Scully and his mates

Recommended Posts

Firstly, if you hate Scully threads.... then find another one... I want to discuss this topic

One thing that has been on my mind is Tom Scully and his friends at the club.

I follow alot of the players twitter accounts and they are regularly talking with each other and posting status's about hanging out with each other etc.

One thing I have noticed is Tom's name never comes up in these status, they never say he is with them when they do things together. It seems that watts, trenners, tap and morton all go for dinner together, wouldn't scully normally be in that group? He is never mentioned on Blease's account either, who I thought was his best mate?

Do you think its true that the senior players don't want anything to do with him until he commits? That attitude would be pushed onto our younger group too.. If Tom's decision has not been made yet, this would not be helping..

Its childish if true...

Anyone know anything about this?

Didn't know much about this but it is a little disturbing. Is he a bit of an introvert or loner maybe?

He's what you call a football nerd. He probably sits in his basement at nights going over old footage of himself and writing down all the ways he could improve. Methodical to say the least, Tom Scully has no time for such petty contrivances we mere mortals refer to as "socialising."

Either that or he spends all his time "girl-talking" with Sheeds.

I am of the belief that all the players taken in the draft that year still catch up for dinner once a week. I know that Tapscott is massive on ensuring the newer players are a tight group, and I can't see that Scully wouldn't be included in this. I have as much to back that last comment up with as you do your initial post!

I'd be interested to know how many players Judd socialises with.

Nonsense. He's an introvert.

This is a really good point. Not wanting to read anything into it all but it would be very un-introvert like for him to be on twitter, heading for tea every week and being overally social. Plus he still hangs out with high school mates which does eat into socialising time. Remember Trenners and Tappy are from SA.

Why would you mention his name if you were a melbourne player anyway?

Then you would have halfwits asking every 30 seconds - is he staying or going?

And that's just the herald sun twitter crew - robbo, jay clark, ralphy etc

I heard a rumour that his best mate, Ryan Bastinac is also being courted by GWS.

Interesting that both havent played this year.

Big bucks and a chance to play footy with your best mate, makes sense.

Maybe he's just like me and thinks Twitter is a crock of Sh!t...he should stick to Demonland!

Oh wouldn't he love it in here ;) !!!

And he isn't the only player on the roster that doesn't get Twittered about......

So me thinks this is probably and unfortunately another very long bow

Scully and Blease seem to definately be close mates at the club. Living near Swan street I have seen Sculls and Blease chatting outside the same cafe on several occasions. I've also seen Sculls catching up with some bloke at 'Gloria Jeans' cafe (seriously, what is the world coming to). I couldn't make out who Scully was talking to...probably sheedy come to think about it.

At training scully is incredibly focussed and doesn't seem too interested in chatting or trying to crack jokes...he knows what he wants and single mindedly goes about achieving it. People keep talking about how loyal Tom is, I reckon he would have a bunch of really close mates and isn't worried about trying to fit in and be socially popular - he just wants to be successful and anyone that wants success will gain his respect. He doesn't strike me as arrogant in the FIGJAM Nathan Buckley mould, but anything less that absolute dedication isn't good enough for Tom. He doesn't drink, he is super serious, thus he might not be hanging with the twitter crowd - but I have no doubt the boys love him lining up on game day and have huge respect for him.

For the conspiracy theorists out there - There is interesting footage from last season in the rooms after a game (can't remember which round - one of our few wins for the year). As the boys are coming down into the rooms to sing the song, Brent Moloney is whooping and hollering right next to Scully, who looks completely disinterested in that sort of behaviour. They sing the song next to each other and after the song Moloney actually grabs Scully on the chest in a celebratory fashion, but he's also trying to get some emotion out of Scully, to which Scully responds with a shake of the hand. To me it looks like Scully just doesn't like that type of carry on, it's always the bigger picture with Tom. It struck me as strange at the time, read into it what you will.

We can make up as many conspiracy theories as we like, but we have no idea what's really going on. I bloody hope he stays - he is going to be the next Dane Swan/Joel Selwood.

What I read into that: Scully is focused on a higher level of success than a bloke like Beamer.

One win, even a really good win, is nothing to get too excited about.

The ultimate success is the goal, and even then, the focus would move onto the next flag.

Not that Beamer doesn't desire a higher level of success, just that it has been a long time for him without much success other than a big win.

Same as for Rivers, Green, Davey, etc.

I wonder if this has made them slip into a mindset that is slightly different to that of a bloke like Scully, where a single win means more than maybe it should.

Anyone heard the story that on mad Monday Scully was at a pub and walked passed some smokers. He caught a bit of passive smoke so immediately went home and went for a 5km run to punish himself for copping second hand smoke. Not sure if its true or not. If it is it's a fanatical commitment to being the best, which is either very good or crazy.

Funny you bring this up because I was listening to mmm on friday night and they had Jack Grimes in the box and Garry actually asked him about this. He said to Jack about rumours going around that Tom doesnt sit with the other injured players and instead sits on his own. Garry said to Jack please tell me that isnt true.

Jack said its rubbish because they sat together at the nth game and the saints game. I guess these stories will go around until Tom makes an announcement on what he is doing.

Honestly I went to an all girls high school and the rumour mongering wasn't this painful.....

And we were experts  !!!

Not sure how much there is to this either, and not sure how much I care to be honest, but t has got me thinking. Whilst there is most likely nothing to the twitter theory, I have noticed a definite reduction in twitter mentions of him. During preseason there were constant mentions from Jonesy about training hard with "my boy Sculldog" etc, etc. However, since the whole Eddie on the radion incident, they have been virtually nonexistent. It might be a case of bored, worried supporters conjuring fanciful notions, but for those of us who follow the boys on twitter, there's really no denying that the mentions have dried up. The question is whether it means anything. I prefer to believe it means nothing, and sure hope so as it would be incredibly childish.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
