Miller to be delisted

In articles in both the Hun and the Age today Gotch is quoted saying that Miller is to be delisted at years end. I don't have the paper in front of me but he said something along the lines of - 'Brad is not in melbournes plans for next year and hopefully another club will pick him up as he has a lot to offer'. Also said he expects him to get a game in the seniors this week.

You don't "announce" the delisting of a player in the leadership group via the Development/VFL Coach chatting with reporters after a game against Werribee.

This is a really bad look and I hope the playing group don't react as badly as they would be justified in doing. They were already stinging from their captain being pushed, they didn't need to see this days later.

Disagree with this completely, whilst it just never seemed to quite work out with Miller, he was still a popular player around the club, regarded very highly for his leadership qualities off-field. Give him one last hoo-raa I say, it aint gonna destroy our development if one single young kid misses the last game which has virtually no meaning.

Bear in mind that Jurrah hurt his Hammy this week. He may miss the game through injury. If so there is no real loss in Bringing Miller in to replace him. It would be a terrible thing if he didn't get a farewell, and it will be a good one given that Junior is having his last game as well. We can bet on a big showing from the fans.

Really? Of course they would be, but it wouldn't have anything to do with how it was done, more the fact that they wont be playing alongside him next year. Sam Blease even made a similar comment on Twitter about how it was a shame he didn't get to play in the same team as him.

I just hope the kids we have got realise that they have to make the most of their opportunity, because this AFL caper is a bloody tough business. Once Watts, Scully, Trengove and co mature, our Club will not except inconsistencies, and will be ruthless where required. They are in a situation now where they can learn that and to some degree get away with it (or the sake of getting games in to them), but that attitude wont last forever.

I thought it was a strange and unusual comment for a MFC Assistant/ VFL Coach to make. Not the best aveneue of disclosure unless of course Miller has been advised and the player already know.

They're not going to revolt over it, but it would be a mistake to think they have taken it well. In isolation, it wasn't all that bad given the circumstances, but to have two bad things happen in quick succession tends to amplify the impact of both events.

Sorry, although noone is disputing the calibre of man that Miller is, playing him is pointless. Period. He is not going to be around, and whilst its a 'nothing' game the ONLY thing that can actually be gained out of it is experience for the unexperienced. Even if it is only one game- sentiment is weak and not going to help our cause.

Miller had already been advised, and I highly doubt he was keeping the news to himself. But on Brad's behalf, I would imagine the players would not appreciate the news being broken in this fashion.

I understand when he was the last player signed up last year on the list on a one year contract he was quite realistic where he stood.

I am not sure he is keen to leave Victoria though. So all the calls about GC have as much weight as Petterd's move home.

I dont agree. Giving him a farewell game does send a strong message to younger players that players who may not be the most gifted but by the actions and deeds have given great service and ledership. How do you bulid a "winning culture" when you dont respect players who over a considerable period of time have a set a high example in many of the attitudes and efforts to be a great player as part of a great club?

I agree. If we are trying to build a "winning culture", "integrity", "community" and all the other things Cameron Schwab talks about on Whiteboard Wednesday, I'd expect the club to do something positive.

Winning culture? Really?? We're on that 'ol chestnut again? I would argue that 'winning culture' comes from skill and ability + application + experience + determination, not giving out free games in the big leauges, sentiment, or to be seen as doing the ethically right thing.. however whilst Newton was given this oppurtunity (and look how well that turned out) I wouldn't begrudge Miller getting his- even though it won't help our 'winning culture' or future team structure one iota

Even if this has been properly communicated to Brad and the player group, an Assistant/VFL Coach should not drop it to the media during a routine discussion after an VFL game. Miller's career plans - and his standing in the eyes of other clubs - should be respected. Did Brad ask the club to make it public like this? I doubt it............

And wouldnt you think Miller embodies your equation for winning culture above. Got the most out of his skill and ability through application and determination while providing leadership (and experience) to a young side. Its clear the players think so given he is still voted by them to be in the leadership group notwithstanding that this year he only had only a one year contract.

The Club needs to ensure players like Miller are exited from the Club respectfully and positively. Gotch's comments did not fulfill that. Any chance Gotch had been told that with MFC's season finish this Sunday that no MFC player who is not going to be on the list next year will be allowed to play for Casey in the finals? Counts out Miller and Bell for starters..
