Losing draft picks in 2014

If we are penalised - and Id like to reiterate my view that we wont be because there is a sparsity of hard evidence (and rather just varying recollections of a flippant comment made in 2009) - and that penalty is the loss of draft picks, such as our first two picks in the 2014 draft - how significant an impact do you believe it will have?

Considering Neeld and others believe we already have a good core group of young talent coming through who need older players to support them, given that there are never guarantees that early draft choices will become great players and quite often they dont and some pretty good players have come through from other sources such as rookie listings, etc.

Im really thinking that if we can keep our picks in this year's draft we might be ok long term even if we lose picks by utilising trades, rookie listing and picking up free agents and delistings with potential to top up our young talent?

Will allow us to develop a culture where winning is everything and losing bares no reward. I'd almost welcome a loss of picks.

We are on the road to recovery, and are the last team that can afford to give up first round draft picks! What happens if Hogan ends up being gumbleton or a Mitch Thorp? Then our reserves don't look so good.

I agree, I wouldn't be too disappointed if it occurred in the 2013 draft (end of next year), but I would be horrified if it occurred in this years draft.

I can see a huge up side to having the likes of Viney and Wines in the same team, I would love to see them train hard together, push one another, influence others, and win the contested footy for the next decade together. Whereas 2014 we will have Hogan come through and the core list should be getting closer to their prime football age (24-26). Of course I don't want any picks taken, but if it does happen I hope it makes or helps the club develop that winning culture we keep hearing of. Who knows they may even get good at player recycling.

They will probably take pick 88 off us this year. It's obviously an important pick because it got traded 3 times. We wanted that pick 88 so bad.

It also dashes "hope" and our appeal to sponsors - huge damage. We will lose members revenues and gate takings . If the AFL remains committed to 18 Clubs it will have to pump more money into the MFC than it has already. They are shooting themselves in the foot - as I think Demetriou has realised all along. Would we be where we are now if he hadn't been at the Olympics?

It wont break us (as others said don't see it happening) if it's only for one draft that being 2013.

Despite what the hand ringers say in Hogan we already have a first round pick so if they take our first two picks in next years draft we wont be as bad off as we would had we not taken Hogan.

Carlton were crippled for a few years because they were banned from two drafts but also had a very aging list while we are in the opposite position.

So IMO if we lose our first two picks in next years draft not by being scapegoated but with a smoking gun appearing, we just take our whack and move on. We are just starting to build our new culture and will be stronger in another twelve months.

We must however maintain pick 4 this year to assist us should we lose picks next year

I don't think it would be as big a hit as if it happened when there was no Free Agency. A club can pick up very good ready made players without needing to trade, or develop players for years hoping they'll come good. That said i don't think we'll be punished at all.

free Agency will help the situation i agree. But it is still a huge wack.

The reason we are accused of this mess is precisely high draft picks.

I dare say that if we had have known possible sanctions were coming, relieving us of our draft picks in 2013, we might not have traded Morton for peanuts, and maybe held onto Bennell, Gysberts or Cook.

For my two bobs worth on this whole thing, if and a big IF, the AFL does find us 'guilty' do you really think the Club are just going to wear the consequences when other Clubs have done exactly the same thing and gone 'unpunished'.............this will be setting a very dangerous precedent

Im not an expert, not even close.

But i dot think it would work to take this years draft picks away from the club.

What would they do with them? i.e. they couldn't give them to other clubs

they couldn't just move the numbers down the list so that for instance pick 5 now becomes 4, because at the very end of the draft it means there will be x more young kids that wot get drafted.

So that was my thinking that led me to think if its draft picks they take, it will be in future drafts.

If anyone knows anything different i would appreciate a second view.

The question of the many thousands was would we lose draft picks, my answer was if that is the case we will fight and fight and fight so no, in my humble opinion of course, personally in all this I think Chris Connoly will fall on his sword

pretty much in agreement with you. Not willing to make a call on CC yet. It is so far only Wilson who has produced a sword.

Two years would be a big hit, but I think we can live with losing the first two picks next year. No doubt it would hurt, but it's not going to be fatal - especially if we can reach 11th or 12th this year and 'only' miss out on pick 7/8 as our first choice.
