Did they? Fair enough I thought it was one after their first round pick and one at the end of first round. I'll defer to your better judgment though.

Here's a source:

Geelong Cats - Round One selection.

The selection for Gary Ablett may be activated by the Geelong Cats after its round one selection in any one of the 2012, 2013 or 2014 NAB AFL Draft Selection Meetings. The selection will be immediately placed behind the Round One selection of the Geelong Cats in that particular season. (Ie, should the Cats earn the right for selection 12, the compensation selection would be number 13, if the Cats earn the right for selection four, the compensation selection would be number five etc.).

Should the Geelong Cats wish to activate the selection in either the 2010 or 2011 NAB AFL Draft, during the two expansion-period Drafts, the selection would be placed at the end of Round One.

Geelong Cats – Mid-Round One selection.

The selection for Gary Ablett may be activated by the Geelong Cats at the middle of round one, after the round one selections for those clubs that have missed qualification for the finals in that year and before the round one selections of those clubs that have qualified for the finals in that year, in any one of the 2012, 2013 or 2014 NAB AFL Draft Selection Meetings.

Should the Geelong Cats wish to activate the selection in either the 2010 or 2011 NAB AFL Draft, during the two expansion-period Drafts, the selection would be placed at the end of Round One.

That point about the 2010 and 2011 drafts causes some confusion I think

I'm amazed at how anyone could be so sure that 'he should have been there'. Obviously you have more facts available than I do, eg. how many metres between the cool room and the room where TS was being treated? Was it possible to interrupt the treatment underway and get there in time? Would the docs know when the siren was going to sound to get him off the table on on the way to the cool room in time? I'd want top know all that before I even thought of saying 'should have been there'. And as for taking the next step to draw conclusions about implications for contract signing - just amazed anyone would do it.

Sorry to rattle your cage sue! But it's a fair question and yes i prob know more than you!

I am just amazed that you are so defensive ... The question is valid and the argument of the said impacts are valid. Chief football writers write it, experts and commentators comment on it ... But on a forum we can't discuss it ... Amazing!

Glad to hear you know more than me. I presume you mean in general and not about the specific points I raised or you might have answered them.

Why do you keep going on about"'we can't discuss it"? What do you think all your posts and responses are then?

Yes, the question was legitimate and was answered to my satisfaction (if not yours) by the facts stated. Give it a rest.

Tom was off the ground for the entire last quarter. How long does it take the doc to get the ice and bandages on, pull out the crutches and make a note to see the specialist on Monday morning? How long does it take to make the walk to the cool room to celebrate with his team mates?

Here's a novel idea: we should tank.

Say we lose Scully and get one first round pick, with that pick slated to come after our normal pick.

We use the pick in 2012.

We tank and come last and we get picks 1 & 2 in 2012.

-----------

Say we lose Scully and get two first round picks, with those two picks slated to come after our normal pick.

We use the first pick in 2012 and the second in 2013.

We tank and come last in both years we get picks 1 & 2 in both 2012 and 2013.

-----------

Having said that, can I just say (or rather, ask) this: how would the two picks be allocated? How did it work for Geelong & Ablett? I assume one pick came straight after Geelong's regulation pick. When is their other pick scheduled to kick in?

Hahahaha good luck tanking our way below Port! They are on 2 wins lol

I would rather they take longer than required than to rush it

Also as said they sang the song in the cool room maybe he was waiting in the change rooms in anticipation???? then had no chance to get there in time maybe he is disappointed he couldnt sing it

Really stop over analyzing the kid

I think the question is valid and one i asked at the time ... Where was he??? No it doesnt mean he is going to GWS but fridge or no fridge he should have been there!

With potentially this sort of individual attitude and questions over his knee (long bow) ... I wonder if he is worth the $, energy and team morale that is being impacted!

Nice avatar Robert ...

Not this year, Mort. 2012 & 2013. I plan ahead.

