Draft Questions???

Live on fox sports from 7pm Thursday.

If we want Couch on the senior list, we have to take him in the draft. We won't be participating in the PSD this year as you must take 3 picks in the national draft, and we have 3 spots left on our list if I recall correctly.

If we wanted Couch, it wouldn't make sense to wait to the PSD anyway.

He will either be on the senior list after this Thursday (doubt it), a rookie, or bust.

I hope they don't reverse the Top10 order of the draft again to 'add suspense.'

What a joke

Such a stupid idea. Most people interested enough to watch the coverage would be interested enough to know the top 5 prospects and what order they are most likely to be picked at. TV coverage has been so bad over the past few years. I'll be happy to listen to radio coverage again.

Each team is required to make 3 deletions to the senior team list each year. However, I believe there is only a minimum requirement of 1 selection in the national draft as rookie upgrades can be included as a "selection." For example, if we had decided to upgrade Nicholson to the senior list (which I was a little suprised we didn't) then we would only have to use picks 36 and 52 as live picks with 54 allocated to upgrading Nicholson. Conversely, we could use picks 36 and 52, then pass on 54 to utilise a PSD selection although I fail to see any advantage in this.... unless we have come to an arangement with a pre-listed afl player that hasn't nominated for the national draft.

I agree that Couch would most likely be a rookie selection if it all.

Nah, clubs must take a minimum of three players in the draft, inclusive of rookie upgrades and you were right, father son picks are included in the 3.

We wont be participating in the PSD this year. Our 3 spots will be filled in the national draft.

The paper today said we have picks 36, 52,54,72, 90, with picks 72 and 90 could we use them on couch or are the for rookie elevations?

The paper got it wrong.

We have three picks - 36, 52 and 54.

Assuming Couch has nominated for this week's draft, we can select him on Thursday night or (if he isn't selected) wait until the rookie draft and pick him then if that's what they want.

The article Redleg's referring to is entitled "Media lock-in before draft" but it isn't available on the web but it says that the first round selections 1 to 26 will be made behind closed doors.

Andrew Demetriou will then count down the selections from 10 to 1 for the television coverage. Selections 11 to 26 will then be "ripped through quickly" and then the live coverage will commence at # 27.

At least from a timing point of view, things should move pretty crisply.

I suspect the AFL hasn't cottoned on to the fact that, outside of the four GWS supporters, no one gives a toss about the top 10 (aside from what could've been had the draft not been compromised)

Probably been gone over in other threads, but if we wanted to use one of our compensation picks this year (which we obviously won't anyway), would we have to have already flagged our intent to use it, or can we make that decision live during the draft based on available players etc.

can't be activated till next year

can only be traded this year and trade period is now over

It needs to be decided ahead of time. I think the cut off was 2-3 weeks ago.

Oh? I was of the understanding that clubs had to nominate at the start of the season.

So that means we can choose to trade them and if we don't trade we can then decide if we would like to use them?

Indeed you are correct, I was mistaken. It was reported that GC only had one pick at 24 but I failed to realise that they have commited to upgrading several rookies already. Hence my confusion about how many picks must be taken in the draft.

My understanding is that you can nominate to use your compensation pick in the year you acquire them but have to nominate by a certain date. Additionally, if a club chooses to use a compensatory pick in the same year, they will become an "end-of-round" pick. So if we decided to use say the mid-round pick, instead of getting pick 10 we would receive pick 19. Of course the extra selections allocated to GWS skews these numbers but you get the idea.

Otherwise if the selections are "stocked" for use in subsequent years then they must be nominated before the start of the season (unsure on specific date) in which a club wishes to use them.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
