Green on captaincy (2011)

15 vote on Brownlow night is pretty good in an ordinary year????

How many of these 15 were from games against Adelaide, Fremantle, Gold Coast and Port. How many votes did he get when the team needed him to step up and lead our young midfield against the mature midfields of the competition. He played great against the weaker clubs but as mentioned like most of our team went missing when the pressure was on.

Tingay02,

Imagine how I feel voting for Rivers as Captain back then. Actually feel ok given his 2nd in the B&F......Talk about going against the grain here. :P

I don't think you speak for everyone by saying "now we all think Beamer is the man."

Regardless of where he finished in the B&F, Rivers is not a Captains [censored]. His body language when things aren't going well is terrible, and if he were the captain, this negativity would spread throughout the team. The fact he was in the leadrship group this year should see him demoted from any future leadership groups. I'd imagine that Neeld would've noticed first hand how Rivers handled himself on-field in that Collingwood match.

I think you will find that he polled votes in games where we were beaten as well as the weaker sides

Love to say he did but the he didn't poll 1 vote in any games we lost, but we lost so badly not many players did. 16 of his votes came from games against Brisbane, Gold Coast, Richmond, Adelaide and Port, with the other 2 against Sydney. As i've mentioned he plaed well when the side played well.

I want to see who leads during this preseason before ANY decisions are made. Our LG of 2011 was non existant compared to other teams. March is still a long way orf.

This is where it will be very interesting WYL. From all reports, Jones is a fantastic trainer, and quite a leader on teh track and behind the scenes at the Club. He could bloody well be the smoky you know. But, there will be many coming from the hills in fits of rage should he get the gig. I for one wouldn't be upset if he led us next year - might get him to that next level that we need him to get to.

Exactly. I want a captain chosen by deeds and attitude & not by a ballot box.

So who is in the leadership group then next year???

This year it was Green©, Davey, Moloney, Rivers, Jones and Grimes (Was there one more?)

I think that next year it should be: Moloney ©, Green (VC), Jones, Grimes, Jamar, Trengove.

Davey needs to concentrate on having a good season, rather than on leadership. Rivers isn't much chop. Grimes is a better backline leader.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Nathan Jones will one day be the captain of the Melbourne Football Club. He has everything you look for in a captain: a great work ethic, plays every game, he's a consistent performer, loves the club and he's a great role model for the younger players. I have no idea why MFC supporters constantly criticize him. I think he is going to thrive under Neeld and become one of our best players.

That's quite a wrap you've given him. I'm up there with his biggest supporters and could certainly understand the reasoning behind making him captain, but I don't have quite as much faith in him as all that.

I am a big fan but I dont think he has a couple of the qualities I set out above.

I admire that he has improved year on year and puts in for the club. I bet Neeld likes him already.

Happy to be proven wrong but can he commnuicate the coaches message on the field and be an inspiration?

It's a bit hard to say who should be captain when really, we have no idea what goes on behind close doors.

A good captain needs to lead on and off the field, and as irrelevant as some may think, they need to be able to handle the media. The perception of our club is something I believe is important, and that starts with the coach and the captain.

Personally I'd like to see Jamar given the job. Seems to tick most of the right boxes, and guys like Trengove, Frawley and Grimes are just a tad too young/inexperienced.

Unless he suddenly discovers his inner extrovert, I doubt very much that the Jones boy will be appointed Captain anytime soon. He should definitely be in the leadership group as he does set a great example when it comes to work ethic and improvement, but unfortunately, he is far too reserved to be a Captain (a position I believe needs to be filled by someone who can be a little intimidating when necessary - Moloney is a perfect example). I think though that he would make an excellent Vice Captain to Moloney's Captain.

I think completely in the reverse to you on Jones.

He is very vocal and extroverted.

His other intangibles have queries but extroversion and involvement are very high.

Well, you probably get to see him a lot more than I do, but on the few occasions I have had the pleasure, he has always been very very quiet. But I do think a pairing of he and Moloney would be perfect for the club.

I've certainly heard more Jones interviews that I have Moloney interviews. It's either because he keeps stepping in to do them OR someone, somewhere think he's a decent interviewee.

With jonesy I love the little fella.

But please don't talk about captaincy at this stage.

He hasn't even been tried in the leadership group yet.

Small steps boys.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
