Whats up with our Captains?

Very frustrating that these two young Captains, arent leading the way.

Young or not, they were chosen as captains and must do alot more.

If Watts and Green are always copping criticism, then these two deserve just as much if not more.

So far this year you'd swearJones was the captain the way he has been attacking it.

It doesn't matter who has the title of captain, because it's clear who our real on-field leader is. Mitch Clark I'm sure is commanding the respect of his team-mates and taking the pressure off our two young Jacks, who are now really just captains in name only.

It maybe says something that they both started on the bench, it wouldn't surprise me to see Trengove at Casey next week. It might just take a bit of pressure off him, needs to happen with some sensible press release. I.e "We treat all our players equal, and its jacks' turn to go back and find some form"

Sending JT to Casey would only increase the attention on him which would result in an increase of pressure on him. He won't be dropped...there are a few that are in line for that well ahead of him.

Hurry up and make Mitch the captain.

In defense of Grimes he is trying to get back into the game after a ordinary run of injuries. I almost worry Trengove is trying too hard because he feels he has to prove the validity of his captaincy. Too young for mine. needs to concentrate on his game.

Are we going to have to put up with threads like these every week?

The two Jacks are learning on the job. Don't expect Voss and Hird in their third and fourth years of football.

They have been picked to grow into the role. Get used to it!

It's a terrible mistake that Neeld has made. As I wrote in his thread in the locker room - he put blind faith in players during preseason, and has been made to look like a fool.

Easy in hindsight, and I didn't nominate him, but Jones is our Captain. Only bloke in 6 games this year that could walk away with a pass mark in each game.

Trengove got 21 possessions, 3 most in the team. But, yes, he had little impact. Trenners is too good a player too keep this form. Remember he is still developing despite his captain tag

Everyone is acting like Jones is the new Robbie Flower because he crumbed a few goals last week. I've got no doubt Clark is the best on field leader at the moment and Jones is certainly having a dip, but why does that mean we have to attack Grimes and Trengove who stand out as players and as leaders.

Grimes is getting back to form. He certainly still attacks the ball and rebounds as good as any defender on our list. He'll start to tighten up defensively with more games and a better team. He's also getting moved around a bit for the sake of the team.

Trengove on the other hand is getting bashed for remarkably little. How did Montagna go last week? Did he towel us up as he usually does, or was he somewhat restricted by Trengove. I think it was the latter.

They were our top two ball-winners. You can't say that's not a drastic improvement.

i love both of them, and think they were great choices for captains, but Trengove is horribly out of form and Grimes still makes some horrendous errors. i have no problem giving them time, as the are only 20ish, but they weren't good today.

It's not because of last week. It's not even because he is or isn't good. It's because he's the most inspirational guy that we could have for captain.

Look it's a tough one. None of last year's leaders deserved captaincy. Our seniors players from last year are PATHETIC.

Grimes and Trenners basically got the job because there was literally noone else.

But now they are the captains.

And they show ZERO on-field leadership.

It's a very big problem

I'm still happy with these 2. They were far from our worst today. Especially with Grimes, I'm not sure what more people were expecting in terms of on field performance.

Unless you said pre-season that Mitch Clark should of been captain, which I didn't hear a single person say, then STFU. Worse than retrospective drafting.

They are both growing into the role and in the fullness of time I believe Neeld's decision will be proven to be the right one. The criticism of Trengove especially is a bit hard to cop given the performances of some other far more experienced players in the side today. Jones is giving great support as a member of the leadership group, as did Frawley today and Clark as well.

Both played reasonably well. JT was pretty good .No problems in the Captaincy dept?

JT has not been great this year, but thought he was okay today ran out the game well and is one who actually runs to support his players.

He got a lesson in hard work last week from Lenny Hayes and on face value today took something from it. Will stay in on todays performance, Grimes still finding form and coming along okay,

Both will grow into the role

Stupid, stupid, bloody stupid playing them from the bench at the start. They are supposed to be leaders and showing the way from the beginning. I'm starting to think WTF is up with Neeld.

I initially thought Beamer for Captain, Clarke for VC and Trengove for DVC. Now i think Clarke as Captain with Jones as VC and that's it.

There's no other players out there who stick their hands up pretty much every week and give us something, regardless of the opposition or the scoreboard. That's the mark of leadership IMO. Performing and leading by example under adversity.

Trengove and Grimes just need to be allowed to play and learn and grow as young developing up and coming footballers without the extra "expectation" burden that comes with being a captain. Not too early for Neeld to change this around. First year coach, should be allowed a few early blunders and adjustments on the run i reckon. And who was to know we were gonna get this kind of output and leadership from Clark in the heat of the battle? Born leader i reckon.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
