Now the draft is over, we can probably better assess our needs when it comes to rookies. Whilst I'm no talent watcher so not going to give predictions on who we might pick up I would think of the 4 picks we have - 2 might go on tall defenders, 1 on another small forward and the other either on a raw mid or ruck project.

Agree developing a ruck and key defender (just 1 I don't see the need for 2) makes sense. With plenty of main list spots likely to open up in 12 months time there's opportunity for a rookie to get 24 months to show what he can do without too much rush.

Best available as well for most of it would still be kept in mind. With 3 smaller players and not a large amount of talls taken there is bound to be 1 or 2 bigger guys on the recruiters minds going in to the rookie draft.

I'd still keep Jetta in mind for the final pick. I know he's a bit of a list clogger and the worry is he just can't bring it to AFL level but he has agility and the natural physical instincts with tackling. If he's presented to preseason in good shape I'd like to see 1 more year of him just in case.

Wouldn't be surprised if Roos takes a punt of one of his big american ruck proteges he had at Sydney.

Maginess and Tsitas might be my two favourite midfielders left. Both of them just find the ball very well and could over come doubts on physical attributes by sheer talent.

I agree Re: Fort and Sully. We need another key defender on the list who can develop at Casey for the next couple of seasons. Does anyone know what their disposal is like? All of the reviews I can find only mention they're good at one on one situations.

I know this article (http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2012-10-31/dees-elevate-nicholson-evans-) doesn't have any details of his contract length, but given the amount of wacky contractual deals that Neeld did (and that his co-elevatee is still contracted) I just guessed that he got two years.

If we still wanted him and if they don't, we could do a deal with the Dockers to delist him, on the basis we PSD or rookie him and take up his contract payment.

Then again if we don't want him or they do, it's all over.

Nicholson could be delisted and taken back as a rookie if we wanted to use our PSD pick, which I hope we do, if there is a better player available.

I'd love to see jake best rookie listed!! Looked better than half of our listed players in the vfl last year.. Would be a waste to see him go to another club, considering he knows all the boys now..

it would be a shame to waste our premier position in the PSD and miss a chance to get a jump on those other teams still willing to take psd's instead of rookies. Nicho onto the rookie list would still keep him at the club but also put him on notice that he needs to improve to stay.

Posted on another thread, Darcy Hourigan looks ok, big lad 192 and 92kgs, has a great boot good awareness good hands can play back or forward, what's not to like. Was expected to go in the ND but missed out. Needs to get a bit more aerobic capacity but that shouldn't be a problem if he gets a good pre season.

He's the same size as Darling and reminds me a bit of him. As a forward he probably doesn't have to be all that quick and he looks strong enough to hold his own in a contest.

Have a look at his highlights and he knows where the goals are and is a very strong mark, not too bad on the ground either.

I am sure nicholson knows what melbourne is doing and if they are keeping him on then the club obviously sees some potential in him, but given the lack of realisation of that potential in AFL games they may well move him back to a rookie. i would be surprised if they had not already discussed their plans for with him (whatever they are), as there is no benefit for the club to hold onto him so long if their intention was to delist him so late without taking him back as this would seriously penalise his chances of training with or being picked up by another team. Such treatment of a players would not go down well with the rest of the team.

As for picking a smoky in Hunt, they obviously see something in him to take him above 50 or more other would be draftees, that does not make him a poor choice or mean the players after him are poor, MFC just rates him higher than the others and melbourne preferred to take him in the draft rather than risk of loosing him. We have 4 rookie slots open which we are probably going to fill, as such getting as many early picks will allow us greater choice. if we dont participate in the PSD and other teams will get first crack of the players in the draft, therefore reducing the talent pool we have to eventually choose from.
