Selwood has decent kicking skills. Please stop comparing a player like him to Wines. Nobody has a great insight into Wines kicking although from the limited vision on youtube it doesn't seem to be amazing.

How does Wines compare to Mayes and O'rourke as a 'complete' midfielder? Do they have better pace or kicking skills? Can anyone shed some light?

Nice post earlier steve BTW, one thing I will say is prior to writing off some of our inside... or one dimensional players is perhaps to wait and assess once we get the feeling that the players have fully grasped the way Neeld wants them to play. I think they know 'how' but they need to be instinctive in playing this style of football.

Some of those players like McKenzie and Nicholson etc... once they start feeling how to play they will start to look like they have more time, and they will perceive this and therefore their disposal under pressure I believe will be better as a result. Not all will make it, and it's possible that all of those that you have highlighted might not be the way forward.... but some of these guys were seen as better players than some of those you see running round at Hawthorn, Sydney, Collingwood etc... the task is for Neeld, the other coaches and Neil Craig to rewire how these players think and play their football.

Wines is not one dimensional, he gets the ball gives then runs off to recieve again.

He is also a noted goalkicking midfielder.

I think we can safely say its either Toumpas or Wines.

The only way we would get Toumpas is if we did a back room deal as part of the 3 and 13 swap with GWS.

If not, then all my money is on Wines

One would assume that Whitfield and Grundy will be gone by our pick (don't want Grundy anyway). That means that the likes of Toumpas, O'Rourke and Wines will be there at 3 & 4. Hopefully Toumpas is there at pick 4, making the decision all too easy.

Drafting a player like Wines will only help fast track the gaping void of leadership and work ethic at the club. As an added bonus, he's bloody good footballer.

That's cool. It wasn't your opinion, I can tell you love the club and know your stuff. It's that you mentioned Magner, Couch, Bail, Nicho as the players I have covered in the same inside mid category as the Hawks and Swans mids. And I had not. The right facts and opinion is fine.

Oh and sorry Wines ticks another box. No injury clouds over him. Make that 8 plus points.

One player who seems to have been overlooked in all of this talk about recruiting midfielders is Couch... I believe he had quite a good VFL season and I would think that after another full pre-season, he may well be ready for the big time. I won't be too fussed if we go for a Grundy with pick 4 (if available).

So our top 20 picks if we get more, we need more class. If we end up with 4 first Rnd picks, I'd be happy if we take 2 draftees + 2 mature players, or we have to trade for maturity.

I like Wines but he seems to hunt the ball not naturally read it. If there is a choice between Toumpas and Wines its clearly Toumpas for what I have seen. However I would will not be too concerned if its Toumpas over any others.

Yep me too. Look at all the best competitors in different sports around the world and the one thing they have in common is an utter disgust and hatred of losing. Doesn't matter if it's Dermott Brereton or Michael Jordan. There are lots of players that can have all the skills but it is that killer competitiveness that separates the very good from the greats.

It seems that Wines is moving up the pecking order, as all other Mock drafts etc have had him 5 -8 in the draft. Hells Gate has told us the club will pick him at 4 if available. He has the physical attributes to compete next year.

'Wines is not the fastest player, but still gets to the ball 1st and away from packs because his reading of the play was so good raw pace didnt matter' (or words to that effect)

, mmm . yep , ive played a bit of sport , squash , A grade and school footy , and i can tell ya right now , as soon as you go thru that door it full on , win at all cost , fairly tho , , but if ya get beat ya curse and carry on for a few mins , and then its done its over , you learn and move on , , if you sook all week , you just get beat again , so yeah he moves on , thats cool with me

The competitive beasts don't just move on. They don't go into a depressive funk either but they use the pain to push them to success. I doubt Geelong just moved on after 2008. Doubt Essendon just moved on after being smashed by the Hawks in 1983. Doubt Barassi and the Demons just moved on after losing in 1958.

The greats use the pain of losing and the fear it will happen again they don't just move on.
