Garland gets dropped??? You're kidding. And Newton stays instead.

In: Sylvia

Out: Dunn

I am not sure that they will pick Rivers this week. Who's his match up??

To the posters who have Bruce dropped this week - Dream on

Garland isn't quite right yet. I'd be inclined to keep him at Casey next week and maybe the one after. Once he's fully match fit and has some touch back, then bring him back.

Read my mind, though I'd be just as happy with just Sylvia for Dunn.

yeh your rite, dunn only took 10marks,whats the saying, birds of a feather?

I'd give Sculley a couple of weeks at Casey, he's made some very bad mistakes over the last two weeks. He dropped two simple chest marks last week and kicked in to the man on the mark twice today. He also needs to work on his handball and get some distance in it, he is good in close but lacks penetration. These errors need to be eradicated if he is going to fulfill his promise. That turn in to an opponent today was very ordinary.

I think he will be a very good player but these errors and his confidence need a bit of work.

Sylvia in and I'd leave the rest of the team as is, players need to be rewarded when the team puts in a couple of good performances.

are We trying to achieve meaningless wins (eg wins without developement) or trying to get experience into young kids

I'd be trying to play TS as much as we can and rest him when he starts to get tired (which inevitably will happen later in the year)

I don't think it's a good idea to continue to play a young kid that's making elementary mistakes, he needs to learn that AFL is a tough business and you don't get games just because of your reputation.

I don't think Dunn was bad enough to be dropped imo.

Though i didn't pay a particular notice o his game as others may have.

Watts needs a game. Richmond is the worst team in the AFL by miles.

And to the Bennell haters, 121 SuperCoach points speaks for itself. And SuperCoach is way more technical than Dream Team. If it was 121 Dream Team points I wouldn't have bothered with the stat :D

I'm sorry Mr Rivers, you will have to return via the 2's.

Sylvia is the only one who deserves to come straight in.

The only guy who has played 2 bad weeks in a row from the midfield or small/medium sized forwards is.... Tom Scully.

Give him a week or two in the VFL.

We need to construct our Physical structure to suit the coming 3 games against Richmond (A) then Brisbane (H), followed by Kangaroos (A)...

we need a Solid & settled tall defense before we hit Brisbane.

We'll need all of Frawley, Warnock, Garland, & Rivers against Brisbane, IMO. Frawley & Garland giving our defense versatility, tall or small, & with class. Add Cheney to this defense & IMO we have as physically strong & solid a young defense as you'd want. Just add run out of the back, > Grimes + Davey/Bennell

Out - Bate

In - Sylvia

Look while Dunn did make 2 shocking errors in the last quarter, he was a big target off the 50 line, took 10 marks, was handy in the ruck forward and got 20 touches, not to mention a couple of metres off kicking 2 goals.

His kicking was not as on song as it was against the Pies but when he's improving I would not dump him. Let's face it Dunn held onto 10 today while Miller would be lucky to hold onto half of those.

Bate was shocking today and while he kicked 2 receiver goals, he was slow, couldnt kick 20m, kicked into the man on the mark ect.

Bate is not 100% fit and he should go to Casey.

Posted (edited)

Miller? Forget it. There, forgotten.

Bate probably won't be dropped, despite his relative mediocrity, neither will Bruce - actually Bruce improved over the match and though his delivery is shonky, he can play a good defensive role.

Bartram and Dunn made a fair fist of things, although Dunn's decision making and delivery/disposal in the forward area was shocking. But he is mobile and took quite a few marks. I'd keep him.

The only players who should be considered for Sylvia's place if he's fit are the three B's: Bate, Bartram and Bruce.

Newton might be considered for the drop, but his place in the side really depends on who they're going to put in as talls. He shouldn't be dropped for Sylvia. There are two things to address:

1. A tall forward

2. Help for Jamar

but I'm not sure the club will view those as vital for the Tigers match.

I'm not sure Newton is either of those things mentioned above, not a good one, anyway, but if he is to be flicked who would come in? I see only 4 possibilities: Rivers, Martin, Spencer and Watts. Rivers' fitness is not known. And what about Spencer's?

It might be said that Richmond are not a threat, but I think Jamar should be given more support - he seemed more tired today than last week. I don't know if the club will see it that way.

If Spencer comes in as a second ruck, who would be dropped - a small? Hard to think of one that deserves the drop after a win, and he would be replaced by Sylvia if fit.

If Newton is dropped regardless, Spencer would not be a suitable straight swap, if you ask me. Martin and Rivers (the latter is not exactly tall) are both defenders but Rivers could be tried out in attack or Martin could be tried out as back-up ruckman. And Watts? Does anyone know if he is likely to be 'ready' for AFL football? If he's anything near ready, the Tigers might be the right mob to try him out.

