Magner and Couch are plodders. Not premiership players.

This view is too simplistic.

Not every player in a flag winning team is going to be a star, some (most) will be role players with about 6 or 7 A-graders/stars/whatever-you-want-to-call-them.

I'd prefer players who set the standard on the field thanks.

How many players does that leave us with?

Posted

Whose monty? Wanna bet your house on it? I wouldn't.

Ol' Lynden and ol' Joel have been consistently playing senior football this year and Neeld is on record wanting a more mature list.

I don't know what's going to happen, it's not easy to predict,

Unpredictable as it may be, my head will hit the desk hard if Dunn isn't delisted.

I'd accept Joel Macdonald playing one extra season. To me he is and always has been a year by year proposition - I think he's not that great a player but he's always genuinely competitive (unlike Dunn), so I think for a developing side he's probably adequate until he is unseated by someone superior. I was hopeful that would be Davis this year, but he hasn't come on yet. I think the case for keeping Macdonald and the case for delisting him have equal merit and it'll just boil down to how many spots we feel we want to clear.

As much as our list needs a talent boost, a mass overhaul is not the best way to do it IMO. Players picked later than the third round are most likely to be busts and are a reasonable chance to slip to us in the rookie draft in any event. They also require two-year deals, which impinges on our flexibility next year. We would be better off giving one-year contracts to players like Dunn, Macdonald and Bail than taking picks 60 and 70 in the draft.

You can think about who deserves a contract by placing them against a possible replacement:

Poss. replacement in order of priority:

1. Pick 3 or Viney

2. Pick 4

3. Cloke*

4. Boak*

5. Pick 13

6. Viney or Pick 30

7. Experienced FA - Sewell*

8. Delisted FA - Ellis*

9. Elevation of Nicholson

10. Pick 50

11. PSD Pick 3^

12. Delisted FA - Martin (Adel)*

13. Elevation of Evans

14. Elevation of Magner

* Not definite that we can get these targets obviously. Just examples.

^ The PSD may not have much talent.

Obviously, Boak or the like may mean some of those items on the list may be traded but the jist is about 7 to 14 legitimate possibilities for improving the list.

So for those you would give contracts for you have to rank them and see at what point what we have is better than what we can get.

It's up in the air...

No point elevating Magner (or Couch) if we need to free up list positions.

No point delisting them either.

Posted

He's played fewer games than ol' Lynden who is an absolute monty to be delisted.

I bet you Dunn stays.

He has been OK down back.

Get the panadol ready, because the mustache will stay another year.

You can only delist so many players. Dunn won't be one of them and nor should he be.

In a crap team he's a goose. In a good team, he's a quality 16-22 role player who does a job and stirs the pot.He offers a bit of the C word in a team completely bereft of it.

J MacDonald hasn't been offered a contract yet, but he's getting picked every week and he's reasonably confident of getting a 1 year deal. He's not much chop, but he's a big body and is adequate depth. With 40 fit players he's at Cranbourne, but you can't just have kids.

That line of thinking has got us nowhere.

Posted

Even if we wanted Dunn surely he would look elsewhere. He has been in and out in recent seasons and has only been played consistently this year but was still dropped after his first 5 games.

Same deal with Dunn as for many of our OOC or FAs - how we go in attracting FAs/trades will determine their fate.

I think you'd probably find that a bloke like Dunn and maybe Bate to a less degree (due to his ever changing role in the side, and the sub par results as a mid) have played for the club for so long that they'd prefer to stay than go. It might be the romantic 1 club player ideal but i wouldnt have thought Dunn would get a better run at any other club apart from Port, GCS or GWS and with a young child probably lieks playing in melbourne.

He looks like finishing this year on 99 games.

He's not a good footballer but he can play roles & is athletically gifted.

So, I'm not a Panadol user, But I think I'll have to buy a box to get me thru next year.

I think Dunn's got J-Mac covered for versatility and that's what'll get him over the line.

We need a few blokes who can play angry and wind up opposition players, I agree.

There are other threads but I think they are messy and I can't be stuffed going looking for something NQR.

Here are the contracts for people who think a contracted Martin will be gone or for those fans worried about what Healy said to McLardy last night about youngsters not re-signing.

As rhaz brought up in another thread - the Vets List is to be abolished and the Primary List extended to 40. With that in mind it makes me reassess those that I think will be maintained...

I have added the vacancies number list for clarity.

How can you be so sure that he would go okay in a good team when he barely manages to hold a spot in a poor team? Stirring the pot aside, I can't see Dunn being of value (let alone 16-22 role play) in a top team.

Move him on now.

This is my thinking ^^^

Bit of faith in Moloney to bring something next year. And agonised over Cook but if you are not there, you are not there. Trading of Bail or Gysberts, or the possible retirement of Davey will change this of course. Prefer MacDonald over Dunn.

To be replaced by:

Nat Draft 3, 4, 13, and Viney.

2 FAs

ND50/FA

PSD 3/FA

Nicholson and Evans upgraded.

All that equals 10. A qtr of the list.

Jurrah to be delisted and placed on the Rookie List via Delisted FA (I have not read anything about whether this is possible but I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible. There is no max contract for Rookies)

Not a bad scenario there RPFC. I'd like moloney to stay, but worry about his mindset and buy in to the new way of doing things. The coaches will know wheather this is even an issue or just speculation based on his poor form this year. The reality is that every year that Beamer has played for us and not been injured he's been one of our better players. I'm happy to put this year down as a poor one and move on if he is.

I'd like to hold onto Gysberts. I think with another preseason and better luck with injuries he can be next years "howe or Blease" - younger players starting to step up.

Bail i can live without, as aside from running hard doesnt offer allot. I actually think that if Evans can stay fit he will take Bail's spot in the 22.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
