How do we expect players to give their all and be 100% commited when all you hear from ex Melbourne Greats Gary Lyon I'm only doing the Job until somebody else puts their hand up,I dont know how many times I've heard him say this.

Also Todd Viney I'll coach out the season but I'm not interested after that.

For God's sake some one step up to the plate with some BALLS and say this is what we need and I'm the man to do it.

I don't think we need a thread on this, but I'll give you my answer.

I've got no problem with Todd. He wants his job as development coach to continue and I think this period of senior coach will help him. If he doesn't think he's a senior coach then why stuff around. If Mark Williams, Brian Royal or Scott West were the answer they would have stepped up.

I'm a bit disappointed in Lyon. From a distance it looks like a guy who doesn't work overly hard and who could step in for a medium-long term small amount of work each week. However, we don't know what he does in his personal life and who are we to judge. Working out how the football department and board communicate (ie. football director) is an important job and getting the right person is also important.

Jimmy has stepped up amazingly over the last few years and still isn't going anywhere, Don McLardy seems to be in it long term as well. I really have faith that Schwab has good intentions and wants a premiership as well.

Exactly right. Viney may understand that he may not be the best coach in the land, but for Lyon to say he is only half committed is downright unacceptable. Go hard or go home. Lyon, you are sending out a very mixed message.

Change of heart for Viney

I think basically he wants the best possible coach for the MFC and doesnt want to put himself forward. Deep down he wants it I think. You don't do assistant coaching roles for the fun of it.

It's pretty clear - Garry doesn't want to do the job, but he will temporarily for the sake of the club and his mate Jim.

What exactly are you confused about?

It's not algebra...

Can't see the big deal regarding Lyon.

The guy is being honest, and were Jimmy 100%, Garry wouldn't be needed.

If nothing else, he'll do what he believes to be the best for the MFC.

I wonder if Todd is doing what Schwab may have done using reverse psychology to generate interest in themselves.

Make something unavailable and everyone wants it. Its the oldest trick in the book

Warrior code?

Who do you think you are, Jake the Muss?

Selecting a coach requires a clear head, clever planning and informed decisions.

Not inspiring men to run through brick walls.

For "god's sake", If you're going to call out a former champion and captain - at least spell his name correctly.

In any case, you should lay off him. He is doing his bit to help a mate.

But, most of all he is doing his bit for the club.

Clearly he doesn't want the job - that's life.

However, until someone else is able to stand up, he's the best we've got.

The same applies for Todd.

And as one other poster said: Todd wants the best for the club. If we do manage to catch one of the big fish, he will support that. If circumstances create a position where he is able to apply for the job, well, as he said, he'll review things at the end of the year.

To me, that's putting the good of the club ahead the individual.

What's wrong with that ?

Quite possible.

And that's the correct way to do it.

It avoids a confrontation should we get someone like MM or Ross Lyon.

He is putting the club, ahead of his own ambitions.

Aren't we therefore fortunate to have him on board??

What a disaster for the club that people who don't feel they are ideal for certain roles are seeking instead to contribute in other ways.

Continue with your Messiah-search, if you must.

Viney is putting the club before himself. He is interested in the role and will, in my opinion, be coach should either Malthouse or Ross Lyon not accept the position. Should that happen, I think he will be a very good coach, with his experience as an assistant over the last 10 years or so at successful clubs with good coaches. I would think should that happen, the club will attempt to appoint an experienced senior assistant, with probably Neil Craig an ideal choice if he hasn't already accepted a position under Voss at the Lions, as speculated - especially seeing they worked together at the Crows. I, for one, would be very happy if that happened, however, my gut feel still says that one of Malthouse or Ross Lyon will accept the position. .

Spot On...GET OFF G.LYON'S CASE for Gods sake, he is being the voice of Jimmy because Jimmy is gravely ill.

Good on you Garry i say.

What, the players weren't giving their all today and weren't 100% commited ?

Were you watching ?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
