Brent Guerra should be ashamed of himself for the unsportsman-like way he tackles. Look at Jordie McKenzie. He's a guy who tackles really well - just as effectively, but he doesn't kill people doing it.

Don't like to admit this, but there are two players who I would not feel sorry for if they were taken out in a game, Guerra and Fletcher. I think that the Hawks are the thugs of the AFL, but that is no surprize when you look at their coach, just ask former blue, Ian Aitken.

It really pisses me off!! Arm barrs belong in MMA not AFL.. submissions/pressure points.. all the same to me! Guerra should be getting weeks like Judd did because this way of tackling is callous- its main purpose is causing physical damage to the person being tackled and nothing else. It is thuggery in it's purest form and needs to be looked at with the same scrutiny that head high tackles are.

These players are cunning, make no mistake. They are fully aware of the chances of popping a shoulder/joint out of place with these kind of tackles- that suggests premeditation. Just makes me sick~

Hawthorn are a pack of thugs and the AFL are fully aware of it. Nothing gave me more satisfaction than watching that sniper Osbourne, yet again try and take a player down behind the play and cop one in the aggotts for his efforts. Scarlett should be rewarded, not reprimanded.

If the AFL truely want to stamp it out 6 weeks would probably do it. But a conservative approach is whats likely to occur- I see the words 'chicken wing' and 'inquiry into rough conduct' popping up over the course of the next week, with little being done to actually stop it from happening. And it should be outlawed post-haste.. it's not a matter of 'if', but rather 'when' a player suffers a serious dislocation (think Harvey) will this issue be looked at as something more serious, rather than just a technique defficiency which needs ironing out.

The thing about twisting someones hand at angles it's not meant to be at whilst simultaneously pushing down directly on someones elbow or shoulder is that it's a technique designed to capacitate by extreme pain and complete disregard to possible injury. A technique used by cage fighters and officers of the law. Not Joe Shmo in a sport. This 'chicken wing tackle' tag doesn't do the manouvre justice, should be called the 'attempted greivace bodily harm' tackle!

Hawthorn's mongrel tactics were discussed this morning by KB on SEN with Patrick Smith. PS wanted to discuss Guerra's tackle but KB seemed not to but they did confirm that Alistair Clarkson likes his team to play this way. They also mentioned Mitchell's tackle and that Brown should focus more on the ball than the man. I think (cant confirm) they both referred to Hawthorn as the "thug" (or something similar)team of the competition. Nice

I think we should "chicken wing" Demetriou, send the message home that these sorts of tackles have nothing whatsoever poultry related. Do you think if we chicken wing someones arm straight out of their socket they will realise it's a dangerous manouvre and not just one designed to gain a holding decision against? Who must we chicken wing, the match review panel? Throw in a rear naked choke while we're there just to drill the message home?

Agree. If you look at the vision, you will see that the ball was 10 metres behind Steve when he was slung into the ground, with his arms pinned and hitting his head on the ground. Cameron Bruce will know all about this as Guerra did the same to him in round four when Bruce had 9 Brownlow votes in the first three games. Dislocated collarbone and end of season and never played as well again. How are you allowed to drive a bloke into the ground when he doesn't even have the ball. Guerra is a thug and I hope he gets his one day.

Yeah, but it's hard to break someone's leg with any kind of tackle. It's much easier to hurt their shoulder, which "Gorilla" Guerra has done before on a number of occasions. Besides, do you think Nathan Brown blames Matthew Whelan for breaking his leg. Accidents happen. But they happen more often if you're reckless - and Brent Guerra is reckless in his tackles.

It still is tough. Just not "boxing match" tough. More like "marathon while being attacked by ninjas" tough. And no I wouldn't. I worship McKenzie as much for the way he tackles as the frequency of his tackles. He knows what a tackle's purpose is: to dispossess someone of the ball. It is not to injure them.

Not only does this type of tackling raise the likelihood of shoulder injury but also means the head can be rammed into the ground giving the tackled player no chance of protecting themselves. The 'duty of care' rules should come into play here as the intention is to injure the player. Guerra may be a very nice person (I can't judge him as I don't know him), but on the field, he is and always has been, a grubby mongrel.

what really annoyed me about this passage of play was after stevie j had handballed off after getting the free kick, and a hawthorn player came barging into him as he was signalling to the bench.

legally he was within 5 m of the ball, but as the geelong player had the ball at the time its not like the hawks player was laying a shepherd, and also had no intention of chasing to get the ball. he just ran straight into stevie j and knocked him over.

as far as i am concerned that should be charging. stevie j didnt shepherd, he just got run into. it was also a filth act.

As good a player as Stevie J is, I'm sure he was looking over his shoulder the rest of the game after that tackle.

It was crude, cheap and could have left him with a Cam Bruce like injury.

But my god I would love it if a few of the Melbourne boys would dish it out the way Hawthorn do.

Realistically we are not going to win the flag or play finals this year.

So at the very least would love to see em rough up a few of the sides that are a chance.
