Fox Footy - RD 1 versus Lions

jumbo returns

Watched this game today and looking back, what a wasted year by Neeld in some respects.

Moloney, Green and Davey were all cooked before the season started.

Rivers was still handballing to a stagnant target, Joel Mc was trying to mark from behind, Martin was running around like a headless chook and Bartram was brave, but inadequate.

Cleanout time.

i started that day with such high hopes. The minute of clapping for Jimmy. I mean we were pumped.

By the 3rd Quarter i was shattered. Season over.

The game was baked by half time, WYL.

Such an emotional day.

was it over by half time??

I don't remember feeling numb then...but i do remember people Booing in the MCC Reserve during the 3rd.

But you just watched it all, my memory is dim on that day.

I just remember being surly

I watched the game from a bar in Koh Samui on the first day of my Honeymoon. I vividly recall leaving the pub before half time pretty disgusted by what I'd seen. I received texts from a mate telling me what happened afterwards - I was praying that he was joking. No such luck!

But yes - it was pretty dull by half time. Not sure how you can say it's a wasted year by Neeld in relation to Green, Davey and Moloney - it's not like he signed them up!

I've rewatched EVERY game in the last few weeks - it was that or self flaggelation. We improved quite markedly as the year went on, and the players dropped like flies with injury.

We will build on that despite the naysayers, handwringers and powderpuffs that seem to dominate this site.

I agree with your points angrydee

We were shocking to start off the season - and by the end of the year played some competitive footy with a below average list.

By no means do I think we are close to competing with the best, but I feel ok with where we are heading. We lack quality players in a couple key positions and mature bodies to back up our captians -

It's interesting to look back how the club address early season issues/losses and cleaned up a lot of the un-tidy turnovers and uncontested possessions counts.

Hopefully 2013 can kick off like round 12 or 13 against GWS where we I thought it stated to click for some players (not all) but I am still confident Neeld can get us there.

What was dissapointing for me is after the famous toughest ever preseason the players had, i thought we we. re going to come out super fit and play relentless uncompromising football. That game set the tone for the year that was to come.

The despair on the faces of the team after the game told a story didnt it?

Even though Beamer had told previously me they understood the new plan but were unsure how it would stand up under pressure they, like everyone at the ground, obviously expected a better show than that.

I sat next to a recently retired champ that day who said something like "they're training all the flair out of them....maybe that will come later" and laughed when I suggested that at least they'd learnt to "play ugly".

Sitting on the other side of me was a Tibetan Buddhist Lama who asked why so many players were crowding around the Melbourne goal but not the Bribane goal.

But watching it again I think it is fair to say they got a bit better as the year progressed...unfortunately that was pretty much true of every team,so if Neeld is hanging his hat on that I'd suggest he might want to keep an eye on said hat in case someone takes it and offers it to someone else around round 10 next year.

I had such high hopes too. I seem to recall us kicking the first goal too? That 3rd quarter was a heart breaker

Total shocker....we kicked the first 3 points.

Now I'm watching West Coast use the boys as a training drill but there are 2 positives emerging.....Nathan Jones is enormous and Clark is a monster....bring on 2013!

LIVE AND LET DIE by Meggs

The Demons’ impressive late season charge to finals will most likely come unstuck this Saturday evening when the Bombers blow up the also-ran Blues in the Ikon Park double-header.   To mangle McCartney, what does it matter to ya? To have any chance to play next week Narrm has got a job to do and needs to do it well.  We’ve got to give the Pie sheilas hell, say live and let die! It’s Indigenous Round for this game and the chance to celebrate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres

Failed to fulfill the promise of his breakout six goal effort against the Tigers in 2023 and was generally disappointing as a key forward. It remains to be seen whether Simon Goodwin will persevere with him in attack or return him to the backline where he was an important cog in the club’s 2021 premiership success. After a bright start to the season, playing mostly in defence, Howes seemed to lose his way in midseason but fought back with some good performances at Casey and finished the year back at AFL level. Originally an NBL basketballer with the Brisbane Bullets, he moved across town in 2019 to the AFL Lions where he played 19 games before crossing to Melbourne where he was expected to fill a role as a back up ruckman/key forward. Unfortunately, didn’t quite get there although he did finish equal sixth in Casey’s best and fairest award. Date of Birth: 23 February 1999 Height: 198cm Games CDFC: 14 Goals CDFL: 13

Sadly, had to wrap up a great career in midstream on the back of multiple concussions which culminated in the Maynard hit in the 2023 Qualifying Final. His loss to the club was inestimable over and above his on field talent given his character and leadership qualities, all of which have been sorely missed. The son of former Demon Brownlow Medalist Shane, Taj added a further 16 games to his overall tally of games but a number were as substitute. He is slowly fitting into the team structure but without doing anything spectacular and needs to take further steps forward in 2025 for his career to progress.
