Looks like pick 13 is going to St Kilda as Compensation for losing Goddard.

So we're 14 now? Shithouse!

Still, we are 13 though because Essendon will bid on Daniher who was never available to us- or am I reading this wrong?

Will StKilda take soemone we are eyeing off?

Posted

how do u know this? I would think mid first round compensations would go in draft order. Could not image St. Kilda would get a pick lower than that for a free agent.

Posted

They'd both be mid first round compensation picks, not sure how you're arriving at St Kilda getting theirs first.

so its not based on the departing player's club ladder position?

Posted

Remember it's compensations for the NET result over the free agency period. So if they pick up someone else that gets factored in.

Ie if they lost Goddard but got q lynch then they aren't likely to get pick 13. (Hypothetically)

Out Goddard

In lynch, 3rd round pick

so it will be pick 13 for them if they don't bring any FA in?

Heres hoping they get someone then. Don't care who they affect after our 13.

What I don't like about FA is that, it seems, the Bombers get Goddard without surrendering anything.

???

That's how ALL free agency works - you only surrender the cap space.

$800 k for 4 years is a wack!

I tend to agree with Paul Roos. I think under the previous system Goddard would stay a saint under a 3 yr deal. Ie. Roos said it was a sad day for footy.

It appears that the weaker clubs will be fighting tooth and nail to gain any traction in FA, where as the stronger clubs (or even bigger clubs well positioned) will find it easier.

You have got it nailed there H_T

Anywhere in sport you like to check free agency means the powerful stay powerful and the weak stay down.

The only saving grace is the AFL does have a Salary cap.

Even with this saver it makes the job of the clubs like the MFC much harder.

Our drafting over the next couple of years is going to be critical to the very survival of the MFC.

If we are still in the bottom half dozen in 2015 we are doomed to be an also ran for as long as we survive after that time.

Poor drafting like the last ten years will IMO see the end of the club around the end of this decade.

i do not disagree with that, but it just highlights the fact that we buggered up the last 5 years.

By now we should be attracting better players, the fact we are not is our own fault.

The MFC is going to have to fight like never before to build a playing list.

Not fill 30% of it with project players.

I think it is a good thing, but it will be bloody tough to begin with.

I heard it was $750,000.

A fair price for someone who is easily top 10 in the competition at his best, it's certainly worth it.

sure it could be, but it will squeeze out other players at the other end.

The Salary Cap limits must be watched very closely by the AFL.

Um, kinda the point.

I think he knows that is the point.

He either doesn't agree with it and/or like many, will take a bit of time to get used to.

Which I can totally understand.

Put yourself in a St.Kilda supporters perspective. Your side is competitive, you've just lost a number one pick, and you're not 100% on what the compensation will be in return. And it's cost Essendon a bit of space in their cap, without giving a pick(s) or player.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
