Bored with the play today, I found myself looking at the boys, and wondering why they look like escapees from Ned Kelly's gang. Is there a common theme, (are they fundraising or something?) or are they just trying out a new look? There was some serious facial foresting going on - anyone enlighten me?

Apparently they are having a bet on who can grow the longest or best beard. Something like that and its for $50.

As Wayne Carey said instead of having stupid bets maybe focus on training and what you are meant to be doing game day.

Heard this on radio pre-game while driving to the ground - the defenders have a $50 bet going on who can keep their beard growing the longest.

It's one of those things that when you're winning no one cares about but when the side puts in a performance like todays people will use as an example of them being focused on things other than football.

Beards are the least of our problems

Norm Smith told Bernie Massie to remove his moustache or don't play - bring back that old style discipline I say! (I'm not sure about the link to success I must admit!)

Completely agree with Hardnut.

Neeld should start a team rule involving facial hair, where anybody sporting facial hair needs to complete extra ice bath and training sessions. Maybe they'll learn something while they're at it.

Footy first, once they're consistently playing deep into the finals they can start screwing about and playing funny buggers.Until then i'll be the party-pooper teling them to pull their heads in.

They can do what they want in their own time if they are good enough, sadly today they look a shambles and played like it. The defenders would be better off having a $50 bet on who can beat their opponent and win a contest. Watts I have stuck by you for a while, (I'm not a Nic Nat fan my choice that draft was Hurley) but FFS son when the chips are down look inside yourself and at least get to the contest and hit it hard, you never know what might happen. Shave the beard and the head and FFS get some c#*t into you.

Guys, it's true some of the defenders had a bet going on.

All was going well off the field ('A' grade training results etc and set for a big match today) until some smarty bum official at the club showed them an old scanlons footy card (see below) of the previous club record holder.

The shock on Watt's face in the interview tonight had nothing to do with today's loss!!

Still, sometimes you need to make a statement that things are going to change and the players all deciding to shed that facial hair and knuckle down to concentrating on the one goal of winning games might be a symbolic way of doing that and setting an example to the rest of the team.

I'm really not sure that growing a beard is such a huge distraction. I grew a beard once and found that my focus on all aspects on life remained the same as it was on days I shaved.

Posted

Talking about not shaving as an indicator of success or failure, spare me.

It's not an indicator of success or failure. The point is to take a very minuscule matter and to turn it into an example of players making a commitment to do something different.

Little things like that can help you change your focus when it's needed and it's worked in my workplace on a number of occasions in different ways to very good effect.

Agree fully WJ. It's another "one percenter". We only have to find another 99 and we'll be cooking.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
