Jack Watts signs new 3-year deal

I believe I posted a week ago about the 3 years on the other JW thread so no surprise there! A very good result for the club and can't wait to see the untapped potential from this bloke!

Okay, thank you.

You're right on the money.

What's next? Who's next?

Just between friends ;)

He doesn't have to every time to be effective. Yes it would bloody help but I don't think he's got it in him. His skills are sublime, Watts on one wing Toumpas on the other. There's no point wasting more time trying to make him something he's not. Put the hard nuts in the square- Jones, Viney etc. Crashing packs is one thing but all players must learn to make effective tackles.

Yes. Fair statement.Problem is that I don't think he can lay an effective tackle. If he can learn to do so well and good.

i think you'll find the latter will wait and test the market...thats my guess at least

now back to Jack

No, I get the feeling Col may have been waiting to see what Jack would do and will probably stick around as well. He has stated in the very recent past that he loves the club and wants to remain a Demon, so this may be the thing that tips the scales in our favour.

One of only two Demons to get BOG votes in the 2013 Brownlow Medal.

(a useless fact if there ever was one)

He got the 3 votes in our win against the Dogs this year and the 3 votes in our win against Essendon in 2012 - our only 2 wins against non- expansion teams - maybe not so useless.

This is good news. Congrats to PJ, Roos and Jack. An important piece of the puzzle to help us get out of this mire.

100% correct.

Viney showed intent in his first game. Having said that, Watts actually 'went' a couple of times this year. Roos might get into his head....

Yeah he did. He took that great mark in defence, I think it was against the dogs. The comparison to Goodes is a fair one based on Jacks potential. Goodes for mine has never been a big pack mark wherever he has played. But he has been a silky skilled player. Jumbo we would all love him to go harder at the contest but for me it's a little but like the Toumpas/Wines discussion many have had . Let's play him to his strengths, he could become a very damaging wingman. If he occasionally drops forward to take a grab and kicks a few than that's a bonus.

Fingers crossed Roos teaches Watts how to win contested footy a la Josh Kennedy. (The Swans one.)

he's fantastic shot on goal from 'the paint' he wouldn't have to be drifting far

I think everyone, Watts himself know he needs more bulk. he needs to get some REAL no-messing-with-me strength into his guns.

Do that, develop an appetite to crash...world's his oyster. I hope it is to.

if not he's wasting everything.

No new news other than signing Sylvia will be harder. He will be testing the waters in the free agency period

I think most of the team needs to improve. Too many times were tackles laid but players still able to dispose of the back. This may be due to the lack of interest players showed in general.

Oh dear, three more years of Ben telling us nothing hard ever came out of Brighton Grammar........

There will be sadness in the Hur family tonight.

I'm thrilled BTW!

Ben Hur will be stoked.

At least now we still have Jack to sh!tcan for all our dashed hopes and dreams.

By 'midfielder' I assume Roos means wingman. Someone that can own the members wing, drifting forward to kick goals when we're playing well and (probably much more often) drifting back to intercept opposition thrusts.

Can definitely see merit and whilst there came a point this year where I thought cutting Jack Watts would be no great loss for the club, I'm glad he has re-signed.

It's very good news and I hope we re-sign Sylvia too - if he was UFA at some other club everyone here would be falling over themselves to sign him to MFC - there'd be a 50 page thread

If Jack can get an appetite for smashing the contest and the confidence to take the game on.... drooling!!! He is the perfect specimen for the modern game!!

midfield role ... WTF !!!!

That's where u are in the middle of the paddock and get ball and kick into forward line!

Drafted as a winger, our midfield height pretty small bar Dunn, and a lack of efficient ball skills I can why he would be suited to be in the midfield.

Would also be a rotation for Howe forward and create a mid who can kick goals.

Got alot to prove though

Now...down to serious considerations Jack ..

.....get rid of the fluff mate !!!

Er, yay, whatever.

I would put him and Hogan into the middle rotations next year.

Not for science experiment; we don't have any midfielders.

not the silliest idea on these there forums rpfc !!

I sense Hogan has an appetite for eating the opposition whole. He'll make a nice playmate for Viney.. Watts can play wing-man !!

I'm really glad he's staying. I reckon he'll thrive under Roos. I can even see parallels between the two of them at a young age. Tall, athletic yet laconic, former basketballers. Roos could be just the man to help unleash Jack's potential.

I saw a young Paul Roos on a wing at the MCG when he was 18. I was in awe at how good he was. I've rarely seen a young opposition player I was so impressed by.

You may see similarities in their style, but that's where it ends. Roos was a star by Watts' age.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
