James Frawley a forward?

Recommended Posts

Well, this was raised and dismissed previously but with a new coach and a blank canvas there are no preconceived notions.

This tweet came from James Frawley's twitter-

"Playing forward this year. Prob kick 100!!"

Great idea if Sellar's move to defence is a success. Could free Chip to help up forward!

Then a later tweet-

"Sorry people hacked again by @tom_couch. Wish I could swing forward occasionally though! Ha"

But is it so funny?

one of the most ridiculous things I've heard ...no offence! We have short memories. It wasn't long ago that we were starved of a decent KP defender. Now we finally get a great one and we want to move him forward? Frawley is our best defender by a country mile and moving him forward would be a terrible move. Frawley isn't even noted for his accurate kicking, something that is a must, to be a successful forward, barring a couple of exceptions

he did play alot of his juniour footy as a forward iirc but it would be a massive waste...we bought mitch clark for a reason, we got watts for a reason and we got tommy mc for a reason.

why would u move an AA defender unless there was a massive reason?

We'll have enough trouble fitting all our forwards into the line-up anyway. Frawley is required in the backline.

Up forward we have (off the top of my head, forgive me if I forget someone) Watts, Clark, Petterd, T. McDonald, Howe, Blease, Davey, Jurrah, Dunn, Green.

That's 10 people for 6 spots. Down back we have not as many options, and nobody who could match it with Franklin's, Cloke's, Goodes's as well as Chip. It would be a complete waste to use him as a forward.

The only thing I could imagine us doing is putting Frawley in the middle for a couple of minutes to change things up when we need a bit of physical toughness and strength. I certainly would not be putting him in our forward line any time soon.

I don't think funny is the word.

I reckon there's more pleasure in watching Chippa mark and rebound off the backline, have a few bounces and slot one from 50m+ on the odd occasion.

Maybe if he was no good as a defender... but fortunately for us he's an absolute gun.

Still, I'm not again desperation switches and random five minutes moves to throw the opposition off when nothing else works.

For this to happen Sellar would have to come in and be a better pure defender than Frawley right off the bat, McDonald would have to come in and do what Sellar was earmarked to do (whatver you believe that to be) right off the bat, and Neeld would have to be hit in the head - right off the middle of the bat.

Not going to happen.

(Although Freak's post did unsettle me...)

I was one who suggested it last year, but with Clark's arrival it shouldn't be required. It's borne of the idea that Frawley's skills are wasted in a primary defensive lock-down role.

Never say never.

Best ever CHB one David Neitz to FF

Who would have thought?

he was only moved forward because there were so few other options...good time grimes stated 10players for 6spots and that was without jetta, fitzpatrick or sylvia...if all of the above fail then why not throw him forward the season would already be in the shitter

This is where your logic is flawed in the other thread too. Sellar doesn't have to be a better lock-down defender than Frawley, he doesn't even have to be as good - it's highly uinlikely that he will be. He just has to be adequate. The attacking benefits that Frawley delivers when freed of this limiting role outweigh any loss of lock-down - that's the crux or the argument. If someone really starts to get away from Sellar and the balance of benefits swings then Frawley and Sellar can switch because by definition Frawley is on a less dangerous opponent. BTW I'm not arguing that Frawley play forward here.

Bob's example of the 2008 GF was a very good one Scarlett limited Franklin but Hawthorn still won.

What about the 13 forwards we already have?(not even counting the rookies)

If you read my post earlier in the thread I said that with the arrival of Clark, any merits of a move forward for Frawley are seriously diminished. I was ctually referring to a discussion in another thread (16th March training - http://demonland.com...post__p__518129) where I suggested Sellar could free Frawley to play an attacking role in defence. The key point is that Frawley is wasted as a lock-down defender.

Love the idea of Frawley having the occasional run on the ball to break up a game.

There was a thread on it last year, but i think E25 was opposed to it got a few of his alias's to shout down anyone that disagreed with him and ruined it.

right you are, at this point i would like to withdraw my accusation and replace it with an agreement that if sellar can take the FF then frawley would make a brilliant rebounding defender and furthermore i hope to see this unfold. frawley has the pace and the ability to play this role brilliantly the only thing missing from the equation is sellar being good enough. fingers crossed he is

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
