Almost choked on my cornflakes when I read the very last line of this article.

Obviously they are just trying to provoke a reaction, but it's he paper saying this rather than attention-grabbing Sheedy.

I think it's all talk, but still, the word is being put out there.

And I find it hard to believe the players would be making calls like this.

Surely they put it in the hands of their managers?

Anyway, personally I can't see it happening.

The way we have drafted the last few years, half the team is made up of his mates from the junior level.

But still, I felt a burst of MFCSS when I read it.

I was wondering when his name would be linked with GWS. For the love of god, I hope the kid extends his contract with us. He is meant to be extremely close with his family so hopefully staying in Melbourne is more important than an extra $100,000+

This is why the Team needs to have a good Solid year in 2011. We are no longer under the Radar, and guys like Tom Scully have to want to stay at this club because it's the best club for him to be at.

Don't forget if it aint the Gold Coast or GWS it will be Free Agency.

It all starts in earnest in 2011 IMO.

I would be tempted to extend his contract from this year and use some of Cam cash on Scully.

Get used to about half our list being spoken about by any club with cash, room on their list and desperation. This is what happens when your list improves. The sharks come-a-hunting.

The trick is to try and make sure you get rid of your Headlands, Rawlings, Prismalls and Hays before the real quality.

It's times like these that remind me why you always go for best available. If you have a surplus in one area, you offload the lesser of the players, get a pick/need from another club, and you only get stronger through trades.

I think the carrot of GWS won't be as appealing to players as that of the Gold Coast. Both offering big bucks but to go to GWS will be career suicide as it is an experiment that will be a basket case for quite a few years as opposed to the Gold Coast which can mould a culture and attract supporters fairly quickly

The impression I get is that from the outset the present administration has been working diligently at building a strong bond to the Club and comraderie within the playing group. We all know that 'money talks', but I'm confident that we will be able to keep our core group together. The key signings we have made this year (eg. Frawley, Petterd, Trengove)despite GC Suns snooping around, indicate to me that the boys want to play for Melbourne, and be part of our future together.

You mean it has not been earnest prior to this?? Who would have thought?

Thanks for this.

Exactly.

And its column filling stuff for the papers nore often without a scintilla of substance.

We will continue to see articles like this until Tom signs a new contract.

As I understand it WYL, and I may have it wrong, but free-agency will only be available (if ever it comes in) to those players who have been at a club for a certain no. of years (don't recall the no. but at least 7).

So young players like Scully wouldn't be eligible for FA. They could still of course not renew their contracts at contract end and try to organise a trade with the club or take their chances in a Draft, but this is not FA.

The problem is they will have the means to throw far more than 100 grand at him. What's more that bitter old coot Sheedy would love to put one over us.

It would be a massive boost if the club announces Scully's re-signing for another 2 or 3 years just as the new season gets underway.

i don't wat scully to go or melb to pay him more than he's worth...but what did the cats get for ablett? we would get the same for scully...since he's younger and was a first round pick.

Not keeping Scully is not worth a moment's consideration. He's going to be a champion. I'm sure our FD are well on the case.

I'm not too worried

It doesn't make a lot of sense for GWS to pay above the odds for a 20YO whose best football will be when he is 24-25 when GWS salary cap has been reduced and they have a sh**load of high priced players. They can get plenty of young elite players from the drafts at bargain prices. I would expect they would use their war chest on more experienced older players with a proven level of performance who are less likely to shoot thru in 3-4 years time.

MFC is likely to offer Scully a good price and 3 years and can afford to front load any contract as they don't have a lot of high paid veterans.

Scully's mananagement would know that if he stayed at MFC for another 3 years that he would be a better marketable proposition at 23/24 than if he overpriced himself at GWS and played with a basket case of a club

So forget the MFCSS, Scully will re-sign with MFC. It just makes sense (Oh, and its also the vibe of the thing)

I agree with you DC.

I don't know whether it's the vibe of the thing or my growing arrogance as a Melbourne supporter but GWS can go after Scully as much as they want.

He ain't gonna leave.

I don't fear any of our Flag Core will go to GWS.

Yes you are right DC, i think it is 7-8 years service. My point was not so much Scully as such, but that each clubs list will be more open to all

I would be very suprised if free agency does not come in. The players want it.

It's coming in.

2012 I believe. To be reviewed after 2015/6.

There is a thread on this I'm sure of it.

Personally, I would be more concerned about the Tigers. Or the possibility the GWS could doing a deal with the Tigers. Sheedy has already come out and said something along the lines of "we will actively assist clubs get what they want, if they help us get what we want"

However, question for me is will have the Tigers have the room in their salary cap to get the job done?

Dont forget the Tigers already have a "top 20" draft pick in the bank for this very type of scenario! Rumours, already are strong that Scully is their target.

You'd be more worried about the Tigers..?

I wouldn't.

And truth be told, I'm not too concerned about GWS either.

Collingwood aren't exactly shaking in their boots after hearing the Giants want to go after Pendlebury & Swan.

Tom would be one of those at the top of GWS' list, but not, in my opinion, a realistic target.

A lot of this is geared towards generating the hype, excitement & fear that any player could be off the Blacktown.

We've seen with GC17 that when it builds up over a season it more often than not becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

GWS are just trying to build on the image that GC17 have put out there.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
