Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Pick 12

Okay by my calculations, our first pick will be pick 12 in the next draft.

We will definitely not use the scully picks until next years draft as that is meant to be far superior.

Gold Coast - pick 4

Port - Pick 6

Brisbane - pick 8

Adelaide - pick 10

Melbourne - pick 12

on a side note, i'm running my first marathon on the 9th October and am running for the Cancer Council, seeking kind-hearted people (or loaded people!) to chip in something for the foundation. My link. I've been a long-term poster on this site and whilst a lot of people have disagreed with my football ideas and opinions, i hope to put that aside and do something good. Sounds a bit like debt-demolition!

we should use scully compo picks now.drafts being better than others is crap. its how you develop players. get the kids in now so they're closer in age to trenners, watts and co. rather than wait another year or two. need a core group similar age. we also need to be aggressive at the trade table because most of our cusp players are contracted until end of next yr.

Drafts being better than others is not crap. Look at the 2001 draft.

Compared to the 2003 draft. 1. Cooney, 2. Walker, 3. Syvlia...... 50 odd Sam Fisher. That's about all that is left from that debacle.

Sam Fisher Stk pick 55.

Heath Shaw pick 48

Michael Rischitelli pick 61

all from 03 draft. Top end wasn't as good, but you don't know its a poor draft until it's 5 years down the track.

Heath Shaw was a father/son, picked before they introduced the rule to actually make the father/son rule fair. There's no way Collingwood would've gotten away with picking him at 48 under the current rules.

WOW.

Three players slipped through to late in the draft (2, as Nasher clarified).

Have a look how many slipped through in 2001.

Or how many were still chosen early.

Why do teams sometimes draft 5 players, but only one turns out to be good?

Because they only develop that one player??

Development plays a part, but you'd be a fool to ignore the impact of the inherent talent within a player.

As Viney said today, quoting Barass, "I don't care about what talent you possess, it's how you use that talent that will impress me." (paraphrasing)

Well, without possessing that talent in the first place it is impossible to use it.

To early for trades. We've still got plenty of kids to develop. We'll trade when we know what we want.

Hmmm pick 12 eh.

Suppose we'll draft either a tall skinny forward who can't kick or a pint sized midfielder who can't handball. But they'll be elite if we just give them 5 years or so to develop, after all they'll just be kids and we all need to exercise patience

if you think I'm pizzed off you'd be on the money

Taylor Adams & Devon Smith are 2 other boys from Geelong Falcons that I've heard goood things about without actually having seen them live. Any idea if they're both genuine midfielders or play more around half forward which would be handy.

Tay Adams is more a hard at it mid, run all day type.

About the same height at Scully though.

Probably be similar to Jack Viney in the end.

Dev Smith is pretty short, at about 176cm.

Could play as a HFF, a bit like Nev Jetta I reckon, but nippier.

I'd say Adams is the genuine mid of the 2.

Personally, I'd prefer Sumner. I really liked the look of him, but I reckon he'll go top 10.

The most important thing is to fix what we do have and fix the way the guys play together first. Get that right and we can finish in the 8 regardless of who we pick up. The problem this year wasn't the youth coming through - Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Nicholson, Howe all made a good mark - but the step backwards the leaders made and the mid range players. The likes of Bartram, Dunn, Petterd, Macdonald, Maric were meant to be holding down a spot in the 22 but clearly weren't. Moloney, Jamar, Rivers, Jones all performed well, Sylvia was poor without being horrible but obviously Green and Davey were disgusting.

We need to add midfielders that can break lines. Players that can run and carry and more importantly hit targets. We need outside speed that can find the footy and hit targets.

Sam Docherty & Elliott Kavanagh are 2 players who I reckon suit perfectly and are likely to go around picks 10-15. They're 2 players who would be good fits.

Agree. Although I reckon you've been a little harsh on Petterd & MacDonald. Petterd had a shocking start to the season but I thought he was one of our more consistent players in the 2nd half of the year.

MacDonald was ok to I thought, although I agree he didn't stand up like we probably needed him to.

Lets hope the new coach can get all these issues sorted!

taken from the bigfooty phantom (early run)

16: Jackson Paine (Sandringham Dragons) 194cm, 87 kg.

Interesting tall with a lot going for him. He's got the height you want in a genuine kpp, and while he's not Jon Patton, he's already looking like developing a strong body. Hands good above his head, particularly one-out, is perfectly capable of ripping apart a weaker opponent once he gets on top. While I'm not sure about his raw pace, for such a big bloke he is very balanced and turns quickly - he lays a lot of tackles, and a kpf who can do that is like gold these days in the age of forward presses - too often the talls just lumber around helplessly and don't contribute much. Works hard, lots of 1%ers. He's also a surprisingly good crumber, from his own marking or from other people's. Very good bloke to have isolated one-out in the goalsquare while the rest of the defense stresses about keeping an eye on Watts. For all his size (and he'll be a monster when he fills out) in my book he's a smarts and finesse player rather than relentless runner who blows his opponents up or a pure strength/speed lead-mark-shoot type, and as such I think he and Watts will complement each other well.

The other string to his bow is his ability to play as a 'gorilla' defender. He was just exceptional there against VC in the pre-champs trial match, and I reckon this aspect of his game is really underestimated. With a bit of experience he could be a genuine dual-position kpp swingman, and there aren't all that many of them going around.

This. Except I would label Sylvia as 'inconsistent' rather than poor. Dunn really disappointed me. Looked like he'd come of age in the second half of last season.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
