Neil Craig

A friend of a friend is an old vfl footballer, who played with hawks but is a mad demons fan, has alot of contacts still with melbourne, was talking about Neil Craig already agreeing to terms with Melbourne and he was saying "its looking good now we have got Craig". Didn't go into too much about it and everytime I ask him who he knows, he just winks and says footballers know footballers

Normally I would just blow this off, but he told me about Neeld 4 days before it came out in the press.

Don't bite my head off, just passng on a msg... I know its a friend of a friend but I thought I would share anyway.. Take it if you wish

Carlton - having decided to keep coach Brett Ratten - is preparing to outbid every AFL rival on signing Craig as a "senior assistant" or "coaching director".

What I find funny is the possibility that Carlton thought they had trumped us by securing our fitness guy Hocking, but we scored Misson and it would seem they set their sights too low. Maybe out smarted themselves?

I think the club is showing it appreciates sometimes you have to open teh purse strings a bit , but at the same time be aware of relative values. Thats right isnt it Tom

If we get him and thats the want of the club then all well and good, if not. No harm no foul .

Id be curious to know whether the idea of working with possibly one of the leagues best fitness gurus would be an enticement or a hindrance for Neil ?

Yes many people tend to jump on what a mate said sometimes with good reason but I think it great to post this sort of stuff if your fairly certain of your sources. So thanks for that DT.

If Misson is the Numero uno Fitness guy, then this can only help entice more people to WANT to be at the MFC. I hope it will be seen as brilliant timing with Free Agency rules upon us within 12 months..

Those poor Aints...How did they let Luke Ball go for nothing....

Well, WYL thats pretty much how I would see it. Strangely enough not everyone sees things my way

Hence the question. As I understand it we were into getting Craig prior to the availability of Misson.. So I was just wondering whether that becomes a plus or minus.

In a way hopefully Craig could see it as an opportunity to help be there at the set up of the leagues premier health and fitness facility.

Time will tell BB...I trust the board decision on this one...If Craig has a defined role & is an assett i am all for it...but if it just causes inner friction it aint worth it...

Is Craig happy to leave "coaching" Behind? Wouldn't be easy.

Well, maybe it wouldnt be as hard as we might think. His background and first interest outside of the actual playing of footy was Sports Science. Its been his hallmark really. Should he join Melbourne he gets to be part of something special, the day to day pressure of being the "Coach" might seem a happy memory of old.

Who knows.

Getting Neil Craig would be fantastic on 2 fronts. The first is his undeniable sports science background. Working with Misson will only benefit our club (as any fanatical fitness freak or diehard weight lifter can attest to, the more experience and knowledge at your disposal, the better the results of the hard work you put in).

The second is the experience he has gained as being coach of the AFC. He experienced high's and low's throughout, and the lessons gained would be invaluable to a new head coach like Neeld. Plus having an AFL hardened coach assisting you would ease certain pressures.

From what it seems on the outside, Craig is an extremely professional person and doesn't look like one who would go into a footy club and tear it limb from limb because of his ego (unlike some at the MFC). Though, that's what many thought of Ross Lyon.

Good Points...i am being swayed towards Craig now...i have always liked him in Press Conferences, if he really wants to be at the MFC Bring it on

I've wondered many a time what would Neil be doing? If Misson is so elite what could Neil possibly offer over and above? I think it would be twofold. Firstly, the Anderson report may have advised that this is the recommended structure. Secondly, and most importantly to me, would be that the new coach, elite Misson man and Neil Craig would change the numbers of the old gaurd V new and bring about a new dynamic at the club. Neeld on his own may not have been enough to effect the required change but with more top level people (not including new assistant coaches in this) there would be a significant shift in balance. Just my two bobs worth ;-)

let other clubs pay over the odds for him...

get Laidley instead, and use the left over cash to get Sumich as forward coach in the event he misses out on the Saints job... Surely he would realise that coaching at another club, one that is likely to be successful in the future, would only help his chances of getting a senior job...

Absolutley no way, Sumich is an absolute dud, might have been able to play the game but in regards to knowledge and tactics the guy has NFI he was laughable at South Fremantle as coach in 98/99 had access to Freo's AFL listed players along with probably the best WAFL list and was outcoached on numerous occassions, got the 99 side to GF where they were raging favourites and got shown up for the dud he is on the day

Left Field but he flew out of Adelaide this morning to Melbourne.

Would they make such an announcement at the Bluey?

I have assumed our silence over the past couple of days was not to distract from the event tonight and maybe some of our targets are still with teams in the final 4.

Time will tell.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
