Jack Watts Thread

Recommended Posts

Anyone that defends him after these 3 games has no idea about football. The type of people that just count possies and go "bravo".

Or they've invested in too many Wattsy badges and named their cat after him.

If he was pick 30 odd he'd be out the door with Jamie Bennell and any other soft pea heart that lasts 5 minutes.

It's embarrassing watching him, it's even more cringeworthy watching people defend him.

I truly want culture change. I truly don't understand how the players and coaching staff aren't beating Watts with telephone books. How do they look him in the eye?

You want culture change?

Kick a clearly disinterested James Frawley out of the LG.

FFS DA, of course Watts has been poor, with another 20 blokes. He has an uphill road to salvage something from his footy career but do we need to continually [censored] the horse? And do we need to [censored] the horse after a game like today where we won but only played well for 3 quarters?

I don't think Watts will be what we want him to be.

I don't think Neeld will be around in 2014.

I don't think McLardy will last many more months as President.

But I do not think that we need to constantly drum those things ad nauseum.

We won. Let them have that. And we move on to the next chance to salvage something.

I hate people repetitively arguing the same thing over and over again, so I am hypocritical in this instance, I must've made about 5 posts about Watts' [censored] poor efforts in the last 3 weeks.

But I just can't get over it.

And the 20 other rubbish players argument doesn't wash with me.

Name 1 other player (bar Lynden Dunn) that constantly avoids contests, takes short steps so they don't have to jump into an aerial contest. Poor form doesn't bother me at all for a few games, it happens, good players get through it.

My beef is with a whole young career getting away with pure soft efforts and zero intensity. Punish this or correct it. Do not [censored] tolerate it then complain that he cops a hard time. WE are copping a hard time, we want to see everyone at least making an attempt to go when it's their turn, or chase, not take 2 steps and dive with one arm out stretched.

Adem Yze got away with it while at least having an influence on the game. Even he flew into a pack when he needed to.

I just want to see Watts go back to Casey like Pederson, and not come back until he's shown he's prepared to do what needs to be done on a football field.

It makes me sick that some people do not care as much as I do.

I mean FFS, the hardest team to play against... culture change... Let's get real and do it properly, no exceptions.

i cannot figure out what could possibly be being said between Jack and his coaches

it is so obvious he is lazy and soft, surely his coaches have called him out on this a number of times and told him to address it. Clearly JW is aware of how the footy world perceives him. He has even had a week off to think about it. Why in the name of God does he come out and do it again and again, and then what does the next conversation sound like.. you would think he would be going out of his way to get poleaxed just to show he is not a softwilly.. it's just bizarre

He really wasnt that bad today.

I'll assess.

First Half: was not good, he was quite soft and looked very timid and nervous.

Second Half: as the game went on, he fought his way through the game and started to dispose of the ball quite well..

Jack Needs the time at AFL level and needs to hit some serious confidence. Jack used the ball fairly decently but was a tad weak and i am having faith that with the teams small bit of confidence, Jack can find some confidence.

19 touches today, 9 contested, 84% efficiency... Some perspective please.

Not saying he was great, but wasn't as bad as people are TRYING to make out.

Hey Stuie were you there actually watching Jack if you were then you obviously are seriously deluded or have bad eyesight Jack watts was very poor even in the last quarter when we finished so strongly Jack did very little

Pretty sure he's had time by now. He's not a skinny kid anymore.

Jacks had his time.. No more excuses.

He stuffed us around today when the ball was in the backhalf & very nearly killed off the club today..

If we had lost because of the merry go round football he was dishing up, this Club would be In Melt Down... its not good enough.

He's got to go back to Casey for a month, & see if he can find some vigor. & if its not in him, que sera sera...

Got nothing to do with confidence. It's got everything to do with intensity and not being afraid to get hurt.

Jack shirks too many contests to just put it down to 'confidence'. He's the least courageous player in the team.

Jack will never be good at Mfc, it's time to move on. Neeld and co have treated him like shite and it's time to move on. It's obvious he has talent but they have screwed any confidence he had. Develelpment at Melbourne has never been good.

What's Neeld done. He played forward last year, struggled. Moved to the backline. Improved. Started with a good preseason this year. Then played horrible football the first 2 weeks. Instead of dropping him they gave him a week off and must have given him belief. What does he do? Betrays them with horribly soft football. Luckily we win so he gets another chance next week you'd think. It's time for Watts to earn his own confidence.

Stuie, I think sometimes Tv doesn't allow you to look at all efforts across the ground. Whatever the case, i was there today and it was actually quite sad. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think he will be even a serviceable player for us. He plays like he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders. And he probably has.

I wonder whether he could play off a wing.

Time Jack Watts stood up himself. Confidence is a poor excuse.

Jack has played nearly 60 games for Melbourne. He should be sat down and told to watch the first 60 games from a player like Joel Selwood to learn what courage, intensity, lack of fear and working for your team mates is all about.

Since Cale Morton.

...And a prayer as well.

And the spelling is not that good either.

Whats obvious about his talent? Name one game where he has made an impact. 5 years and 58 games....FMD

Oh thats right he was a No 1 draft pick.

Arguably the worst number 1 pick since Clive Waterhouse in the mid 1990s

Consider an example from today that pretty much summed up Jack's defensive game.

The ball came in at a GWS forward. Jack elected to stay out of the contest and left it to SHANNON BYRNES to try to spoil. Somehow, Byrnes actually managed this. Jack then left it up to Byrnes to fight for the ball on the ground while he stood and watched. When the ball came out in GWS's favour, Jack then elected to not mark either of the two free men and instead watched as one of them was given an easy handball receive and kicked a goal.

He did some good work with the ball in his hands today, but I just find his lack of defensive effort to be unforgivable.

That's both an example for why he needs more time in the AFL and why he doesn't.

Jack probably never played in defense his whole career. Certainly not at underage level.

Look at our training over summer, a lot of running, a lot of ball movement, very little actual in close or under pressure defending. Has Jack played full match practice against Jeremy Howe or Tapscott over summer, I doubt it!

So if we are to make him a defender we certainly need to fix his mindset but more than that we need to train him as a defender. I don't expect him to be the best natural defender overnight. If he concedes a goal here and there I actually wont be too annoyed if its from poor position or choice. But at the moment its from poor attack on the footy which is really sad.

I've said it elsewhere too, but I didn't mind his attack today. He started off on the right foot going for a nice bump at the start of the game, he fought pretty hard for some ground balls. I think he's getting that bit ok.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
