Can't find a link just yet, but just heard it on the news - Brent Guerra suspended, 1 week with an early plea.

Should help with Cyril Rioli out too and Taylor looking very underdone (hopefully we should dominate the ruck).

What about Luke Hodge?

what about Hodge? Is he out?

If so, this just gets better and better...

Have not watched much of the Hawks this season. Clearly Guerra is in their best 22, but in all honesty how much is his exclusion going to hurt the hawks? I wouldn't have thought he would be in their top 10, or even top 15 players.

It hands us a slight advantage, but I was not worried about a "Guerra Factor" before he was rubbed out. I am sure the Hawks have the depth to cover him.

Posted

The thing about Guerra is that he's one of the keys to their "unsociable football" engine, and I think that is one of the major reasons why we've been smashed by Hawthorn in the past. So while he's not as important as, say, Lance Franklin, in some ways he is still essential to the way they play.

Posted

Hawthorn have bullied us every time we have played in recent times with the likes of Guerra, Brown and Hodge having big influences against our younger, less experienced and less physical players. Its about time this has changed...

Posted

Guerra often takes the hawks' kickouts from a behind.

I'd say that makes a difference to their side.

It also makes a difference to my enjoyment of the game.

I love to hate him.

Like for like replacement pretty much... I suppose what the main thing that has become apparent with the hawks recent form slump is the oppositions ability to limit hodge's impact. I am thinking that Bruce may go to him as he has been doing a stellar job of recent times. Will frawley or garland go to buddy?? From memory it was garland that held him to 2 goals in his 100+ goal season

Posted

The conundrum here is, do we put Bruce or Junior on Hodge, knowing they'll probably do a decent job, or do we go for the development angle and put Bartram on him, in the biggest challenge of his career? Perhaps McKenzie? Or does Joel McDonald get the job if Hodge plays predominantly out of the back half?

Sucks that Grimsey has missed so much footy with the dreaded Etihad Stadium hammy, because Grimes on Hodge at half-back would have been a beautiful match up, and a great learning experience for Hodge... I mean Grimes :P

Posted

Hard tag of bartram on hodge is not that bad of an idea. However, I fear that this matchup would be played on hodges terms the entire match as he wouldn't worry too much about bartram hurting him the other way... Bruce does thus as he links up with others and sneaks forward and kicks goals on you.

Dunn on Hodge?

nup- dunn is great at full forward. he's tough to match up on. looking forward to having jurrah play against the hawks for the first time as well. I think unfortunately for brad miller our forward line is functioning pretty well at the moment.midfield will be an interesting battle. theyve got a lot of class in hodge, mitchell, burgoyne then they have lewis, ladson and ellis

Bruce on Hodge.

Frawley on Franklin.

Warnock in to play on Roughhead.

Rivers to float and help out inside back 50.

Garland on small forward. Possibly Lewis if he plays forward.

WE JUST NEED TO RUN FRANKLIN INTO THE GROUND PHYSICALLY. A BIG TACKLE OR BUMP! SIMILIAR TO THAT GUERRA PUT ON BRUCE A FEW YEARS AGO. OUR BACKLINE NEEDS TO BE PHYSICALLY INTIMIDATING. AKA MATTY WHELAN.... JOEL MACDONALD COULD BE THIS MAN. NEED TO DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND AND PHYSICALLY INTIMIDATE! ANOTHER STEP FOR OUR BACKLINE.

And that is EXACTLY why the new and improved Frawley must play on the Hawk's most dangerous player/forward. Frawlz has the capacity to run along the wings and up the ground so would be a great match-up on Buddy who also likes to leave Hawthorn's F50. Frawley can easily win the contested ball on the big unit that is Franklin and run off him! Which is all why Chip can run Buddy into the ground. ;) GAME ON!

Dunn is easily is career best form playing a tagging role from a HFF, stopping the influence of some very important opponents recently. You havent noticed noticed all his goals from outside 50 lately??

Dunn has earnt 1st crack on hodge (if he plays his usual half back role, that is) and it seems a perfect match up on recent form.

As much as I hate to say it, every time we come up against the Hawks they seem to have some injuries or question marks over key players, and every time they pull our pants down and produce the belt.

I don't see how a "backs to the wall" Hawks side (needing to win 2 of the last 3 to make finals) is going to be any different. History is made to be repeated, and in the same way that we match up well against the pies, the Hawks match up even better on us. I'm praying (like all of us) but fear our 3 wins on the trot combined with what will be a ferociously hungry Hawthorn outfit spells a Hindenburg like season combustion for us.

I will be there pumped as ever but . . . every now and then that dreadful feeling of impending doom settles over your more fanciful visions of flawless victory. It's the haunting familiarity seeping through your veins that renders you paralysed in a state of pre-emptive deja-vu. What follows is the acceptance of an inevitable disaster that unceremoniously hurtles us back to the comfort of Demonland to dissect what may have been.

This I fear is one such time.

Having said that Dees by 7 points (even against all sense of reason in my body I just can't tip against the boys)

Guerra out = shame !!! lol :):)

Frawley CAN contain Buddy...and will give Franklin another frustratingly quiet day

Bailey may alternate Bruce and Junior but feel Mcd might be tasked with Hodge. Am sure Bailey has figured out the best matchup

Does Warnock get a call up ?? be interesting to see the team sheet later in week

Dunn on Hodge?

Err yeah. Dunn on Hodge. Dunn creamed Deledio who was in AA form before last week. And need I remind you kicked 5 goals of his own. Swans played Ryan O'Keefe on him last week and he stopped him. He is their most important player along with Buddy.

Here's how I see the rest:

Bruce and Sylvia to Mitchell and Burgoyne. Must stop them both. Maybe even Morton runs with Burgoyne.

Bartram to Bateman.

Warnock to Roughead.

Garland to Franklin. Stopped him in 2008 when Garland was fit and Buddy was in his 100 goal Coleman medal year.

Frawley to Lewis??

Rivers to Brown. Has the mongrel in him I reckon after watching him in the rooms boxing last week!

Our rucks need to have a big one and our fwds will be a huge problem for their backs - that is their weakest point. We simply have to create more inside 50 entries and not turn the ball over. Gibson, Ellis, Murphy, Schoenmakers are not yet up to it as a unit.

Frawley to Lewis??

:/ Frawley straight to Buddy. Why waste an All-Australian backman on Lewis??? That's not to demote Lewis by any means... but we have an All-Australian backman here that can gut-run up the ground (as Franklin does), has energy to burn (as Franklin does) and is our toughest backman!

I would like to see Garland help to perhaps double team against Buddy and help intercept.

Wouldn't be surprised if Bruce goes to Lewis. Lewis usually plays forward early in the game before working into the midfield. Seems like a very good matchup for Bruce, who should be able to run off him as well.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
