Then there's Viney next year, and he will be an instant start, so a mid better step up or GTFO and make way for that little berserker.

Going to love not seeing us getting pushed around and bullied so much on the field anymore. Go Dees

Bartram (runs hard and is tough) Frawley (tough and hard at the ball) Garland (hard at the ball and contests all the time)

MacDonald (tough and hard at the ball) Sellar (big body and hopefully will contest hard) Tapscott (strong and hard at the ball)

Grimes (brave as hell and attacks the ball) Moloney (big body and attacks the ball) Bail ( runs hard and attacks the ball)

Sylvia (tough and hard when fit) Clark (big strong and aggressive) Trengove (fearless and attacks the ball)

Howe (getting fitter, stronger and attacks the ball) Martin (big and strong and jumps and runs hard) Jetta (works hard and attacks the ball)

Jamar (big body and jumps hard) McKenzie (tackles hard and attacks the ball) Jones (strong and relentless at the ball)

Bate ( stronger and fitter and attacks the ball) T Mcdonald (real big and strong and attacks everything) Nicholson (runs hard and getting stronger) Taggert (will be strong and will attack the ball)

Its all about strong bodies and work rate

I like your thinking but where's Watts, I think we saw this season how hard he was starting to run. Teams that run and work hard will find the ball easily enough and just maybe Davey can get back to breaking lines and give us the quality delivery he has. It's not about the best 22 it will be about picking the 22 for beating the opposition, we need 28-32 players who can just fit into a role should someone get suspended or injured, that is the Pies strength and hopefully will become ours

My 2 cents:

B: Grimes, Frawley, Garland

HB: Bail, Martin, Rivers

C: Jones, Moloney, Sylvia

HF: Howe, Watts, Petterd

F: Jurrah, Clark, Green

FOL: Jamar, Trengove, Gysberts

INT (from): McKenzie, Tapscott, Blease, Bate, Morton, Jetta, Bennell

I reckon out 22 will be defined by

1. opposition

2. kg in the midfield (bigger bodies welcome)

3. strength, speed and footskills along the flanks

4. height and strength down the spine with the CHB and CHF being especially fleet of foot.

5. creativity in the pockets

I know I'm not really saying much more than observing whats happening, but I'm liking what I see.

My best 22 - (at this stage)is:-

Bartram Frawley Rivers

Grimes MacDonald Nicholson

Garland Maloney Watts

Sylvia Sellar Howe

Jurrah Clark Green

Jamar Trengove Jones

McKenzie Martin Bail Davey

I've never done one of these before, so here goes:

B Bartram Frawley Garland

HB Tapscott T. McDonald Blease

C Bail Moloney Jones

HF Sylvia Watts Howe

FF Green Clarke Jurrah

Fol Jamar Grimes Trengove

Int Davey, Martin, Mckenzie Petterd (Sub)

Unlucky - RIvers, Gysberts, Morton, Bate, Nicholson

The only thing I think is missing here is a quality crumber in the forward line (will Davey ever get back to the form and the position that made him so exciting?)

Rivers is the interesting one...I think/hope Tom McDonald will take his spot and make CHB his own, but they could be easily interchanged at this point. As for Sellar, how anyone can suggest a 1st round draft pick who has been delisted after 21 games is a walk up start is beyond me. Reminds me of Paul Johnson mark II.

Anyway, that's my first and only attempt at one of these.

Here is mine... although, I'm sure I would have missed someone:

B: Bail - Frawley - Garland

HB: Tapscott - Rivers - Blease

C: Sylvia - Trengove - Gysberts

HF: Howe - Watts - Jurrah

F: Green - Clark - Davey

R: Jamar - Moloney - McKenzie

Int: Martin - Grimes - Jones

Sub: Petterd

I will reserve judgement on a 'rejuvenated' Bate, Morton, and Sellar until I see them in a game... although they could all slip into my best 22.

I liked what I saw in WATTS last year, but I have been to training a few times this year and he seems to be struggling. I don't know whether he is dealing with the pressure of having to earn his spot.

It's November ffs. Struggling at training in November does not equal missing a spot in the side. There's absolutely no way on Earth that Watts will not be in our best side this year - especially when you've got Petterd in your side. I like Ricky but the suggestion that he's better than Watts is laughable.

