Jesse Hogan has yet to play a game and people on here will be disappointed if he isn't better than:

*Our club's games record holder.

*Our club's all time leading goal kicker.

*Our club's longest serving captain and most recent captain to lead us to a grand final.

*Our most recent (and only) Coleman medalist.

Neita was never Michael Voss, Nathan Buckley or James Hird (three of his contemporaries). However, let's show a longstanding servant of our club a bit of respect and be pragmatic about a kid who has yet to play a game. Let's also remember what happened from 2008 to 2013. Many of us were positively wetting out pants thinking that youngsters, who in some cases mightn't have even been shaving when they were bloody recruited, could come in and carry the load from day one. Look how that turned out.

I didn't say he was better than Neitz. What I said was: "the next David Neitz". This post is as much an appreciation as to exactly how good DN was, as to the potential of Jesse Hogan. I think it is important to point out that particularly in our recent past we had some outstanding teams and some superstars (and Neitz certainly was that). If those same young supporters can get excited about the potential of our current crop to turn into an elite team, then that would be fantastic. Anything we can do to build confidence in that we should.

It is not all gloom and doom, and being a demon supporter in the future will be as rewarding as it was in the past for us in the 1990s and early 2000s. Jesse Hogan has the potential to build in the younger generation the excitement we had in watching DN in his prime.

Big Neita was fantastic....Just below the Absolute Gun Forwards...but not by much.

How we have missed that target....

Amazing he managed any good games at all at that height.

He did bleed red and blue but we needed him to be more of a Ryan O'Keefe type player.

In the practise game against the Roos earlier this year I was really impressed with the way in which Hogan would use physicality to get hold of the ball and use it. Watching Michie's interview on the club website I think that he may have a similar personality and attitude to Hogan and Viney. Let's hope these players are truly competitive beasts.

I think that if Neita had stayed in the back line he would have been one of the all time greats; as it is he had to play up forward when Ox went down and for most of the time, had to carry the whole forward line.

If he was a bit more selfish he probably would have done better, but he is without doubt one of the nicest guys and least egotistical player we have ever had.

It beggars belief that after all the time he spent at the club some can only put [censored] on him.

Neitz was a good player but not a great player. He dropped too many marks (Mr Falcon) and probably went on for 2 years past his use by date.

Watching Neitz was great but what stood out was Jeff White dominating the ruck (pre ruck rule changes), our slick mid field, dominating the ball and of course the delivery to Neitz, not always great but he made it so. Oh it has been so long between drinks to see that sort of red and blue play. It is just amazing how inept our mid field has been since 2007 in comparison.

All we said was that he was not a superstar, just a very good player. That's just a fact. To say otherwise is just pointless, baised revisionism. He was our banner player, but some of the others running around at the same time being banner players for their club included Buckley, Riccuito, Black, Carey, Voss, Cousins, Goodes, Kirk, Brown, Hird, Judd etc these guys won premierships with their clubs because they were a bit better than what we had to offer.. after 2000 the best we were as a side was to finish 5th in 2006. Of course that it is not on Neita's shoulders, but to me it demonstrates why we never quite good enough in the Daniher era... Neitz, McDonald, White, Johnstone, Yze, Bruce, Robertson, Green, Whelan, Brown - solid group of players but a cut below the best sides of that era. BH said he would be disappointed if Hulk is 'only' as good as Neitz, I don't know how anyone can argue with that. We need Hogan, Viney, Toumpas, Jones, Frawley, Grimes, Watts, Howe, Tyson, Fitzy, McDonald, Trengove etc to be a bit better than the group that preceded them or we will be just also-rans again. At present they are noticeably inferior (younger, of course) to that group, a group that could at best make week 2 of the finals. Of course it is 'silly' to put such expectations on a kid but let's face it, he is in very rare company - in general, but especially for us - when you talk about having runs on the board before even officially being at the club. How many 17-18 year olds have won the reserves best and fairest off 2/3rds of a season, the answer is bugger all, if any.. and it's not like he is some dime-a-dozen midfielder who may well not cut at it the top level, he is a genuine beast key forward, in terms of sheer probability there is very little chance that he for some reason won't perform at AFL level. We have stuffed up a few recently but in this case surely the hype is warranted. Sure, if he equals Neitz and gets a BnF, 2xAll-Australian and a coleman, that will be great. But if we want to see a flag in our lifetimes we need him to be on the level of stars I listed earlier, and get half a dozen all-australian guernseys and up there in the voting for the Chas etc. Of course it is not all on him, we also need some of our other young guns to break through the glass ceiling that has been over our talent for some time. Like I said, as far as 'raw product' goes it really does not get any better than JH so we really need to be able to capitilise fully on this one... and yes, if we don't, I will find it disappointing.

Don't seem to remember them bagging Neitz at all. We are all hoping Hogan will be a better player and signs are that he should be, that will never take away that Neitz is a champion of the club.

I love the old Doctor Who series and Darvos was a scarey dude when I was 8 years old. Still like him as there no special effects and he not a whimp, he would kill everyone given half a chance.

Players who believe they can match it with the best probably will if they have the work ethic to go with it.

Yep, and it's why Lucas Cook is not on the list. He was talking in an interview about developing at Casey, he needed to be more Kent like.

Kent has to lift a gear next season he has to be more consistent and be in the game for longer periods; I think he's capable but he has to show it on the field.

But like you, I love his confidence, I'm sick of seeing our guys looking on with seeming awe at the successful clubs.
