3 Years for Jamar and McKenzie - seriously?

Be that as it may Rover, I always find it hilarious when people make those what would the club know? *I* say we should do this! posts. Everyone's an expert.

I'm all for discussing the merits of various decisions. I'm even all for discussing this topic. But I reserve the right to ridicule anyone who carries on like they know more on the topic than the club does.

The ridicule would be fine if we could actually see the club making verfiably correct decisions.

I was watching the Channel 7 footy show right as I typed that last sentence and right on cue they showed highlights of Patrick Dangerfield destroying the Suns yesterday.

The club has shown time after time that they have failed miserably and can't be trusted to make the right decisions so yes, I believe on certain topics posters here do know more than the club.

Jordie has had a few good seasons but his role really is the tagging tackler - he's strength isnt disposal and either we get better midfielders so we dont try to use him to move the ball or he improves. 3 Years is a surprise but Neeld must like him.

We have far bigger problems than Jordie McKenzie, and I am comfortable that he would be on a wage that is below the competition average.

I said at the time that the decision to sign Jamar for three years was a disgrace, and he has done nothing since to prove me wrong. We are basically a player short every time Jamar is on the field - 14 games this year for 8.3 disposals, 2.1 marks and 1.6 tackles a game, plus a single goal for the entire season. (By comparison, Jake Spencer 8 games for 9.3 disposals, 2.5 marks and 3.8 tackles a game, plus two goals.) The worst thing is that Jamar would almost certainly be in our top 25% highest paid players.

There is simply no justification for Mark Jamar being offered 3 years. In fact if we're serious about filling the list with competitive contributors, he shouldn't be there at all. Both Jake Spencer and particularly Stef Martin are much better footballers. The Russian is slow, predictable, can't keep his feet, rarely takes a mark, let alone contested, and is defensively non-existent. If Martin, Spencer and Gawn stay fit next year, he simply won't get a game, so 3 years is just laughable!

Jordie, as with James Magner, is simply a VFL level talent with an AFL heart. I desperately hope neither of them can get a game within the next 2 years, or our midfield is just getting worse.

I compared JM against Cameron Ling and taking into account a couple of factors, he stacks up ok. The Cats were the kings of flicking the ball around so it is a fair comparison. Lings disposal was better but Geelongs spread was far superior to us giving Ling easier targets.

JM averaged 17 disposals, CL 21. CL has a couple of extra marks but a couple less tackles.

A point I have made before, that Jordie would have looked lovely behind Ablett and Bartel (and others) in the Geelong midfield exactly as Ling did.

In my opinion teams need a good to great tagger who is usually just an ok player.

Clint Jones from the Saints.

Ryan Crowley from Freo.

Alan Toovey from Collingwood.

Nick Smith from Sydney.

Troy Selwood from West Coast.

None of those guys are stars, but play vital parts in big games.

I am not worried about Jordie, when the class develops around him you won't even notice his negatives.

Jamar - one dimensional ruck man who has had one terrific season in 9 years at the club. He has struggled with injury this year and is already looking so slow. Doesn't offer anything once the ball hits the ground, and can't rest forward.

McKenzie - an absolute battler who tries his heart out but can't kick over a jam tin and can't run out of sight - two pretty important elements in modern football.

What on earth was our 'wonderful' new football department thinking giving these blokes three years each? I understand they're both great guys but surely 2 years would have been more than enough. When you combine these decisions with the FD's obsession with blokes like Bail, you really have to wonder what's going on at this club.

Fourth in B&F, plus the coach's award. Still think Jordie isn't worth a three year deal? Obviously the FD rate him!

What a shite thread this is.

Not as shite as our list management & recruiting over the past 10 years. You're obviously a typical Melbourne supporter who thinks the the sun shines out of the backside of all our players. You probably maintain Luke Williams and Juice Newton deserved another year. Time to pull your head out of your backside mate and start questioning these decisions. Why our hands are tied this year with Morton and Davey? Atrocious list management.

Because 4th in the Melbourne football club 2012 best and fairest is such an amazing achievement? A defender that spent the second half of the year struggling at half forward came 5th FCS - should we sign rivers for 3 more and turn him into a key forward? McKenzie is heart and soul, no doubting that, but he's an extremely limited footballer who wouldn't get a game in a top 8 side. if he is a regular in 2015 then we will almost be extinct, we must be going that badly. 2 years would have been more than enough. It's not as though he was going to get a scully deal from an opposition club.

So you think our coaching staff is rubbish? They are the ones voting for these awards and they are the ones giving him a three year deal...

Jamar is shot IMO, I've said so since June.

Why we signed Jamar for a 3 year deal is beyond me.

The only plus is that he will be a good ruck coach.

I didn't know we signed Jordie up for 3 years either, thats basically sums us up.

I think Jordie would be a good country footballer though.

If we had more players with McKenzie's tenacity we wouldn't be in the crap we're in right now.

He gets 3 years because he is a "Neeld" type. Will stand up in a final.

Jordie's only knock is his kicking. If he can fix it he would be more than handy!

Please.

Keeping an AA ruckman until they are 32 and giving the hardest working bloke in this shizen team three years is hardly constitute a cause celebre for our poor list management.

And leave me out of your emotional outbursts.

You too eh ... gonna be a long off-season.

the way we have been travelling over the last 5 years you'd reckon we would be able to deal with a season in chaos and a long off season.....and potentially would have exhausted the well of low brow threads.

Alas it is not so......prepare yourself for months more of this in the lead up to 2013 when the plan all suddenly clicks and we start to win a few games !

Ridiculous comments on this thread. All these heroes who think they know more than the club and then will flame anyone who disagrees.

Do we know how much jordie is being paid? How many people bagging jordie bagged jones three years ago. Hint all of you ( as there were only about three people defending him.)

How many people can comment on jamar injuries? How many can comment on his contribution to training? How many of you same fools would have been screaming If he left to go to another club. Hint you will all claim that you would be happy to see him go but everyone knows how you would have been keyboard warriors if he had of left

Before mindlessly bagging engage your brain

Cale Morton.

What possible relevance does Cale Morton have in this discussion?

Who exactly was involved in the decision to select Morton that is still at the club, making this a relevant factor?

If it's just blind venting then fine, but it's not logical.

Bagging or commenting ?

Those, such as myself, that were concerned by Jones' output have been vindicated by his improvement over the last couple of years and especially this year. Those that thought he was terrific 3 years ago should now realise how wide of the mark they were.

I usually rate your posts but you being revisionary here. No one was arguing that he had output above a c level. the debate was more around whether he would ever be better than a b and most argued that a lack of awareness and bad decision making meant he would never get better.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
