One of my favourites. Seems to go from having a quiet game, to making plays that change the course of the game so often. Love his pace.

A huge find. Runs and runs and runs and is tough too.

Decent disposal. Seems to be a smart player. Runs to the right places.

In fact, doesn't seem to have many weaknesses to be exploited.

Had no idea he would make such an impact after what was a prett lacklustre first season, albeit curbed by injury.

Will never be a star but a very very handy role player.

His emergence was another reason for our improvement in 2010.

Definately a keeper .

Like his size for a mid and the way he goes about it.

A really good find - one of my favourite players too, though I don't really know why. I just like his game.

He has a certain air of reliability about him, doesn't he?

Important part of the side now. His run is unending. Backs up every time. And his kicking is pretty good as well. Definitely 'Best 22' material.

Great pick up from late in the draft.

Could not agree more.

Just proves that there are gems later in the draft.

Not all the gold is in the first twenty.

My view is to judge the recruiting depart by their later picks

I could have worked out to pick Scully and Trengove.

But choosing Bail takes skill!

True.

He's a gem, what a great pickup.

Decent disposal.

I don't know about that. I think he's on a par with Scully. A bit up and under, not really incredible depth... but given his run, it usually doesn't matter too much, and he knows what he's capable of. Doesn't bite off more than he can chew.

That's what I was trying to say. I keep trying to crystallise why he makes me excited, and why I don't fear when he's near the pill. There's no one thing he does incredibly well, he just keeps doing good/great things.

Given his background before he was drafted, and given the fact I had him in front of only Healy in terms of guys I thought wouldn't make it, I reckon he could end up being BPs biggest masterstroke, potentially. Obviously has a looong way to go, but all things being equal, there was no way he should have done what he has.

Yeah, like I said, decent disposal.

Well said indeed. This years Draft should still get the MFC some top players.

Not all of the GC Corporate Raider draft picks will turn to gold.

Yeah, like I said, decent disposal.

You're in that group then? I'm in the "Scully's not a great kick" group. I'm not massively negative. Judd's not a great kick either. And I'd take hard-work+footy-brain+ball-magnet (Judd, Scully) over good kick and nothing else (Strauss so far) any day. Was not meant as a huge insult.

I think that Scully is a better kick than people generally give him credit for.

And 'decent' to me essentially means 'good enough' or 'nothing wrong it, it's just not exceptional'.

Neither Scully or Judd, or Ablett for that matter, are exceptional kicks, but they are definitely all good enough to be very, very effective.

Interesting. I think we're on the same page albeit with different words. I'd like to go into it further, but that would be appropriate for a Scully thread.

Nope, Scully edges Bail. Has more penetration on his kick too.

And yeah Dappa, I think the difference is just semantics.

While I like Bail who has surprised on the upside after some lacklustre Casey performances last year, I am not sure at this point he has nailed a best 22 role. He is in the mix and needs to continue to improve.

As for Scully...he is a decent kick and will get better as he becomes more at home in AFL. He was very good in his first year.

As for Judd... I know he has been a fabulous player over his career and won his 2nd B'low but in the last 6 to 8 weeks of the season, I was underwhelmed with his disposal and kicking ability. I reckon he is still battling "groin problems" and can put no strength on his kicks. He has lost penetration and taps at the ball. He will finish with a great career. I just wonder how long he will last..

I like Scully, he will be a gun but his kicking is a major weakness. Bail has far more penetration in his kicking, Scully still pops anything greater than about 30 metres in the air, even Scully himself would concede this.

loves how this bloke goes about it, hope he plays the majority of 2011 in the red and blue

Bail is a better kick than Scully.

Scully can kick a goal from 50 Bail struggles from 40, I say Scully is a better kick.

only qualm is when he centred it to Ricky P in the dying seconds of QB. Should have handballed to Davey or drilled it himself. That one still hurts.

That's the one I'm talking about. I think the worst miss of the year goes to Watts against freo. Imagine if that had been a final.

Raised one of my eyebrows this season, let's see if he can raise the other eyebrow in 2011.

Unsure on best 22 status, I'll reserve my judgment on him in 2011.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
