The blood rule is largely a hang up from AIDS/HIV hysteria, when these diseases were less understood than they are now. the risks really aren't that great - vague, poorly written Wikipedia articles notwithstanding (interesting that the sports named are almost all American - land of the free, home of the hysterical)

I'm not saying that there is no risk at all, or condoning the practice of wiping your blood on other people, but unless he was intentionally rubbing his open wound on the open wound of his opponent and/or his mouth, as opposed to on the guys clothing, then it really wasn't dangerous so much as distasteful (if someone did it to me i'd probably give them a whack for their troubles, but then I am a certified sufferer of white line fever )
