Today we had Tyson get caught holding the ball after taking a mark in the middle of the ground, Gawn handpass into the man on the mark, vandenBerg on the half forward line handpass to Jones who was under pressure instead of just kicking it himself and Kent take so long to get back behind the man on the mark on the half forward line that was forced to go sideways which was turned over and resulted in a Gold Coast goal.

Why can we not get the basics of making practical decision from a mark or free kick right?

How hard is it to get back quickly behind the mark and not kick under unnecessary pressure?

Or game plan? I assume the players are playing to instructions that are based on what they practice at training! Just a guess by me, it may be all quite different and maybe players make it up as they go.

There is a clear mandate to move the play as quick as possible, besides the Kent one upsides above all players were trying to play on it move the ball in to someone else quickly. Poor descisions simple as that, can poor judgement be trained out? 

A lot of times yes, again if you practice the "skill" of the game plan and spreading to the right space then it can. We are on the up but it is going to be a massive end to the season and preseason from the group who will be at the club next year and from a recruitment of players who use the ball really well.

Viney is a prime example of a player that needs to take just that little bit more time to think before releasing after a mark or free kick.

Slightly off topic, we are always trying to find someone on their own, no one wants the responsibility so they are always looking for someone in a better position.  There is no issue with trying to hit someone up in an uncontested situation, if you have the skills to do so, sometimes we do not.

The two kicks by Kent & Stretch were exasperating. I don't know if there is any level of football where those decisions would be the right decision ever. Then the skill execution after the decisions that were made were just as bad. Sometimes I wonder if the players either over think a simple scenario or are over coached at how to move the ball. I would have thought that the decision to move the ball in a certain direction would almost be instinctual at that level after years of training? It's the one area of our game that is still average & has stopped us winning multiple games this year. I'm hoping that some of it can be coached out of them, but I think the club is going to have to really focus on bringing in better decision makers & users of the ball over the next few years if we are going to be any chance at getting near competing for a flag.

Wow, this idea that we were 'the better team' just continues to baffle me. Adelaide and St. Kilda are better teams than us, it's just a fact. The Eagles we should have beaten on the day, but they too are a better team. Ladder positions at this time of the year speak the truth. Skills, vision and decision making are all things that constitute quality, and those three teams have more of all of them, hence they are better.

If there is one thing (one of many!) that I want the club to focus on over the summer with every player is their decision and DISPOSAL efficiency. Every  kick, handball, mark, tap, tackle, shepherd, bullock, bumps ...counts. Every single one. You turn the ball over, you get told about it (by your teammates, your coaches and your fans!) Enough of the crap skills, time to teach the younger players to be elite for the next 5-10 years.

It's part of the reason we turn the ball over too often and fail to take advantage of transitions across the ground. I was talking with my brother on Sunday and saying the reason you transition is to open the game up, create space and move the ball forward quickly into space so teammates can run onto the ball and move it down the ground. If you kick backwards/sideways then wait too long and just chip it around then transitioning is pointless and you may as well just bomb it down the line.

Dunstall was right in the criticism but I can remember him often being quite unwilling to waddle. out of the goal square, or only to make a lead.

I always see our blokes trying to create play, no problems there, only to be thwarted by delivery just short of the mark this year,

Really? I remember Dunstall making a tackle in defence in a game when he had some 14 odd goals (16 by memory)

Again, we still don't get back behind the mark quick enough when in situations where we don't or can't play on from a mark.

It is such a simple thing that can easily be fixed with a bit of coaching.

This is off topic, but I find this week and last week sum up your posting, Clint.  When we were up and about last week you had literally nothing to add.  You tried to be negative but got shot down, then you basically disappeared.  This week you're all over the place as we didn't play as well and you thrive on the opportunity to be negative.  It's no co-incidence and it's such a shame that you see the bad before the good.  It's a horrible way to support a club, but I guess that's not up to me.

I don't agree with you, Wise - CB is usually positive but like all of us, has his bugbears - one of them are the basic things that excellent teams don't do but we just can't get out of our habits.

Saw those bad habits on display yesterday - and yes, we are few months younger than the average AFL team - pointing out those habits helps explain performance like yesterday, and the difference between seasoned teams that will beat us this year and us.

Speaking of mark basics, my bugbear... not extending your arms to mark. Happens way too often when leading. Extending your arms gives you extra length defenders cant get around and if they do there is a high chance they will chop the arms.