BARTRAM FRAWLEY GARLAND

GRIMES MARTIN RIVERS

BAIL MOLONEY DAVEY

PETTERD WATTS HOWE

JURRAH CLARK GREEN

JAMAR JONES TRENGOVE

MORTON SYLVIA TAPSCOTT McKENZIE

Emergency from: Nicholson Bennell Blease T McDonald Gawn Bate Gysberts Dunne Strauss J McDonald

This is based on the best players from 2012. Including Sellar would be purely speculative at this stage. He may well fill the CHB post but does look a bit s;low from the video footage. Martin has the speed, height and his kicking, decision making and general disposal have improved out of sight.

While looking at the above line-up, with injuries etc. there are some other players who you would expect to also get some game-time this year. They are: Fitzpatrick, Jetta, Evans, Spencer (I don't think his story is over yet), Davis, Cook, Lawrence.

There are not too many players now on our list that won't deserve a game in the next two years. That's a pretty good situation for us. We don't have too many "Grgic" types any more. People may dislike Dunne, but he gave us a great year in 2010. Bate looks to be working very hard at turning things around. The whole picture looks rosy. GO DEES!

Obviously it depends on who we're playing, but my best 22 would be:

FB: Bartram Frawley Tapscott

HB: Rivers Garland Grimes

C: Blease Moloney Gysberts

HF: Martin Watts Howe

FF: Green Clark Jurrah

Foll: Jamar Sylvia Jones

Int: Trengove McKenzie Bail Nicholson (Sub)

Emerg/Reserves: Davey MacDonald Bate Gawn Evans Morton Bennell Jetta T. MacDonald Dunn Strauss

Edit: I did this off the top of my head, so please forgive if anyone notable is missing.

It's a bit embarrassing leaving out :- Watts, Nicholson, Joel McDonald, Rivers, Gysberts,Jetta, Martin, Dunn, Bennell. oops almost forgot MORTON

What further embarrassments will occur in 2013 when Jack Viney walks in?

That could be a good topic for the mid year. WHO goes to allow for Jack and the 2 compensation picks?

I'm getting excited already bring on 2012

Hi all my fellow demon lovers i have just found this site im a long time redlegs member and am really happy i found this site i will put my best 22 up soon. I can not understand that anyone could leave the best future prospect in jack watts out of our best 22 he has great skills and just started to shine in 2011 he will be a GUN of the AFL next year seen a good pic from pre season training of jack and he is starting to look like the hulk he is not much smaller than jamar the pics are on the MFC website. Anyway GO DEES and jack watts will become the man in 2012.

All I can say is:

I am so glad we are having this problem right now.

The fact that some people are putting their best 22 down and miss/forget one or some of - Watts, Blease, Green, Davey, Moloney, Bartram, Jurrah, Bate, Bennell, Tapscott, Martin is a good thing.

I remember the times when I would put together a best 22 and be cringing that I would have to include certain players.

The debate that we are all having displays the depth/potential of our list.

Pumped for the season ahead!

I'm not going to bother putting my 22 in basically because it causes me too many headaches.

Can we please stop infering how fortunate enough we are to have 'good depth'? The internet is visibly cringing.

Indeed - having 8 players who are almost good enough to make our middle of the road side isn't exactly a premiership recipe.

Of the players who are in our much lauded "depth" (Macdonald, Bate, Dunn et al), approximately zero of them will be there when our side is good enough to challenge a flag.

Yes, and I hardly see the positives in having your 12th best player so close in ability to your 30th...

That doesn't scream to me "competition for places," it screams "we only have 11 good players."

LOL - I've seen people claim we have good depth, that Sellar is already in our best 22, that Bate is also best 22, and that Petterd is better than Watts.

Welcome back, TU.

B: Tapscott, Frawley, Garland

HB: Rivers, Martin, Grimes

HF: Green, Sellar, Sylvia

F: Howe, Clark, Jurrah

FOLL: Jamar, Bate, Jones

INTR: Davey, Petterd, Nicholson, Blease

I know ppl will be saying why Bate. i believe we will see a new Matty Bate. Neeld rates this guy and with some good coaches Bater will rise.

Thank God that you're not the coach!

how can anyone leave out jordie mckenzie?? love that kid, he's the hardest worker in the team and 9 times out of 10 he's at the bottom of the pack. this is all while he's still scrawny and proves its the size of the dog in the fight that matters most. look forward to watching him go 100miles an hour at every contest for the next decade

totally agree

he came 9th in the B+F and also got the coaches award and heart and soul player award for his troubles

at 21 years and 37 games he will be out there every week getting pummeled for years to come just like Junior was

some people just don't have a clue

This is a new coach and a new coaching group. Past reputations mean nothing. Based on training reports from the fans, and media interviews by MN, It is possible that Bate could be selected before Watts in our best 22 atm.

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
