Any of "Diamond" Jim Tilbrooks Kicks....They went a long way...but not in a direction he could control!!!

Don't agree with that one.

I always thought his kicking was the best part of him.

DJ's biggest problem was the rest of the team resented how much he was paid compared to them.

They simply ignored him on the field most of the time.

I remember a game at Vic Park where he was constantly free on the Half forward line and calling for the ball

The other players simply kicked it everywhere but to him.

I was at a game at the Western Oval when he kicked it from the centre of the ground and it went through for a score. A point, unfortunately, but still the biggest kick I've ever seen live.

Yes, but the coin was unheard of in those days....I remember seeing all those zero's on the back page of the SUN & just going WOW!! That is a lifetime wage.

Holland lining up for goal was a head-in-your-hands moment, even (especially?) when he was at the top of the goal square.

I don't remember him ever taking a real kick but I'm sure he missed from the square or close to it in that last game at Optus Oval.

On the flip side;

1964 second last H&A round. Melbourne vs Hawthorn. Hassa Mann kicks a freakish goal in the dying moment to win the game for Melbourne. A week later, at the end of the H&A season, Melbourne finished top, and Hawthorn finished 5th (missed the final 4). If Hassa Mann's kick had missed, Melbourne would have finished 5th, missing the finals and Hawthorn would have finished on top.

Recently I have spent a bit of time researching results trying to find which game that was and was tearing my hair out trying to find it..I think I got off on the wrong foot thinking it was the final match of the season and that's why I couldn't find it..

From memory, Hassa was awarded a very questionable mark by an umpire who was unsighted behind him..and I think the ball may actually have touched the ground as he was diving and grabbed it? Think he was on the HFFlank Punt Road end, Members side(Western Stand). Is that how you remember it too Bush Demon and DavidNeitz9?

Shows you how remarkable the ladder was that year when as you say one kick meant the difference between fifth and a Flag for us and Hawthorn finishing 5th instead of first.

I still have happy childhood memories of later that year (or close to?) of spotting Hassa standing outside the chemist shop in Sorrento eating an ice cream! Made my day! In those days it was unusual for a kid like me to ever see a MFC football hero in "real life" as opposed to on the turf on game day or on Saturday night replay with Butch Gale and Mike Williamson before Pelaco Inquest!

I dont think we would have got close to Carlton in 1987 after the PF punch out with Hawthorn.

Northey would have fumed over an Irishman crossing over the mark.

I've always wondered about this and have to agree that Carlton would have flogged us in 1987, but would making the 1987 GF have held is in better stead in 1988? We were demolished by the Hawks but many of our players were young and inexperienced to the GF week experience whereas the Hawks were old pro's. Making the 1987 GF may have taken some of the edge off the 1988 GF (assuming we made it again).

Fortunately, soon after, an even worse field kick from Brian Dixon fell into the arms of Neil.....and we drift off topic again.

I think exactly what you think.Its funny because I watched the replay of that last year on foxtel, I was 5 when the match happened and all I remember from that day was my dad and uncle leaving for the game, and my dad and uncle coming home from the game, then again Neitz should never have taken that mark, a simple shepard on the line and it would've been Schwartz's goal and anything could of happened from there. And just like you WYL i never want to watch that again, EVER!