Well, I reckon the club might keep an unchanged side after a win, with Newton being the only one considered for replacement by one of the four above. If they drop him and don't bring in a tall they've got rocks in their heads. I'd only bring in Sylvia if he is completely ready.

Edit - I'm wondering about Scully now. He wasn't that good today, or so it seemed to me. Anyone else got a thought on him? I think it would be bad management and damaging to his confidence to drop him from a winning side. He was OK in the first two matches. I'm not sure the wing is his position.

I still think why would you change a winning team? The only in for this week should be sylvia and i think will be

Hear, hear! I don't understand all the carping. Syliva obviously comes back in but I wouldn't drop anyone.

Read my mind, though I'd be just as happy with just Sylvia for Dunn.

You know what they say about great minds... :P

I think realistically that will be the only change, but Newton is giving us little to nothing. Martin can at least compete in the ruck, and is a better mark than Newton IMHO.

Plus we can't expect Jamar to continue to ruck 98% of the game. We'll run him into the ground and onto the injury list.

Posted

I love that this is suddenly a tough decision. Who would've gussed it after Round 1.

Honestly on today's showing I think Bruce should be rested for Syliva. His first half today was horrible and for a senior player he is nowhere near up to scratch.

Juice did just enough to warrant reselection up forward, just, and can provide some assistance in the ruck whereas nothing from Spencer has shown me that he's ready just yet.

I'm keen to see young Tapscott get a run so perhaps he could go on the bench to replace Bartram. Bate needs to be seriously looked at also.

Who makes way for Rivers?

Tapscott is indefinitely a LTI. No chance for next week.

I will probably get flamed for this but Scully out for Sylvia in.

The reason being that while he gets a lot of it he tries to do a bit much sometimes and it might not hurt to give him a run down in the twos.

Posted (edited)

Scully should keep his spot as playing against the club he barracked for might just be the spark that sets him on fire

Really want Watts to get a spot

He is better than Newton in every skill of the game

Sylvia if fit is a given

I would continue to play Scully. If Sylvia was to come in next week I'd make room for him. However, the likes of Bail, McKenzie are gaining valuable game time in the middle and are doing quite well. Whilst they are performing well, keep playing them. So far, they've done well to not risk Sylvia. There really is no need to; given the team remains competitive. If Bailey & Co. had concerns up accross half forward with say Dunn or Newton, etc a move could be made.

It could well be "no change" - unless there is signs of injuries/soreness. (ie. Davey ?)

Posted

After todays perfromance I can't see any changes taking place unless someone got injured. Newton IMO did enough to warrent selection next week. Scully was quiet but shouldn't be dropped. Garland was solid without being outstanding and Bartram played a very good game. If sylvia is fit for next week i'd expect one of the following players mentioned above to be omitted. It'll be a tough call for the selection panel later in the week. Go Dees!

Its not so much just about next week game v Richmond, but also about preparing the structure for the following games. You don't do that on the week you play, but start the structure 2games ahead. Adjust the team selection & style to suit this & the following game, now.

Merged two threads on the same topic ie. Changes for next week...

Agree. Although my previous post suggests that if Sylvia is still some risk, no need to risk. ie. No change.

Bate - bash

Bruce - bash

Newton - bash

a couple of weeks ago there were posters on here suggesting Martin was not even a footballer now everybody wants him back in, in place of Newton, Bate must be slow he did not have the speed to get to those two gimme goals, Bruce is Bruce live with it, he is not going to be dropped

Exactly, Bruce cops a lot of criticism but he is probably the best stopper we have at the moment, even if he does get beaten occasionally.

I would think Dunn would be dropped for Sylvia.

It occurred to me that Bruce is actually following the coaches' directions exactly, but his teammates aren't and that is why his possessions go awry.

BRuce has been criticized for going sideways, but following the match Bailey has stated that after half-time we consciously made an effort to be less "corridor-centric" and go wider.

Bruce did this to a tee, but in doing so, disrupted what the rest of his teammates were trying to do on a few occasions.

Would have liked to have snuck Strauss back in also, but noone else really deserved to be dropped.

Bruce broke even in my view - Provided some good run and linked up well at times, also stalled movement forward by going wide instead of kicking aimlessly to Adelaide numbers. That said, he was still guilty of poor decisions and disposal - Best game I have seen from him for a while... Controversial?

Based on todays effort, Rivers and Martin are going to find it hard to regain their respective spots.

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
