The Grinter Award ... New for 2013?

Firstly, some will be aware that this concept was coined over at our friends 'Ology (not sure by which poster) a couple of seasons ago. So, credit where it's due.

In keeping with the new push for a more ruthless, harder-edged MFC, the 'hardest team to play against' and all that goes with that, I would like to propose that Demonland co-opt this award concept for the 2013 season and beyond.

Voting would be a simple weekly 3-2-1 and given by posters to the the players who did the most to transform the external perception of Melbourne as a club that prefers footy of the 'bruise-free' variety. I'm not talking about senseless acts of thuggery here, but within-the-rules acts of bravery and brutality that make the whole side walk taller.

Just like the great man "Balls" Grinter himself.

Great idea .

Tapscott and Jetta will be waving the flag for us next year .

The thing about Balls was that he was also an exceptionally good mark and kick as well as being fearless.

He wasn't just a thug or a hitman .

He had incredible anticipation that allowed him to hit a contest at full speed.

and he was a beautiful looking young man when he wore his teeth .

Give it to and re-name it the Jack Viney award.

Strawbs O'Dwyer what an animal!

If Jake Spencer can emulate that sort of spirit he might have a decent career at the MFC.

i still can't believe terry wallace walked straight into grinters elbow back in '88 and caused him to recieve a 6 week suspension

harden up terry ^_^

I support the said award balls and all. Get the administrators to tee it up with a poll or something similar at the end of each round!

Pretty sure I gave it it's name on Demonology.

Hope it doesn't get co-opted here but not my call...

What if we call it "The Balls and All" Award.

More PC?

You can't take Demonology's award title and gloss over it by giving them "credit" for it. It would be outright plagiarism to adopt this; if I put my Demonology member hat on, I'd view this as a kick in the teeth.

balls played footy for the MFC not a website that needs an engine rebuild.

The Northey years should be highlighted right now. The club can get tough quickly.

The Grinter award was introduced to Demonology by a poster who contributes here and given that Demonology is still alive, albeit not thriving just yet, but nevertheless a going concern and intends to conduct the Grinter in 2013, perhaps it would be only fair to select another hard man.

My suggestion would be the Biffin award.

great idea! another possible name would be the 'wrecker' award, named after Whelan?

The Big Carl award

has the Big Carl ever been invited back to the Demons for functions. I know he is an Aints favorite son, but he was also a Captain Coach for Melbourne who played 2 stints for us. He was a fantastic tough player. I know Robbie Flower was not happy when he went back to St. Kilda coz he did not want to play against him.

Big Carl protected only those who wore the same jumper. For that reason Robbie was stoked when he returned!!

Why not just something simple and to the point: "The Todd"

The Strawbs O'Dwyer Award would fit nicely

who remembers the war at Windy hill that Strawbs & Simon Madden had in 1990 against each other?

Both guys rucked all day & left blood and teeth in the centre circle for it.

It was an epic win that day.

One of my top demon 10 favourite players. Famously told the press to never darken his door again after his one and one presser when he became captain coach. heard the end of of a bit on SEN the other morning about Saints players with mo's. He had some nickname i hadn't heard. The Shadow? (i cant recall if that was it)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
