Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Young talent: do NOT trade pick #2

Recommended Posts

Mark Neeld wanted Watts traded for North Melbournes second round draft pick which then would have went to the saints for Farren Ray. All the Melbourne Recruiters and list managers were gobsmacked at Neelds request and every single one of them went against him believing Watts is worth a first round top 10 draft pick.

True fact..

So your point is Neeld was the only one not wearing rose coloured glasses?

We have a real chance to get an elite talent that will become a superstar just like Cale Morton, Jack Watts, Colin Sylvia, Tom Scully, Jack Trengove and Brock McLean

Surprisingly, all of whom have been "rising stars" and BOG for Melbourne and/or their new Clubs!

Will present interesting scenario for the recruiters, we aren't really in need of Boyd while plenty of other clubs are so we may have a few options

  • trade away one of the top picks for a ready to go mid and a later pick, while we use our other top pick on another future mid
  • take the best two young available players with early picks
  • trade both picks with clubs who finish higher up the ladder for a ready to go mid & their first round pick, giving us two players for 2014 & beyond & two young first rounders for 2015 & beyond

who knows always a fine line in knowing what to do but would be pretty sure Freo, Lions, Port, Dogs, Blues & Hawks (if Buddy goes) would like to get their hands on Boyd!

It's weird. For the amount of times I've said we should take midfielders, midfielders and more midfielders, I now believe we should take the best available. If Boyd is the best available, we'd be crazy not to take him. The next best sounds like they'll be a mid. I'd look at trading a PP (if we do get one) for an established A grader. I'd then go hard at an experienced, solid B-grader free agent. Throw cash at the FA. We don't want to give someone like Freo, the Blues or the Hawks a player like Boyd (if he is indeed believed to be the best bet) if that will help complete their premiership puzzle. Our midfield needs a shot in the arm, but our list needs further class across it too. If Boyd represents that then I'd be going with him at one.

Naturally, this is based on the assumption that we get pick 1. It seems like Boyd may not be there at two and perhaps it says something about him if he is.

I'd accept a downgrade of pick 2, but not outside the top ten.

For example, downgrading pick 2 to pick Lucky 7, along with our third round, for a dependable midfielder.

I don't get so excited about top-2 picks anymore, for some reason. ;)

What WOULD excite me of course, would be if we were actually working with pick five or six.

Last year was Viney.

Yeah I know, that's why I said even last year was better than Prendergast. I liked Vineys approach with the more mature blokes in the draft, has worked well with Terlich and Jones.

Meth Coast in the last 20 years have never deviated from their method of taking the best player available, despite team needs. They have a philosophy of picking up KPP'S with later picks, rookie etc unless they happen to be the best available then they will take them should the option arise in the draft

I think we need to take best available, we made the mistake before of picking on type of player. If Boyd is it then we should take him.

Likely we will have pick #2 in 2013 draft.

Whilst our player development is poor, I think we again need one of the best young mids coming through.

If you get a chance, get to watch some of Dominic Sheed (WA under 18s) against Tassie. He gets it in contests, runs, creates, takes players on, thumping left footer, and well built. Some has compared to Simon Black, but I think he is more like those type Swans mids.

A must GET. A leader. Ready to go round 1 2014.

footnote: pick #20 ish - Nathan Freeman (Sandringham), will be around this draft pick and is ready to go, tough, a leader and local kid.

l reckon we'll get pick one

Would anyone here trade Toumpas, for example to Port Adelaide (if they wanted him) for their first round pick?

Why not, we have probably retarded his development enough to safely say he won't play 100 AFL games (sarcasm).

We just signed him to a 3 year deal before game 1.

I know where you're going with this.

Ala Cale Morton. Sell before his price drops. IMO still early and will give him another 12 months but I get where you're coming from.

Tough call that, his skills are sublime, he is the most elite kick of any first year player this year - by a space.

But he is a bit soft, but that is nearly understandable.

I wasn't a Toumpas fan, but I'd be leaning on keeping him, his skills are very good and he should be a player down the track.

Plus, he has media appeal, being Greek, he is an extremely likable kid and we need players that can get supporters on board.

Not sure any of the 2013 draft have the appeal of the Toump.

If we get Pick #1 (likely as a PP) and Boyd is a clear standout, we should look to trade down the draft. The one thing we don't need is another KPF and I would rather have (say) the second, sixth and eighth best mids in the draft rather than just the best two. I would even consider trading down Pick #2/3 for two picks later in the first round.

if Clarks foot injury is as bad and sinister as some believe, we will take Boyd.

yeah and Viney is going to be as good as his Dad, at first l thought Toumpas was too light but he will come on and be a very good player in 3-4 years. Terlich is a good pick up and l think Kent might have something. Matt Jones is going to be good value as well.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
