepared to put up with 4:3)

Not much chance with Abbott in Murdoch's pocket.

Too late, they have my money. I can handle 4/3 on an ipad. If no good, its back to radio.

That's how it has been from me - varying between those 2 poles on occasions.

Often I've found streaming won't work so well on an iPad, but is crystal clear with no lag on an iPhone - both running off the same wifi connection.

For what I paid for a year ~$80 I won't complain.

Usually pretty reliable when I need it to be.

Ive been waiting to test out the apple tv with ipad link for a while now, it seems many different people have different results when trying it. Ill post some feedback on here as soon as i find out.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
