The Matthew Knights Saga ends with the sack

Sack the coach! Essendon should look at their list and give half them 48hrs notice.

Agreed. If they think the issue is the coach, they have to be kidding. Knights got them into the finals last year ahead of time, and even then it was with 10.5 wins. He was left a terrible list to work with. They are trying to build a spine with kids and Knights also made the hard call on Lloyd, Lucas, Lovett... It is a massive joke if they think sacking Knights is a good idea.

Knights downfall was that he never sold a 'vision' to his members. You don't need a '5- year plan', but you do need some kind of vision that supporters can share and believe in that the club is moving forward to build towards the next premiership.

He completely lost support of the membership base.

Bailey, whether he's a good coach or not, has successfully sold us supporters a vision that we have ralied behind. We can see what he's trying to do and has been transparent the whole way.

Correct. Knowing many Essendon supporters they had no idea what Knights was trying to do not did he ever convey any confidence or belief in what he was doing. Left with a poor list yes but not the right man to lead a club through a difficult time. Whoever resigned him last year should fall on their sword as well though.

C,YA never liked him as a player and now to see him and essendon hit the lows even better.

should have got Hardwick when they had the chance.

Yep, just said on ch.7 - he's gone.

Officially.

What a waste. Still 2 years left on his contract to pay out.

Suck it dons! God i hate essendon! demon_biggrin.gif

Talk about a Knee-jerk reaction. I really thought he'd be safe until the end of next year but obviously they're keen on Chocko or Hird.

Knights didn't do the worst job. Found a couple of guns in Hurley and Pears. Won 5 from 6(?) earlier this year.

With so many big departures at the end of last year, you could see it unraveling for them a bit.

But because I detest the bombers, I really don't care at all. Suck on it Essendon.

Hard to see how the club could have handled this whole situation worse, going back to when they sacked Sheedy. The Board needs to take a good hard look at themselves too. They could cap it off beautifully with a knee-jerk decision on replacement coach.

The Dons board were to busy being worried about the supporter groups and coterie groups getting enough momentum to stage a board spill, worrying about their position on the board rather than backing the guy as a board they gave a contract too and extended that contract. If I was the influential supporter groups/coterie's I'd be staging that board spill faster than ever!

Would love to know what the board had been telling Knights for the past month .

Made a fool of himself telling all repeatedly that he would still be coach next year when the football world new that he was gone .

Here's hoping they spend the 20 years in the wilderness .

How do you know he was given the support to even deliver a vision. The club was divided for a couple of years, prior to Sheedy going, ("should we retire him, No we should keep him"), & remained divided throughout this period.

You watch, there will be changes I'm sure at board level as they change generations.

sheedy should have gone after 2003, but no one had the guts to move him.

No offence to sheeds there, but his time was up.

And now there paying for not going into a rebuild,,, & young Knights is being made the scapegoat.

It's a bloody business,,, & I for one is starting to question & get sick of it.

What is it that Essendon and there board do not understand

"YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CATTLE"

I have no idea if Knights is a good or poor coach!

But Jesus Christ could not do any better with their list!

I'm not sure they don't have the cattle or at least the makings of a good side , like us they are young and inexperienced . I think the problem is the board doesn't know how to handle a born to rule membership that expects to be on top of the ladder 100% of the time . Still hope they spend the next 20 years in the wilderness. Couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch .

What arrogance of the Essendon Football Club. Holding their press conference while another match is still being payed. Apart from compulsory post match coach's press conferences this has to be a 1st. Essendon deserves to be in the situation they are, if they think that is acceptable behaviour.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
