I'm a new poster to this forum but have been an avid reader for many years. I admire everybody's passion for our beloved Dees.

I notice on Demonology there is a post regarding our propensity for picking the "wrong" brother when recruiting. I guess there has been a lot of instances to support that view. However I think their have been some notable exceptions but as usual with Melbourne, there was a sting in the tail. We picked Alan Jakovich who made a lasting impact on our club in what was brief career. Glen was a legend at WCE and played in two premierships. I guess his longevity brought him out in front.

We also drafted Darren Jarman, clearly the best of those brothers but the "sting" was that he wouldn't come to the club.

I think it is too early to say that we drafted the wrong Grimes. We certainly thought we got the best one but Grimes the younger has come on this year big time.

I'm sure our recruiters try their best but it is about time we drafted a legitimate star that ignites this club and it's long suffering members.

I can only be thankful that the draft wasn't around in the early seventies otherwise I fear we may have drafted Tom instead of Robbie!!

Isn't our Jetta a cousin?

and for the record I don't think any of us would have traded A Jakovich for his brother. Sure Glen was a great servant and won 2 premierships. But no-one would have missed being a part of the ride that Allan provided :)

Got the wrong Jetta

Even worse olisik. There are two Jettas better than ours (at this stage!)

I'd forgotten about Ottens and Gaspar. What were we thinking?

Might be worth hanging onto Nev for a while then as it took Leroy five years to get a kick.

My brothers picked Essendon (my Mum's team), I picked Melbourne (my Dad's team).

Never recovered from that decision.

Yet.

No way. Wouldn't trade Jako's quick burn career for the other Jakovich ever.

Surely Allen Jakovich is a legend of MFC?

Nice first post Demonism. The Bennell's are I believe cousins as are the Jetta's. As for Allen Jackovich he is without doubt one of my all-time favourite MFC players. Cocky, brash, flawed and insanely talented.

We got the right Smith (Norm) but originally wanted to sign Len....phew!!

Yep, glad we got the one with the right attitude who flogged all of Len's ideas!

The whole Grimes family go for the Demons and I believe there are two or three more brothers to come, some of the family associated with north eastern melb local footy.

No one else rated Richmond's Grimes that highly, right?

I hope we rated him as he has been playing some really good games of late. He went in the rookie draft in which I think we obviously rated Joel MacDonald higher

Same here Paul!

While we are on it - what about the success or otherwise of our father/sons? Barassi was the best but then David Cordner certainly wasn't.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
