In the meantime, the circus outside the courtroom continues and Essendon's attack on the AFL foreshadowed in the court has predictably been picked up by one of its media proxies Chip Le Grand in the Australian. The focus is now on AFL "integrity" manager Brett Clothier -

"AFL integrity manager Brett Clothiers handling of confidential anti-doping information has emerged as a central issue in Essendon and coach James Hirds Federal Court case against the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority."

While I agree that Clothier may have to justify certain things he might have said or done it's a side issue and doesn't go to the heart of either this application by Essendon or the to the doping allegations facing the club.

Like last week's brainfart from Mark Robinson who attacked the very existence of the "Essendon mother" which backfired when Eddie McGuire replayed the interview and Jobe Watson admitted it reflected the feelings of many Bomber parents, this is yet another counterproductive effort from a camp that becomes more and more desperate. The whole thing is unraveling before Little's very eyes.

I actually found the Robbo article denouncing the Bomber Mother's call as a fake, mind boggling.

Obviously the woman didn't want to give her name, so as to not out her son. Robbo is suggesting that a lady rang up the radio, had what seemed to be a thorough understanding of what happened, was not a Bomber's mother, but was a brilliant enough actress to cry throughout the interview and make everyone listening believe she was who she said she was. Couple that with the fact that she had spoken to Eddie and his producers off air, who also believed she was who she said she was.

If she was a fake she was brilliant and clearly extremely well informed. Who would have informed her if she was not a player's mother? Why would she go to that trouble if she was a fake?

I can find only one fake in this latest little episode and that is Robbo. He is pretending to be a journalist when he is nothing but a mouthpiece. Shame on you Robbo, you have no credibility in my eyes.

The Armstrong camp was very strong on threatening legal action to stop any form of criticism or attempt to discover the truth about allegations of performance enhancing drug use, I believe.

You are not going to convince people who look at the situation from the perspective of the players involved and not the interests of the wider sporting community which needs laws put into place to help stamp out the drug cheats.

No, that actually was the point. If the laws were inadequate, the players would have been protected.

You have no idea. The AFL receive upwards of $100m a yr in stadium developments, grants etc from the federal government. If you think that they would turn that down and refuse to comply with WADA rules (like most major sports in the world) you are being foolish.

The AFL in reality had no choice.

That tell's me that the AFL over involved themselves, now wish to not look so involved. Lol

Have a good think about about how much of the $100m will be lost as people turn away from the game, turn back to grass roots or other sports over the next 10 years. I see no reason why there's can't be an additional layer of testing & governance that's actually respected. In the end it's not really about the money is it? It's about the AFL/NRL being threatened by the government. This is the real story, not some messed up AFL team.

The AFL had to get involved,they got the bombers for BTGID and thats about all they could do.There was no other charge they could lay against them.

ASADA, are not controlled by AFL or efc and AFL knew that and still know it today,their hands are tied until asada plays out its SC and IN game.Only then will the afl do what its done to other clubs recently,and thats help them get back on the right track.

I dont think there is any doubt that the action take by Hird and Little is the day in court Hird has always wanted. He has never accepted any wrong doing in relation to this and was always inclined to fight the AFL's response in the courts.

He is targeting the legality of the interim report and the 'joint investigation' for one reason only and that is to clear his name. If that results in the players getting off as well then thats a bonus.

IMO if Hird and the club are successful in this Federal Court case further procedings will be taken against the AFL to have the penalties for bringng the game into disreput ruled invalid. If that occurs the players and Essendon will sue the AFL for millions in losses and damages.

It would be travesty of justice if evidence held by ASADA was unable to used and the Club was left the only winner. Not sure that the courts will allow that to occur.

The BRW Rich List which came out (as part of the Australian Financial Review) last Friday had Little worth $750 million. I'm sure he's very attractive to some people.

Totally agree. Bring out all the evidence and charge them or it might not ever get used. So much time and opportunity wasted before it hit the courts..

ASADA should play their hand imo, that way even if the bombers get off on a technicality they won't shake the cheaters tag

    As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

    There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

    I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
