2014 rising star

Here are the odds for next year's rising star. It looks to be a very strong field - $14 for Jesse Hogan is tempting. I can't believe Jonathan Patton is still eligible.

2014 AFL RISING STAR MARKET

$6 Jack Martin (GC)

$10 Brodie Grundy (Coll)

$12 Mitch Grigg (Adel), Jake Stringer (WB)

$14 Joe Daniher (Ess), Jed Anderson (Haw), Jesse Hogan (Melb), Nathan Hrovat (WB)

$21 Jack Billings (StK), Tom Boyd (GWS), Josh Kelly (GWS), James Aish (BL), Luke McDonald (NM)

$26 Troy Menzel (Carl), Jonathan Patton (GWS), Lachie Hunter (WB), Billy Longer (StK), Jesse Lonergan (GC)

$34 Marco Paparone (BL), Dayle Garlett (Haw), Jackson Thurlow (Geel), Kade Kolodjashnij (GC), Matthew Scharenberg (Coll), Shane Kersten (Geel)

$41 Nathan Wright (StK), Sam Colquhoun (PA), Harry Cunningham (Syd), Nick Graham (Carl), Marcus Bontempelli (WB), Christian Salem (Melb), Nathan Freeman (Coll), Dom Sheed (WC), Ben Lennon (Rich), Patrick Cripps (Carl), Luke Dunstan (StK), Matt Crouch (Adel), Jackson Paine (BL)

I doubt Martin will win it, I think he will start strongly and then fade out as the season progresses...he still has the body of a child.

It will go to a tall next year, IMO. One of Boyd, Stringer, Hogan, Grundy will win. I'd put my money on Grundy...the media loves him, and he'll be the #1 ruckman at Collingwood all season.

The Dees that are eligible for the 2014 Rising Star are Hogan (14), Barry (101), Salem (41), Kennedy-Harris (101), Hunt (101), Harmes (101) and King (101).

Hogan seems the only one that would be worth putting any money on.

For the record, if you do plan on putting money on him, do it through TAB, they're offering $17 compared to Sportsbet's $14.

He won't make it.

Another naysayer.

He's made it onto a list, when many were saying he wouldn't..

He will make it, and he will be a very valuable player for the Hawks given time.

He has all the support he needs being at a club at AFl level. The chances of him failing are now much much smaller.

What a ridiculous statement.

As for the rising star, I'd back Martin.

Don't matter that his body isn't developed. The guy is unlike anyone I've seen.

Martin and O'Meara not to mention Ablett, Bennell, Swallow etc etc etc. They will be a good team very soon.

The chances of him failing if he never made it onto an AFL list were 100% so to say they are now much smaller is indeed a ridiculous statement of the obvious.

They've gone about the whole thing so much more successfully than GWS, in my book. Which is odd, because you'd think that having piles and piles of high picks would work out.

Then again, where have I heard that before??

You can't underestimate the influence Ablett has had on that group. He would make any young midfield walk taller and play harder. He's accelerated the growth of those young mids in a huge way.

Throw Ablett into the midfield of GWS and he would have had a similar effect.

Really proves how important it is to have the players of his calibre teaching and mentoring young kids. Even Geelong now. Look at how well developed some of their younger midfielders are at around the 50 game mark in comparison to other 50 gamers.

GWS needed to make Pendleberry or Selwood the offer he couldn't refuse a couple of years back. I think they did have a shot at Pendles but maybe they needed to offer more. If Scully is work 1mill Pendles is worth 2 at least.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
