Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

It is unfair on everyone associated with the MFC if nepotism plays any role in our recruiting decisions (coaches, players and supporters). If Jack Viney is nominated and we consider there to be better talent available at our pick we should let him walk. This means we should only use pick 3 on Viney if he is considered to be in the top 2 of our rankings.

Our best strategy would be to state this as our policy prior to 5 October 2012. We should also have Viney say in the media that he would be happy to play his first two years in the AFL anywhere, but then he intends to make his way back to Victoria. And that he would have no issues with not compensating the club which drafts him.

This is the plan if I was Melbourne, if GC or GWS nominate for Viney, we take him with pick 3 and then we go all Eddie MCGuire and camp out the front of the clubs in question and poach all the young talent they have!

In the article there is no quote about the suns even thinking about taking Viney. There is speculation and that is it. I wouldn't be shocked to see a G.W.S contemplate Viney article soon as well. This is an article for the sake of one, nothing more.

or an article about the growing media specualtion that teh Suns might this, or might that.

Maybe GC wake up and check the papers to see what theyre doing just like Mark does

And that he would have no issues with not compensating the club which drafts him.

May I just ask how you could see that panning out. The only way he could then get to the club of his choice is effectively through trade. If he walked into the PSD( or draft ) he would be snapped up by the first taker. GC would know he only wants to go to Melbourne and in their deservedly so [censored] off state would hold us to ransom...again.

He either comes to Melbourne or he doesnt. Id prefer he does. Its hardly paying overs to have to use 3 if we had to. its not like this is the only gun recruit we are about to bring to the club.

Oct 8 will reveal all

Scully? Ball?

It is, but in the clubs' favour. If we take Viney at overs we will be the first club to be disadvantaged by the F/S rule.

GWS wont want GC to bid as then we wont bid on mini draft and bulldogs will hold GWS to random on mini draft. Best pick they could get is #6 if a Viney bid is made.

GC should also be hesitant to bid due to Tippet for #2 scenario or Caddy for #13 scenario.

Scully? Ball?

Scully could be signed ( arguably illegally timewise ) as part of the GWS concessions setup that the AFL handed it. Forget for the money, about the scullduggery and lying etc.. the mechanism was there.

Ball.. was a gambit. An established player who had also had a mechanism to go to his desired club. We sort of bailed on it but in real terms he had it worked out.Well done him.

Viney would be just a player up for trade ( in your sscenario ) The only way to possibly protect a path through PSD is to put a ridiculous price on his head ...and then we pay overs ..Brilliant. In the mnean time we havent had him playing for us.

Thats what I dont get in all of this..We DO want him playing at Melbourne dont we ?

It is, but in the clubs' favour. If we take Viney at overs we will be the first club to be disadvantaged by the F/S rule.

That might be the case...its brave new world.. Someone is always first.. Thats life.

is Viney at 3 really that much over ?

This chest beating by other clubs reminds me of the chest beating we did around Ball. I remember before the draft us saying "we don't care if Ball wants to go to Collingwood only ,we will look seriously taking him before Collingwoods pick". and we ...... passed.

I dont believe GWS or GC would risk us backing away from Viney by making us bid up to no 3 if they are not going to be happy with getting Viney at no 1 or 2.

It seems to me that some Melbourne supporters have kind of slipped into a welfare mentality where we think we haven't been afforded enough by the system. We want it all but don't want to have to pay for it.

We have been massively overcompensated for Scully, something which we all acknowledge. We've had priority picks and bail outs by the AFL but it's still not enough. Obviously we all hope we can snag young Jack in the second round, but suggestions that we should not take the bloke simply because we have to pay about what his worth is just indicative of the handout mentality we have fallen into.

If you'd told me at the start of the year thy we were going to have the picks we have now I would have laughed at you. Even after all of our failed recruiting and our questionable culture we have an opportunity to capitalise on ANOTHER draft.

We have the opportunity to draft a heart and soul player. The son of a Demon great. We know better than anyone that there are no guarantees come draft time. Viney is the surest thing we've had come our way in a decade and the idea that some people want a bargain more than they want this animal on our side is unfathomable.

Pay up people, I'm going to love watching this bloke play footy and I reckon you are too. Especially alongside his fellow draftees who are bought in under a new regime destined to take this side away from the dark place where we have resided for far too long.

The worst case scenario is that GC nominate for Viney, and I believe they will. We should be preparing our drafting strategies on it happening. If he's a top 5 draft pick I don't have a problem with him coming at 3 when we have another pick at 4.

I've spoken to a recruiting person and he's said that he is like a shorter version of Joel Selwood. I'm happy to give up pick 3 if that turns out correct.

Melbourne has the whip hand here. GWS and/or GC have to play their hand first and we get the opportunity to respond. If the motivation to nominate Viney is preventing us taking him min the second round as opposed to really wanting him with such a high pick then it is simply too big a risk i would have thought - and is one i doubt they''ll take.

If they do nominate him and we rate him say a top 6 player then we get him number 3 and we win or. On the other hand if our assessment is we can a a better player at no 3 then we also win, though I think Viney will be good player so GWS or GC would hardly lose if they end up with him.

High stakes poker, but i like our hand

I don't think having dibs on the hardest player in a generation is being disadvantaged...

We would be looking at the hardest player in the draft with Pick 3 anyway wouldn't we?

Id rather we used 2nd rnd pick for sure.

It will all come down to how all clubs' priorities pan out for them.

its a game of dare if nothing else. Fortune favours the brave....or fools rush in !! lol

Of course I want him to play for us. But we also need to do what is best for the club. No exceptions. We should not pay anything over his worth.

The process of having Todd Viney step in as MFC’s interim recruiter when his son will be drafted is deeply concerning.

The will pick Viney whether it be pick 3 of 2nd round, he will be Neelds new man crush because he is the type of player he is looking for. Gives his all 100% of the time and is rarely beaten.

Sorry if I offend but for any [censored] who thinks he isn't worth pick 3 I propose a question....Name one other draftee out there who has played VFL ts season and in their first game made a 200 game, premiership player from Geelong look 2nd rate, pissing said player off so much he had to be a dog and clean up Viney, breaking his jaw?

2nd question, name another draft hopeful who as a junior had to play the year level above him because we has hurtin kids his own age?

3rd question and the most important. Name me one player currently on the list who shows guts and determination in every game played like Viney has to date and will has a Melbourne demon?

Jack Viney is worth pick 3 as long as I have a hole in my ar$e!

You got it wrong here. Our compensation is pick #4 and pick#13

If other rules cause us to have to us our first rounder pick #3 then we are down 1 pick. So theoretically our compensation for scully will just be pick #13.

Lose pick #1, get pick #13.

Not fair imho

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
