As to my earlier post: can somebody explain that if he does decide not to go F/S and GWS pick him up why 1/ they wouldn't keep him, and 2/ why Adelaide will necessarily be able to out bid everyone else on the trade table?

The way I read it is that he decides he wants to go to the Crows. The Crows and GWS do a deal. GWS picks him up and trades him to the Crows. If there's no GWS-Crows deal then he goes F-S and GWS doesn't get him.

I'm not sure that it's really an advantage to go to the club where your dad is a coach.

Let's hope he comes to MFC - his dad was captain and B+F winner - that's a strong link.

we should feel happy that adealide's plans are already stuffed up since they only received a pick after the first round.

That is clearly not going to be enough to secure Jack, who appears like he will be a top 10 draft pick. That means that to secure Viney, Adelaide will have to trade with GWS this late first round pick + another pick/antoher player.

That is a hell of a lot to trade for an unknown 17 y/o.

And i'm 100% sure Jack would prefer to come to Melbourne than live in greater west sydney (who in their right mind would want that?)

what if Neil Craig gets the chop and afc install Todd Viney as senior coach at the end of next season ?

Did he just have a ripper of a game or something? Don't really understand the timing of releasing this article. Jack was all the talk a month and a bit ago with the under 16 national champs but now the focus is on finals... Pretty sure that this will fizzle out and be non-story very quickly

It's linked to the compensation Adelaide have received for Bock.

They say they were going to use that pick as a bargaining chip to get GWS to do their bidding and get them Viney.

Either way, it is a long bow for the Crows to draw so they can further whinge about Bock leaving.

I've got some sympathy that they were ripped off there: Bock - 27yo KPP B+F AA - surely worth band 2 pick after their 1st rounder.

They were ripped off on not getting Gibbs F/S too. I feel for them - but I'm over it now.

Emma Quayle says under the current rules it can't happen, and the Crows are wrong in their interpretation.

This is something I was thinking about.

I think the Crows have a quiet succession plan in place.

This time last year Todd Viney was mentioned as a likely candidate for all of the head coaching vacancies; this year I haven't seen his name mentioned once.

This tells me he probably isn't applying for the jobs, for whatever reason.

Something to think about.

Not at all.

He hasn't been AA for a couple of years now.

He'll be 28 next year. How many KPP play into their 30s? Not many.

His shelf life is limited. The Crows are just trying to get as much as possible for him (as they should).

Port would be doing the same if Krakouer wasn't an embarrassment this year.

Expect a lot more whingeing about compensation to come.

Reply . ie, GWS trades the PICKS, not the players. So they can't select Viney and then trade him to the Crows. Rules should be signed off on soon.

Reply . Also, GWS has 4 draft selections which must be traded in either 2011 or 2012 and used on 17yearolds.

Reply . First, from what I've been told, father son picks either go to their club, or into the draft. They can't be caught up in the GWS concessions

Reply . What are crows thinking telling viney they could get him? They have the rule (which hasnt even been signed off on) wrong. Irresponsible.

If Jack is looking for certainty then he has only one option - Father/Son pick for the MFC. This bid from Adelaide smacks of desperation - I think they may have had a quick look at their list and come to the conclusion that desperate times call for desperate measures. A "Hail Mary' approach to recruitment if you like.

Every other option is open to so many variables - enter the draft and possibly end up anywhere in the country. More than likely one of the GWS priority picks will snap him up. If he is the quality player we are all led to believe him to be, why would GWS entertain the prospect of on-trading him? Doesn't make much sense to me.

If he chooses Adelaide as his club he then has to rely on Adelaide to get the deal done - more than likely with GWS and from where I sit that would be a long-shot at best. If he takes the gamble on Adelaide there is a better than even money chance he will be setting up house in Cabramatta, Lakemba or Punchbowl at the commencement of his life in the AFL. Frankly you wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy.

In all likelihood, sanity will prevail and Jack (providing he is good enough of course!!) will be a long term MFC player - and hopefully an integral part of our next Premiership team.

If he chooses the MFC then he at least has some control over his own destiny which I am sure is far more preferable than the lottery of the AFL draft.

The deal all depends on what goes on in the back ground between Adelaide & GWS. We have no idea what Adelaide is prepared to give up to get Viney. For all we know the two clubs could do an under the table deal for this to happen. This is why the AFL needs to clearly state what the rules are in regards to recruiting 17 year olds instead of making up rules on the run. This should have all been sorted when the two new clubs had been given approval by the AFL to be introduced.

Assuming what EQ has said is correct...

that doesn't quite make sense to me - draft picks that can only be used on 17 year olds?

Are we talking younger than the current eligible draft age? So essentially these are draft picks that must be used during the National Draft, but must be chosen from a different pool that no other teams have access to? (unless they also hold one of these picks?)

Sounds a bizarre setup.

If not, and all other teams are able to pick these 17 year olds, then why do the picks have this special age restriction on them?

Also bizarre.

They seem to be essentially picks in a different under-age draft, where there will only be a few teams involved.

The only limiting issue is that GWS picks their 12 x 17 year olds from this pool beforehand.

wouldn't be surprised if he stayed there considering he has a gf there...

Yes, I am sure his girlfriends wishes inspire every decision he makes.

I'm fairly sure all most 17 year old blokes care about is getting a root, I don't think it matters which state it is in.

He does love his girlfriend but he has only been in SA for 2 years. He still has alot of friends back in melbourne and has come to visit them in melb a few times this year. Also one of Jacks favourite photos is a pic of Todd back in 1999 before he walked through the banner in a game holding his younger brother (in demon gear) with young jack standing next to him in his own demon guernsey. Jack has said himself it is one of his favourite photos. That to me says he will play for the MFC, he can just get the girlfriend to move to melb with him!!

^ What he said

I think the compensation for Bock was spot on. Port got over the odds for Krakouer.

On Viney, there is plenty of time to resolve this issue if indeed Jack Viney is even worth selecting in a couple of years time - plenty can happen. Anyway, unless JV turns out to be a Scully or Trengove standout (which he might) then we will probably get a similarly talented player with a low teens pick anyway. Not too much lost given we would probably have to use our first round pick to select him. The days of selecting a G. Ablett or J. Brown with a pick in the 30s or 40s is past.

^^ Just look at Jack Darling.

I wish the kid all the best in his recovery, but his standing in the draft order must have plummetted after this.

Who knows how he'll recover from a haematoma on the brain.

Jack is born and bred in Melbourne,

I remember when I was younger and I ran into Todd Viney and got his autograph and he was holding Jack lol.

Who would have thought that I was staring at a 4 year old who is probably going to become a superstar.

He better make the right decision and know where his future is at

There's a thing called "relocating". I'm sure they could both move to Melbourne town together...

At the end of the day, that'll have 0 effect on his decision. There are ways to make ends meet.

Lets not forget that Jack goes to the same school Trengove and Tapscott went to and played in a premiership with the two boys in school footy. I am sure they could have a word to him... even so why wouldn't he want to come and play with his old team mates and win a few more premierships!!!!

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
