Saw this guy play in the U18 Grand Final and he really caught the eye - liked his confidence, skill and aggression in that game

Could be a 30-40 range pick and not a bad option to add to our list as a developing KPD....after we have plenty of midfielders lined up.

Knightmare's view:

Daniel McStay (VIC – KPP)
Height: 193cm, Weight: 86kg, DOB: 24/06/1995
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Style: Jarrad Waite
Player comparison:
Range: 20-60
Profile: McStay is a tall who still seems to be growing into his body having grown significantly in recent seasons. Still a project player and still not a particularly physical or aggressive player by key position standards and is still developing that strength and ability 1v1 but in saying all this he has some real talent. McStay stands out with his versatility and small man skill set at his height. McStay is an excellent athlete and has some real linebreaking ability for a tall and isn’t afraid to take on the game. He’s also got a real leap on him which allows him to fly for some strong contested marks. He’s also an excellent kick at his height and hits his targets around the field and can convert from his set shot opportunities up forward. It’s unclear which end he settles into but given his strong improvement in recent seasons there is potential for him to continue his strong development at either end.

Very odd comment, at 193cm he is almost at midfield height these days and he better be an excellent kick if he wants a long term future in the game.

I think he means he's a good kick relative to: the taller you get...the greater the ball drop to foot...the harder to control, so he is one of the better kicks for a 193cm. I would concur from the vision I saw - has all the makings of a damaging left footer packaed into a KPD.

I know what he means but 193cm is hardly tall these days and you would expect him to be a good kick. This should not be the exception.

Well let's relate it to another topic of discussion - Frawley

Mcstay is a substantially better kick than Frawley and they're the same height - do you expect Frawley to be a top notch kick? Cos he's not.

According to Jay Clark, Melbourne is among 4 clubs that's officially interested in Daniel McStay.

Free agent so would get him for free.

Stoked to hear we're interested.

He would be a great acquisition but why would he leave the Lions other than wanting to come home?

Brisbane are not far behind Melbourne in the chance to a premiership so the only way we get him is if we pay overs, which we all know is unlikely unless someone is squeezed out.

But with our forward line debacle I’d be willing to consider a few that I wouldn’t have previously.

Would be a huge get. But would be surprised if he left Brissie.

What about if Melbourne can either beat Brisbane in a GF at the MCG, or knock them out of the race before that?

I would be in his ear, or Mitch Lewis

Both would be great additions to the forward line

McStay would be a very good get, but do we have the $s in our cap to satisfy him? Doubtful imo.

If we want him and he wants to come to us, we'll make it work.

He is just a player, 2nd or 3rd key forward at best

He'd walk into our forwardline this year...

I heard the Brisbane CEO on radio a few weeks back and he mentioned that Dan’s girlfriend is from Brisbane, and he has a bunch of properties in Brisbane.

I’d be really surprised if he left.

Granted our forwards are struggling but McStay is not a match winner and offers nothing more than Brown or T Mac

It’s been a very long time since we have a big forward that’s a match winner - they are few and far between

Fritta on his day is v v good but not a Cameron, Franklin, Lynch type

its an area we are weak in and it needs to be addressed - Weid isn’t going to tick that box and I don’t (and never have) think BB is the answer

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
