How do you see this happening with two captains? It will be interesting to see if one plays a passive role, or if the players naturally gravitate to one.

They may both rotate the coin toss/pep talk prior to game and alternate at each others understanding.

Players may naturally gravitate to one over time, or equally both. One thing's for sure it's an exciting phase that I'm sure every Melbournefc supporter member will be looking forward to.

And I'm sure there will be much analysis here about it in 2012 and beyond. ie. A change to one captain - that's bound to be discussed.

Something that has dominated my thinking since the announcement is the role Brent Moloney takes on gameday.

We all see him revving up the players and talking to them in the huddle before games and at every break.

I mentioned earlier in the year that Moloney should not take these talks in lieu of Brad Green.

Now with a 20 year old and a 22 year old in charge I am debating in my head the merits of taking what is usually the domain of a captain and giving it to someone who isn't even in the Leadership Group.

I am still of the belief that this is important to how a captain is seen and recieved on the field and I would like someone at the club to tell Brent to let his captains have this duty.

Leaders lead. We have two outstanding young leaders and they will lead. Thats why they were chosen

That doesn't stop BM or Rivers, Davey or Green being an on-field leader though. It would still be expected of them.

I don't think the captain needs to be in charge of pre-game pep talks .

Listening to the same bloke waving his arms , yelling red faced before everygame would soon turn to white noise .

Judging by some of our starts I'm not sure Beamers antics are working anyhow .

WYL he is our best midfielder. Unless i read your post wrong. He is still very important to our team. Regardless of being a recognised leader or not.

I dont see a problem if the issue of up staging is not present. Moloney is clearly more extroverted than others. Players address pre and during game pressure differently. So long as each players preferences/antics are assessed as being to the betterment of the team then it should be OK. Its something for the FD to monitor. The FD has made a big call on the leadership group. The FD need to ensure that they back them to the hilt.

I agree with you Russell. As long as one doesn't put down others in their quest to lead.

I'd like to see Moloney do whats natural for him. We want more leaders not less.

It was misjudgement from a player who tried to push himself and failed. Clap him in irons I say.

He's not a captain, nor in the leadership group. Therefore, he pipes down with the other listed players, puts his head over the footy and follows instructions.

Simple as that I reckon.

I will say this - I feel more strongly about this when the captain is fledgling or struggling to put is imprint on the position. Green was struggling as captain and the last thing he needs is for Moloney's helping hand in the form of his voice.

If you command respect as the leader and there are no questions surrounding your role then it would be easier for another to do this duty.

I think the opposite. It's a bit chicken/egg.

In the absence of leadership from those who are supposed to be leading some feel it is thier responsibility to take the mantle.

Hopefully in time Brent will not feel that there is a need to fill that hole. At the same time he is a mouthy street fighter and I think there is a place for them at footy clubs, I wouldn't want to see him supress himself too much.

Or perhaps both the player and the support staff genuinely thought that Brent was up to the task at the time. There's no doubt now that he shouldn't have played, but let's not confuse hindsight with foresight. We weren't there, so we can't assume that it was obvious at the time.

I would also be careful sporting statements making uninformed allegations about the actions or competency of medical staff. Not wise.

The call on whether a player plays is the role of the club doctor and not the coach. The coach does not overrule the doctors.

You need to understand how the medical staff actually operate in an AFL club before making half cocked assessments on nothing more than uninformed hindsight.
