Funny, he says everything yet nothing. What a joke bit of inflammatory journalism. Not that I'm going to come out and defend DB, but that is one of the worst-written articles I have seen in a long time.

I'm confused how all these media types can keep a straight face while saying:

"Bailey is under a heap of pressure and the team is not performing blah blah blah... But they have extensive injuries with large portion of their best players out."

They openly admit to being well aware of the extenuating circumstances that would make it tough for ANY coach, after spending the majority of their time trying to apply as much undue pressure as humanly possible.

It's a pissweak little disclaimer.

Dermot Brereton actually commended Bailey for coaching well against the saints, on the Sunday footy show.

He mentioned how we restricted the saints accomplished ball-users like Goddard and Dal Santo to getting the footy mainly deep in the backline, rather than through the centre.

We forced them to use guys like Brett Peake to kick it through that area, leading to very sloppy ball use.

Much like other teams would try to put the ball in the hands of Bartram or Newton.

I'm no Bailey apologist, and if his time is up come seasons end then so be it, but this article is crud of the highest order!

Tell the football world something it doesn't know! Bailey along with a heap of other coaches are going to be under the pump to keep their jobs this year if their teams don't fire.

It's an opinion piece, not too imaginative and based on actual events. I have seen a lot worse.

There is no doubt that Bailey is under pressure, and there is the intervention of Stynes in the Footy Dept which ceratinly adds merit to the claim.

Mind you the Hun should have a field day on Rodney Eade after their 20 goal loss in Perth.

I love it when posters started screaming "We are softest side in the AFL" and then this result comes in. I am sure they will ignore it. But FMD, WB are somewhere between a sedated small poodle and a timid chihuahua. Eade should be attracting the media interest now for a while.

Heard Jimmy on the radio the other day saying this was a dreadful term to use. I tend to agree, he may well be out of a job, but I sure his family would feel sick to the core every time they saw this expression.

I was wondering when any focus would return to Bailey. I genuinely feel sorry for the man...as a man. Hes really on a hiding to nothing right now. Id hate to be in his position. But a lot of it must also be of his own doing. The Ralph peice aside, for it really only skirts the things we already know, the one singular question that holsters all others is still the one without an answer. Can he coach ? No one knows. I find that amazing really. There is one line that Jon writes that in reality is Dean's damning. " Tactically, Bailey has been trumped by his rival senior coaches" Unfortunately I tend to agree and when all things are said and done we cant afford to have a Coach who 'll be consistently outsmarted. For that is just plain dumb.

Deans cause isnt helped by the fact that his most senior players are letting him down left right and center but at this I also wonder whther he is at all instrumental. is there some sort of revolt, or is it a malaise thats hes allowed to build ?

Short of a miracle he has to be a dead coach walking. Unless there are upteen Lazarus's lurking in the lockers I see it as a long shot that this team can get itself off the canvas and give any respect to the colours. Bailey's been cruelled by injuries (possiblyunfairly ) and this limits his options.

But this will be his Trafalgar, his Waterloo.... his bunker Hill. It will be the HOW in terms of what he does not so much the WHETHER he wins, that wil count toward some explanation of the original question. i.e Can he actually Coach ?

I still wonder about the constituent enquiries iin all of this as well.:

Why cant Melbourne run out week in week out with a positive attititde ?

Why cant we string 4 qtrs of decent footy together ....ever ?

Why do we seem mentally soft ?

Why arent basic football skills invoked from the outset.?

Why are we seemingly going backwards ?

Why does it require a game , any game to seemingly need to be our "line in the sand " before we give a sh!t ?

Why do glimpses appear of a 'real footy team" only to sdisappear as quiclyr as they materialised ?

Show us..its all in your court. I dont expect to win every game but I want to see if you can take what littel is left and orchestrate a rout or two. To see if you can outfox an opposing coach here and there . You need to show us that you really have some Footy Smarts.

I hope you can and that you do. ALl we at Melbourne want in terms of a coach is someone who can. it can be you as much as the next man. But if you cant...there will definitley be a NEXT man !!

My thought gut tells me Rocket is in more trouble then Bailey, a top 4 side last year to being humiliated to the tune of 123 points by last years spooners is worse than what we're dishing up at the moment.

As gutted as I was about the loss on the weekend, at least I saw a bit of fight, in the end I just don't think we had the quality out there to get the job done, and since we're talking coaching I think Baily actually coached better than Lyon.

Was flicking through NBA's Fifty Greatest Players book the other day and found this quote by Elgin Baylor, for those who dont give a rats about Bball he was a super player, even though he was 6 foot 5 inches he averaged 13.5 rebounds over his career to go with 27.4 points per game and 4.3 assist. Thought the following quote was rather pertinent given where we are at as a club and the recent performances of our players...well here goes

"We give players everything to help them be successful today. They have trainers, conditioning coaches, sports medicine specialists. We provide everything except heart, desire and competitiveness. That you cant give a player".

It said that 75 games in as coach, we still don't know if Bailey can coach, and in Ralph's view, Bailey had better prove it or he will likely be gone.

Well, that's partially true. But we haven't seen any desperation, change of tactics to account for the lost players, etc... The improvements haven't been as great as they might have been.

So in a sense, Bailey may well be unlucky, but you do make your own luck in this game.

This is it in a nutshell.. He needs to show he can manufacture something.. It may notbe wins..etc.. but he needs to conjure somethng to indicate he has ability. So far its just a show worthy of the most baffling enigmas.

This is true. There was enough evidence mounting prior to the injury disasters to prevent his reappointment. Without eulogising I will say that any future success that the club may have in the future will be largely because of the hits he was willing to take for the club's plan over the last few seasons.