Isn't that what GC are planning, if they win under 5 this year and next they get the priority pick before the first round plus finish last or second last (depending on GWS but but if you win under five you would assume the bottom two) I think they may have a pick after their first round as well so in real terms they could have 1,2,3 or 1,3,4

Agreed! It must be a long way to walk ...

To be quite honest, I've just about had enough of the entire episode. It's the ugly side of footy.

I certainly hope that Tom stays with the MFC, but the way that this is playing out, which ever way he jumps his reputation will have taken a hit.

From that side of things, I think he has been poorly advised. By choosing to enter into this mexican standoff he is now damned if he leaves, and to many MFC supporters probably slightly damned if he stays.

Should he leave, MFC supporters will never forgive him and the football public will remember him as a kid who sold out for the big bucks, and if he stays Melbourne supporters will probably always remember the way he treated the club and supporters in just his second season of league football.

I will be very disappointed if Cameron Schwab and Dean Bailey's defence of his character has been for nothing.

And as for waiting to see who is coaching, I'd tell Tom to suck it up. Since when does a kid entering his third year get a say about coaching appointments?

Tom Harley was pretty smug about Scully going to GWS next year on Game Day this morning. I don't know what he has to do with GWS, but when asked about it he just said "oh, we've signed him already have we" with a dumb grin on his face.

Good post.

On your last point, it seems pretty clear the "coaching" issue is a ruse, much like the CBA was previously. No one could seriously prefer to go and be coached by two past-it lunatics who while successful in their day are both past it and the modern game has past them by. Sheedy is obviously in the role only for his "marketability". What sort of development is Scully going to get with the coaches main focus on getting the club in the papers each week and being the centre focus of a team of kids younger than him? IF he takes the money and runs I think he will have been badly advised as well as I don't think he could seriously see this as a good move for his career and in all likelihood his career development will take a massive hit.

Starting to look like the same window dressing Judd went through when joining Carlton when he visited with Melbourne and Essendon prior to making his decision which was already made half way through his last season with West Coast.

Initially with Scully it was lets wait until the CBA is sorted so we can work out what figures we are dealing with, now its lets wait and see who is coach at Melbourne. Despite this Blucher told 6PR that we can expect Tom to make a decision within a week of the conclusion of Melbourne's season. Can we expect the coaching situation and CBA to be sorted within a week of our season finale???

Does this all seem a little flimsy???

In the previous thread I mentioned that I believe his management wants him to go but I feel that he would like to stay, but something that I've noticed about his management which I didn't mention earlier is that they have completely changed tack on the reasons why they want him to wait till the end of the year before he considers his options.

At the start of the year they specifically stated that they wanted him to wait untill they get more of an idea of where he is at ie at the start of the year he was a no.1 pick who had a good first year, but they wanted to wait till the end of the year to find out how good he'd be so they could get the best deal. They also stated that they wanted to find out the result of the negotiations between the AFL and the players union.

In a recent interview with his manger that was linked in the previous thread, he specifically said that it would not be fair to expect Scully to make a decision between the MFC and GWS right now during the season. He repeatedly said 'he can't do that inbetween training sessions' meaning that TS doesn't have the time now to check out their training facilities etc. He made no mention of the previous reasons stated for holding off on talks, just that they were still going to do it that way.

I think it's pretty clear they want him to go

Always has done. Lets wait for the next exciting offering from Blucher. Keep inmind his backgorund, i.e a heavy does of sports journalism so he's wel placed to construct a 'story' or two

The reason for the flimsiness is what is concerning me...comes down to either his management are trying to squeeze every last cent out of the MFC or that its smokes and mirrors because he is goneski.

Enough's enough - just go and we can all get some sleep.

It's only footy.

Sleeping fine mate, just dont like the manner in which this is playing out, regardless of the decision at the end, plenty of supporters will be left with a sour taste in their mouths.

there will be absolutely no sour grapes if he stays.

It will be dead set forgotten about by round 1 next year.

Just something that will come up every now and again someone else hasn't signed.

And we'll all go 'oh remember when scully didn't sign?'

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
